  1. I dispute that his resume suggests this is a mirage. He did have hand/wrist issues the past couple years that hampered his hitting, but he was an above average MLB hitter 2019-2021. He's only moderately exceeding his PECOTA/ZIPS/etc. projections.

  3. I don’t think I’ve seen his name brought up, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Andy Ibanez’ name come up in trade rumors. He’s arbitration eligible for 3 more seasons and we know his resume hitting bs LHPs. He’s also 31 years old already, which adds an interesting wrinkle given his contract control.

  6. I have no idea who the heck Joe Chapp is or how he knows anything about this other than what's being publicly reported, but personally, I'm rooting for MLB to take over the broadcasts the way they have for the Padres or Diamondbacks. Clean screen, watermarked MLB logo only, smallish score box tucked in the corner. I'd prefer it to be in the top right corner rather than the bottom right corner, but even as is, it's way better than the constant 24/7 Bally crawl giving me scores from other sports, program promotions, and (ick) betting lines. In fact, that's what I fear from a new network the Tigers might start themselves, whether alone or with the Pistons or Red Wings: it would have gambling feces smeared all over it, nonstop, on the order of Apple TV+.

  9. So you know how they introduce the actors during the Leave It To Beaver opening credits, right? "Leave it to Beaver! Starring Barbara Billingsley ... Hugh Beaumont ... Tony Dow ... and Jerry Mathers ... as The Beaver." Well, the old **** Van Dyke Show, which I still watch on occasion, has the practically the same type of introduction: "The **** Van Dyke Show! Starring **** Van Dyke ... Rose Marie ... Morey Amsterdam ... Larry Matthews ... and Mary Tyler Moore." And I just can't help but add at the end: "... as the beaver." Which ... oh, hell, yeah ...

  12. Not saying I agree with it totally, but the idea is that Trump and the media have a "Sam and Ralph" relationship where they are enemies but, ultimately, are in a mutually beneficial relationship where Trump gets attention and to run against them and where media entities drive consumers to their product. It is worth noting that news media, across all platforms, has seen precipitous declines in ratings and clicks over the last four years.... without a doubt, they will gain numbers if Trump gets back into the White House. I honestly the situation goes beyond this, though, in the sense that the media and Biden have never had a great relationship either (the whole NYT interview in 2020 and the fame gained by the elevator attendant afterward is case in point of the dynamic there).

  18. If you knew you could sign Kelly for a few more years, you’d be emboldened to move Jake, perhaps as a trade sweetener, with Dingler replacing him.

  21. I would view Flaherty and Kelly on the same basis: My first preference would be an extension prior to the trade deadline. Flaherty 2-3 years... if he's agreeable and the two sides can come to an agreement. Same with Kelly. I wasn't thinking about him so much because we have Rogers and Dingler-on-the-cusp.... But to G2's point: He's definitely better than Rogers. So... if we did sign him to, say a 2-year extension, then I would let Spring Training decide things. Meaning... an injury decides things for the team (who makes the opening roster). No injury, and let's say Dingler proves, at least in spring training, that he's ready for MLB... then maybe the team makes a spring training trade of Rogers, or even if Dingler starts in AAA again but shows that he's ready for the jump, an early-season trade of Rogers... to open the door up for Dingler. I think Rogers will have trade value. But my straight-up preference for 2025 catchers would be Kelly and Dingler. So if that happens next year... then whatever Harris gets for Rogers next year is fine by me. And if Rogers is able to hold off Dingler all of next year, sobeit. But it will take all of the above to actually happen (not the Flaherty part...). Nothing has to be decided, today. Let that hash out next year. EXCEPT... Whoever has NOT signed an extension by the trade deadline, is an exposure to being lost at the end of the season for nothing. And is probably - actually, most definitely - worth much more at the trade deadline. So those two are going to be traded at the deadline, IMO... UNLESS they are signed to an extension prior to. I would not be opposed to extending either one, or both of them.

  22. That trade reeked of a deal where Wingenter had an upward mobility clause, and it was confirmed by somebody on the Red Sox beat. So, similar to Trayce Thompson a couple of years ago or Jonathan Davis last year, they either had to call up Wingenter or offer him to every other team and make a deal. Not much leverage in that situation. Those clauses aren't public, so it's tough to know when they are coming.

  23. They're looking at his stint at Western Kentucky in 2023, with: 12.2K's/ 9, 2.3BB's/ 9, and 5.2H's/ 9 for a 0.84 WHIP, and trying to figure out if they can squeeze that kind of performance out of him through the A-ball and higher levels... Wingenter was worthless so if Weins just craps out then nothing was lost anyways... I would call it a calculated risk. A good one to take.

  24. I said this in the other thread too but for the vast majority of people nothing has changed. Yes Biden is old and might die or need to resign. That is as true in 2024 as it was in 2020. Voters were ok with that and having a Kamala Harris presidency and they are ok with it now. This is nothing new because in addition to possibly Biden dying, Clarence Thomas, Sam Alito, or Donald Trump might die too within 4 years. Having a President Biden or Harris deal with that is preferable to the only other alternative.

  27. Hilarious. Two pros who can't play a lick of defense and he sin-ate one of those contracts to get a bunch of meh 2nds and had to give up a promising young player to help Dallas sign other guys. The Fontecchio contract was his first good move of the offseason. The other stuff is a bunch of nothing, but I didn't expect much this offseason anyway so it is what it is. The team goes as this core goes.

  29. We saw how Trump handled the COVID crisis first hand, we also know he's going to hand Ukraine over to Putin (as well as whatever else Vlad wants). Trump failed the leadership test 2017-2021. We also know the second time around he's likely to appoint more sycophants to do his bidding (televised executions anyone?) I'll take a half in the bag Biden over Trump who has never ever played with a full deck upstairs.

  31. In 2020, there was one goal. Beat Trump. I remember the shock nationwide when Buttigieg, running third in the polls after having won Iowa and tied with Bernie for winning in New Hampshire, dropped out and endorsed Biden after South Carolina. It was considered a very early drop out, as he still had something of a chance. But he saw the unlikelihood of a comeback, and recognized that beating Trump in the general (and - sure - getting his cabinet position as a thank you) was more important than sticking around in the spotlight for a few more primaries. Why is there this bitching about Biden now? Who gives a flying **** if he's old? He was old in 2020 too. Deal with it in 2028. Dems need to get over themselves and get behind him. Now.

  33. I believe this is the 2nd or 3rd game I've watched with Carlos Pena and I have to say I really like him. Offers great insight to what a batter is thinking at the plate without going too overboard into the "back in my day" or "what I would do in this situation", brings up past experiences but also speaks in generalities. Definitely the best I've heard for us in awhile.

  36. OK, so, Craig Monroe was ordered to leave the ballpark within minutes of the post coming to light, even though the post was deleted in those minutes between when it was posted and when he was sent packing. That tells me pretty conclusively that the Tigers and Bally were waiting for any opportunity to get rid of him. I can't hazard a guess as to what else might have been happening between the scenes, but I could see during the very first broadcast that star jock Craig Monroe was big-timing Jason Benetti, the nerdy gimpy new kid with the googly eyes, and I gotta believe that had at least something to do with it. The thing from the story that practically shocked me was that Monroe was not even an employee of either Bally or the team, that he was a contractor working on a game-to-game basis without health or any other benefits, and without any guaranteed minimum of games. I don't know whether that's common for in-game analysts for the Tigers, or for teams in general. Point is, though, we have most definitely seen the last of Craig Monroe, and speaking only in terms of his performance on the air, I couldn't be happier about it.
