  1. Ha - forget Chavez/Maduro. The truth has always, and probably will always be that in once you find yourself in a war, the imperative is to save the lives of your own people. Despite the all the analysis since, the logic of 1945 for the US was correct, even if the total casualties including Japanese were higher (which is very debatable) the bombs saved *American* lives and that is the only calculus that can matter to the people making the decision. The same holds true for Israel. By the normal definition - the 'good guy' will try to minimize civilian casualties, but in the end not to the detriment of the strategic imperatives.

  3. stupid Rangers spent all that cash in 2021 to go from 60 to 68 wins, and for what? besides a World Series title, what did it get them? they would have been better off finishing third and further assessing the situation.

  6. I was about to push back on your "Maybe next time, don't vote for Hamas" comment '84, but you're subsequent comments give more context and unfortunately, I think you're correct. Yesterday I saw a comment about Israel having a blank check and I disagree with that, but I do agree that a "proportional" attack is going to be a lot different here than it might be elsewhere based on how Hamas wants to use Palestinians as pawns. I haven't heard follow up, but it was reported that Israel killed 4-5 hundred folks just to hit one major Hamas leader yesterday. Didn't that original hospital bombing which turned out to be friendly fire originally to be said hundreds of people and it turned out to be just a handful? Any number of innocent deaths is horrible, but also 1) I don't trust any numbers I hear coming from Hamas and 2) everything you stated is the reason why there will be higher casualties.

  7. And Hitlerism/ Nazism/ Fascism/ Trumpism were all plagues that needed to be defeated. I believe the Theo-Fascist Dictatorship in Iran also needs to be defeated. I believe the Palestinians deserve a state of their own, dignity, and a chance to lead normal lives. But Hamas is a terrorist organization hell-bent on murder. They also need to be defeated. At a high cost, based on their methodology (embedding themselves within Gazan civilians and civilian infrastructure in order to create maximum Gazan casualties to "paintbrush" the Israelis as "bad guys"). But they must be defeated nonetheless. Even at a high cost. And I am not advocating the high cost. I am stating that it is unavoidable. Based on Hamas' philosophy.

  13. Why is the distinction important? If a racist claims he only hates black people because they have a higher crime rate, not because of his inherent blackness, no one would claim that it's a valid or important distinction. Anti semites always are looking for ways to sanitize their hate, they love these nuanced takes on why they hate, just like racists do and we would never take that from them.

  15. Yeah, there's a fine line between enjoying the moment (and god knows that us long time Lions fans have earned it) and raising the bar as well. I think there's a lot of merit to what you're saying about taking the time to enjoy this but there's also merit to what Tater is saying by raising expectations and expecting more when needed. The window is just opening BUT in the salary cap NFL where there is so much roster turnover from year to year, you just don't know when you'll have a real opportunity again like the Lions currently have. 6-2 in an awful division with one of the easiest schedules in the NFL in the last 9 so I kind of feel like Holmes missed an opportunity to fill vital areas of need with, again, a good amount of draft capital to work with (4 picks in the first 3 rounds) and some cap flexibility to add a significant player. Not only are they missing a guy opposite of Hutch especially with Houston hobbled even when he returns probably but they are hooped if Hutch goes down. Also, Will Harris is their next guy in line if Sutton or Jacobs goes down which we saw against Baltimore what occurs when that happens so Holmes standing pat makes the path to a SB that much harder especially when all the competitors added a significant player. There's also the matter of their young guys about to become much more expensive especially after next season as well as Goff so there's a small window here under Goff's current contract and the core guys on their rookie contract to take advantage of, basically a 2 year window before Sewell, St. Brown and Goff are all due for monster raises. The team is good, even very good perhaps, but I don't see this as a Superbowl contender as is with weak pass rush from the Front 4 against good teams and paper thin corner depth. When you're 6-2 headed into a manageable schedule, SB should become the bar I'd think so I think Holmes misread the room in this case by sticking with the patient approach.

  18. I can agree with that. In regards to your hypothetical, I think that's on target too. I know I've tried to understand a subject on this site only to feel like others are feel I'm condoning the GOP or Trump, but I'm sure I've done that to others as well. Trying to not bias a topic by bringing in a perceived bias is pretty much a constant thought in my head when I post here.

  19. I think the forum is definitely war hawk moreso than previously but I think that happened with Ukraine war. The current war is pushing it more hawkish. But I also do think that Democrats and Liberals (not leftists, people slightly to the right of them) in general have become more war hawkish. I am more hawkish as well. It's my contention that there was a prevalence, but a much lower prevalence, of antisemitic actions on campuses prior to October 7, and an explosion after October 7th. However, before October 7th, discussions of antisemitism on campuses was largely absent here. Now I will go into hypothetical land so feel free to disregard my hypothetical as you see fit: I also think that prior to October 7th, if a poster started posting about WHY the prevalence of antisemitic actions on campuses was happening/increasing (which are literally crimes) they would not be accused of condoning such acts. I am a trained and degreed criminologist - trying to explain why crimes happen in order to decrease their prevalence - is the essence of the field. I've worked on studies on the etiology of lynchings, software piracy, drug use, and several other crimes. In no way were those efforts to condone such acts, and arguing so indicts (pun intended) the entire field of criminology. They are efforts to understand the cause and proscribe potential solutions. Thus far, the only one that has come close to vocally agreeing with my take is 84 and I appreciate him reading what I actually posted and seeing my point.

  20. I agree. I also think we should take some time and enjoy this though. Best team in the North by what feels like a fairly wide margin, probably the youngest very good team in the NFL, and not only a legitimate Super Bowl threat, but also a threat to make this success sustainable. Even when the Lions were good in recent past years, it felt like it was talent they had lucked into (Stafford, Calvin, and Suh), surrounded by band aids and patchwork. This feels like a real team. And the Packers are 2-5.

  21. I think it's fair to call the Rangers a legit WS champ. They tied for the 3rd best record int the AL. They beat both teams ahead of them 5-0 (4-0 on the road) and beat the team they were tied with (4-0 on the road). They were in 1st most of the year in their division.

  27. Hold up. I realize I'm old. And I don't go to fast fooderies. But I can't just roll up to Taco Bell and say, "I like baseball, I would like my complimentary taco, please"? And they can look at me and make general assumptions that, middle aged guy, probably a baseball fan, just get him a taco so we can get back to watching tik tok videos on the clock? What kind of promotion is this?

  28. My former spouse sat next to Will Venable’s mother on a several hour flight to DC a few months ago so at least she’s happy the Rangers won. And the better team did win and it was an AL team although I don’t really give a crap about that anymore. With all the interleague games, the two leagues seem pretty much identical to me. I used to feel a sense of participation and identification, when the AL won the All-Star game or the World Series but no more. Maybe I just grew up. Finally. I hope we’re the better team that wins the World Series next year. After all, all sorts of teams have risen from the ashes lately and I’m still hopelessly addicted to this club so it could happen.

  33. The first time I was really frustrated with Monty. People will make excuses but I really just didn't see it necessary for four guys to just stand around and wait for Cade to do something the last 6 minutes of the game. We made 3 field goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.

  34. This is a frustrating L. Cade tried to play hero ball and while he had some bad breaks (including once again getting no calls from the refs), it really cost us in the 4th quarter. He's shooting well from outside right now but that pretty much gets negated when he is just out there dribbling the ball around trying to create offense with little to no success. The Blazers got back into the game because Sharpe got hot when Ivey stopped playing defense and then they won the game when the Pistons stopped moving the ball and just waited for Cade to take over.

  35. You are leaving out the biggest reality. Ignoring Hamas and pretending they are not doing anything to inflame the situation and have no responsibility for provoking israel into their response. There was a cease fire on Oct 6. Arabs broke it. Savagely. Yet it’s rare to see that acknowledged by people who go after Israel for their response… hence the charges of antisemitism. And harassing and targeting Jews that are not in Israel is wrong and antisemitic regardless of what beef the persons grandparents had. there’s been a wave of this ever since Oct 7. here’s a Twitter account that tracks down these people and properly shames them. It’s satisfying seeing people get fired for their hate.

  46. I think some people are aghast or offended at the suggestion that there might be crazy/hateful people that otherwise generally align with them politically, even if further to the extreme. Left/Right is a very broad box obviously. But it cannot be denied that there's antisemetic feelings among the extremes of both wings. Different reasons and motivations but hate is hate. It doesn't mean that if a person leans left or considers themself a lefty that they are being charged as antisemtic.
