I guess if the problem is that the GOP will misappropriate the amendment in response, the solution isn't to pretend the amendment doesn't exist. They could and may misappropriate the amendment regardless of any precedent.4 points

Interesting to see a story in the NYT today about Fetterman deciding he's no longer a 'progressive' and he's OK with taking flak from the left - mostly about Israel but also immigration. The Dems do need to jettison the progressive approach on immigration and make a deal on the border - the current stance hurts them a lot with voters. There are very few voters anywhere happy with a chaotic situation at the border, and there is a broad public understanding that asylum rules passed with the intent of protecting political refugees are now being routinely abused by economic advantage seekers. You can have sympathy for economic advantage seekers and still understand that the law as it exists requires a process and limits and the practical outcome of letting people into the country as political refugees when they are not is an abuse of the law. The US political consensus has not produced legal sanction to an open border and regardless of one's sympathies, it is true that for the left to try to force the border open by normalizing abuse of asylum claims is just as much an end around of the democratic process as anything the right does and it ticks off large numbers of voters in the same way.3 points

He was happy the Cardinals won, but disappointed that it was a poorly played series by the Tigers. We were hoping for a classic like 34 and 68. Plus, at 82 years old, he had kind of lost some of his energy for the game...for a lot of the same things I complain about now. He is still with us.3 points

So, if anyone wants to hold onto the well regulated militia as the right to have whatever weaponry one wants to because it’s in the constitution, then they must also adhere to this as well, right?3 points

My only take on the Colorado Supreme Court is it is kind of sad a court has to make that call. I just can't see how January 2021 hasn't made Trump a non-starter for so many. Just pathetic idiocy from the right wing.3 points

People mostly 'believe' lies that make them comfortable in their pre-existing prejudices. To a degree I will defend and agree with '84 that there is a level of dishonesty at work where people are claiming 'belief' because they willfully refuse to 'let' themselves know/learn what is true. They make a conscious choice to protect themselves from the truth. I wouldn't justify people like that either.1 point

I have a different version of that: Basically, I 100% disagree. This is why: IMO, if someone's "belief" is based on a lie, then it's not "honest", it is, simply, a "lie". Whether they are lying to themselves, or have been lied to and fallen for a lie, or don't have the capacity to differentiate between the truth and a lie... or for any reason, if someone is perpetuating a lie than they are still, in fact, a liar and not honest. Conveniently, MAGA is simply following Trump's lead. Who created the lie of the election being stolen prior to a single vote even being cast. Also conveniently, following Trump's lead allows someone to "pretend" to be a true believer and to "honestly" argue that Biden actually "stole" the election, based on what Trump is "sayin'"... They are all liars. IMO.1 point

Not for anything but wouldn't a Muslim ban run counter to the First Amendment? Freedom of religion. Especially since several of the founders fought extremely hard for that particular clause. The idea of a Christian Nation under any President comes extremely close to the Church of England that the "Patriots" fought to rid themselves from. It just wasn't over tea and taxes1 point

This doesn't help the Democrats at all. It probably helps Trump if anything. I don't believe he should be allowed to run, but I am 99% sure he's not going to go to prison and also that he will be eligible to run. it's best they figure out how to beat him in the election.1 point

Their talking point is his “refusal to secure the border” and “student loans” is considered insurrection. Seriously. The WSJ said that.1 point

No person shall ... hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath ... as an officer of the United States ... to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same ... so, the 14th amendment requires no convictions. Confederates who were booted or barred from fed government did not get a trials where they argued about Northern aggression. any conviction of Trump does not hurt the argument he engaged insurrection or rebellion, but conviction is both 1) not needed under the 14th amendment and 2) not relevant without the 14th amendment.1 point

He hasn't been indicted on any charges related to insurrection though, correct? Let alone found guilty. I mean he's right up there with OJ in terms of being guilty, but I hate to set this precedence. Honestly, isn't this also election interference by the Colorado AG / CO supreme court?1 point

My impression of that saga wasn't that the Lions didn't want to pay him, but that his agent wanted more money that the Lions initially offered, and the Lions weren't willing to enter into negotiations while the market passed them by and cornered them into having to sign Williams. So when their imposed deadline came and went for Williams' agent, they weren't going to stand around begging him to sign, they just went to the market and got someone better for about the same amount. From a POD article about it: In any event, I am positive Jamaal would be having a far better season here than he is having in New Orleans.1 point
