  1. and all this bull****, the reason we are talking about him today, is because of a hollywood strike in the mid 2000's and Mark Burnett pitching an idea to fill the gap in the TV lineups for a show involving Trump who at that point was a washed up real estate tycoon that was yesterday's news. He was as relevant as Jim Bakker or Max Headroom, some forgotten guy from the 80's who had his moment in the tabloids but was considered a joke at that point.

  2. Oh stop it. Drafts distribute incoming amateur talent in a most rational manner, and have been doing so successfully in most sports for many years. Lotteries, in any sport, have done absolutely nothing to affect or change team behavior even one iota, and only serve to dilute the true function of a draft. Lotteries address a perception, not a reality.

  3. I agree with this in principle, although I might also counter that the whole idea behind the whataboutism that we see on this topic—and I don't mean just here—is to make them both look like they are at an awfulness level of 100, both equally bad, and both equally deserving of categorical dismissiveness. Regardless of the opinions being offered on MSNBC or how they are delivered, the network still has the journalistic rigor of NBC News behind them, which automatically makes them light years ahead of FOX, and regardless of the prevailing narrative about the mainstream media, that counts for a lot.

  5. well when someone's evidence of bad bias is "they talk about the blacks too much".... what is one to do?

  6. Everyone has some form of bias, it's how you use that bias that's important. You can show harmless bias simply by deciding what stories or topics to cover. For example, the local Fox 2 channel does this at noon every day when they have two African American anchors, Maurielle Lue and Lee Thomas, sit and talk. I've noticed their topics are of particular interest to that community. It's fine. They aren't pushing an agenda, just diverting coverage to a more targeted demographic. Probably because the show that comes on after is Sherri which is African American focused. The bias gets harmful when you have people on, like Fox does, who blatantly lie or mislead. Fox News does this when they bring on Jonathan Turley, under the guise of straight legal analysis, who completely distorts the facts. Bias isn't a bad word in and of itself. It's how you use it. A network could be biased simply because they talk about the Royal family too much and some viewers may not watch it. A local sports network like Bally's Detroit is biased, without being agenda driven or hurtful, because they will obviously frame things around Detroit teams and players for a Detroit audience. Nobody's lying or distorting the facts. That same broadcaster could then work the weekend for a national outlet covering a Detroit team and they flip a switch and cover it straight.

  7. I think the problem is that in normal discussion, degrees of awfulness is not apparent. So if I think Fox is at a level 100, doesn't mean other media outlets can't be biased and be promoting an agenda, even if their level of awfulness is only a 50. Doesn't make them equivalent, but it also doesn't absolve the less awful outlet from any criticism, and we shouldn't attack a poster for having such an opinion. IMO

  8. Saw Arctic Monkeys and Fontaines D.C. last night at Pine Knob. Packed house. I was just as into Fontaines as Monkeys, but today I am hurting. I mean, I am in SERIOUS pain today. All I did was go to a concert. There was no drinking. There was no wildness. **** aging..........

  10. I think there is also a difference between having a left and right handed player at a couple of positions who pretty much always play the same position when they play, (as did the 84 Tigers), and constantly moving multiple guys to a variety of different defensive positions where you never end up with a defensive team that is collectively sharp playing together. I don't see that as any kind of virtue at all and I don't believe for a minute that the tiny offensive mix/match gained (since you are talking mostly about players that are not very offensively productive under *any* circumstance anyway) is worth the general deterioration of defensive run prevention it creates.

  14. Lot of kids coming up next year I think... I expect Malloy, Keith, Eddys Leonard and Wenceel to make their MLB debuts. Parker already has. And there are other guys with shots to break into MLB next year as well (IMO): Jung may have an outside shot, Lipcius maybe, Dingler? It'll be interesting to see what these guys turn into. At this point, nobody knows... but we'll find out soon. It actually looks like more attention will need to be spent on the pitching staff than on offense... crazy, given how this year has gone. I expect all these kids, even though they are kids and just breaking into MLB... to give us a decent enough offense to contend. If we lose Eduardo though... Who can we depend on to start next year and lead the staff? Skubal? Turnbull? Mize? Manning? Just too many question marks here. It's why I would NOT be bothered at all to buy out Eduardo's opt-out option. He wanted + 1 more year at $20 mill at the trade deadline to do that? Hell yes, I say. Do it. And then we could still use another Lorenzen-type vet for stability and innings IMO. What say you?

  20. One of the reasons they don't suck as bad... FOX's news side has a few good people mixed in, but that number has thinned out over the years. And, not surprisingly (see the 2020 election, Arizona call specifically), that thinning out was in part due to political pressure from people associated with the GOP. (ie. FOX's de facto bosses) You add that to the defamation suits, and it paints a really clear picture of how one outlet is orders of magnitude more ****ty. And it doesn't make one "love" MSNBC to be up front about the differences.

  21. You haven't told me the agenda other than talking about black people too much. What is it about them and black people that riles you up? What news stories or segments were wrong in your opinion? I provided you with an opinion that bias by itself isn't bad. It's not a legal or moral distinction. It's marketing.

  22. It’s call the free market and it had been that way since the 8os. Cable never fell under the late Fairness Doctrine. News has become less of a profit center for media companies in the past. Heck, even the days when your local blowtorch radio station that was counted on to give you a balanced view of the world has been taken over by corporate overlords pushing the viewpoint that will give them the best ROI. Screw any semblance of locality in many markets Comparing viewing preferences is like deciding to root for the Yankees or the Tigers and we all have our reasons to do so. It’s a fact of life and has been for 30 plus years

  25. I recently read something about all of Trump's golf club championships. 1) He plays the inaugural round on all his courses, so he gets to claim the lowest score. 2) With the Club's championship tournaments, he usually doesn't play the first day. He'll take a good score from a recent round and claim that as his first day score. They say he's a decent golfer. He only cares about the distance of his drive off the tee, the rest is unimportant. Much like his approach to business and government. But I think we've realized that already. Just rehashing old grievances

  26. It's not so much a new thing though. The idea that all teams used to have 8 starters starting evey game is also a myth. There were more regulars 40-50 years ago, but injuries and platooning were common back then as well. I still think teams should TRY to have as many regulars as possible, but be prepared for injuries and be effective with platoons. I don't think it's necessary or beneficial to have a different line-up every day with players playing different positions all the time.

  27. Yeah, noted. One important part of the appeal of Trump is the demographic of guys who cheat their business partners in local regional businesses and then brag about it on the golf course (probably while cheating in the game). That anyone would call out such behavior is the nail that must be hammered down.

  29. The results don't matter this late in a lost season. I would like to see the 'core 3' get back on track soon. And I'd like to see Manning and Skubal have some good outings. Aside from Meadows, I'm not really sure that any of the other guys are potential long term pieces. Get to the end of the year and try to improve the team.

  36. I’ll be making the trip for this one, I’m excited to see Arrowhead. I expect a very competitive game that is a little sloppy by both teams and could go either way. I don’t expect to see vintage Mahomes (outside maybe a flash or two), and I expect Goff’s streak of zero interceptions to end. I think the offensive line will make even the casual observer say “wow” a few times. We haven’t ever seen this unit as healthy as they are now, because Big V got hurt in the preseason last year. As good as they were last year, the could legitimately be better this year, and Gibbs could make a big splash in his debut as a result. On the defensive side, I’m a little worried for our linebacking corps. I think the Mahomes —> Kelce connection may pick on Anzalone and Campbell and require some safety and nickel help. It’s a tall task to limit Kelce. Given the way CJGJ chirps and the way Kelce has been a hot head in camp, maybe we put those two together and see what comes of it. The biggest question is ultimately going to be cohesion. I’m not super worried about the offense, we are retaining the OC, OL, QB, and WR1. But on the defense, we could be looking at 6 or 7 new faces starting. We will get to see how effective camp was at establishing leadership and getting everyone on the same page. We won’t be able to afford stupid mistakes and holes in coverage.

  38. We dropped our oldest off at college for freshman year a couple of weeks ago. A stressful and emotional moment for sure. You just want them to be happy, and for them to develop a good social circle in a new environment. Well, he's doing great! He called his sister the other day and even she said afterwards "he sounds so happy!". We are so glad that he's plugged in well to campus and with his roommates/others. We still miss him like crazy, but it has helped tremendously to know that he is having a good experience. (And yes he's going to class too. He's a pretty conscientious student.)
