I've never seen so much second guessing of the choice of the sixth reliever in an extra inning marathon. It's almost as if re-entry was an option or something. Are we pining for Vanasco?5 points

I am truly not interested in any drama accruing to this game in the bottom of the 9th. I was elated, dropkicked, beat up,left for dead and continually resurrected then finally murdered again in the alley of this series in last night’s contest and I’m not interested in reliving that nightmare. Just get the damn job done.2 points

The thing that amazes me is that I'm still seeing some writers who think high turnout will benefit Trump more. That just feels so counter-factual I can't buy it. On the D side you may be pulling traditionally under voted parts of the population into the voting process in minority women, Hispanics and young voters, plus the general 4 yr demographic shift. Who could Trump possibly be pulling in who he didn't already have? What deep repository of White Males would suddenly be more energized about him than when he 1st hit the scene and why? The GenX'ers suddenly becoming more radically GOP? I don't think there is any reasonable answer to that question.2 points

I just meant they only talk about KJ's hit and not the shots to Laporta. I bet Kelly Stafford sets the Rams fan straight.2 points

If they can't find a cheap right-handed hitter batter (who can't field) better than Torkelson this off season, then Harris isn't the genius people are making him out to be. The only reason to keep Torkelson is if you think you can fix him.2 points

I actually watched most of this game and I wasn't overtly impressed with either team, which is good for the Lions has both these teams were considered contenders. GB lost despite a fumble and 2 INTs from the Eagles. As for Philly? Hurts seems to be still making poor decisions. So this is a pretty much a best case senario for the Lions... GB loses, both teams look questionable. Having said that... this is the first game of the year and I expect to see some rusty players. I expect we'll see from rust from the Lions as well so I don't want to put TOO much emphasis on one game of lackluster play. As for Jordon Love: I don't wish ill-will on any individual, but I also am not going to be upset if this give the Lions an advantage this season. I'm quite sure no team out there was upset that the Lions secondary was a MASH unit last season. I doubt any other team's fan said: "I just wish the Lions didn't have so many CB injuries so that we faced an even better team." Well... maybe the Raven's fans did.2 points

The mask slipped a bit with COVID... prior to, he was much more focused on the data, but he kinda veered off and became what he had previously loathed, a pundit. That continues apace today, along with the gambling (which, tbh, should instantly make people skeptical of his model for ethics reasons IMO). There's a bit of a historical parallel to a figure that comes up in engineering ethics in my field: William Mulholland. Mulholland is the man most responsible for making Los Angeles what it is today, a thriving metropolis, completing the LA Aqueduct and other public works projects that delivered water from the Sierra Nevadas down the otherwise dry and barren LA Basin. Mulholland was a self taught civil engineer, no formal schooling, and, from the ground floor, worked his ass off to climb the food chain to become Chief Engineer at the DWP. (Obviously a lot of the work he did in the early years wasn't good, such as swindling landowners in Rural California, but strictly from an engineering perspective, the body of work was impressive). At his height, he could have run for Mayor... and to this day, Mulholland Drive and other things in LA are named after the guy. But as his career went on, he got distracted. He got lazy. He became further and further resistant to criticism. And eventually his career ended: the St. Francis Dam, which he inspected hours prior, collapsed and killed over 400 people. The parallel to Silver is that he hustled and built a model that saw great success in prior election cycles, particularly in 2012. And who knows, maybe he's got it all figured out this time too.... but he seems... distracted to me. He seems like he dedicates a lot of time to other pursuits, such as sports gambling and poker, and he's incredibly resistant to any sort of criticism that he gets. Gets really defensive. And is just coasting on his reputation. That's when I start asking questions.... as adults, no matter what we do for a living, you always have to be learning, you always have to be trying to improve yourself, and you should never be getting high off of your own supply. Because that's how you lose a step, and that's when bad things can start happening career wise.2 points

Doesn’t look like a very well attended game. I saw a couple games there with a good friend when I would go up to the bay area, which would’ve been in ‘83 or ‘84 and he had season tickets second or third row on the third base side and I liked the park. It was not a bad experience and you could take the BART there, park the car somewhere down the line, easy access. During batting practice, I locked eyes with Ricky Henderson and I was just a chump in the stands and he stared me down because he’s competitive in everything even with morons he’s competitive and yeah, he definitely won. I was intimidated and almost thought I should be wearing a dress, “not that there’s anything wrong with that.“2 points

That kind of thing has to start at home and if more parents are held responsible for enabling their kids to do this, that might happen. Wish we didn't need SROs, but we do. Can't be buddies with your kid all the time. Sometimes you need to be the wet blanket. I feel like if your teenage kids don't act like they hate you, at least once in awhile, then you're probably not doing your job. You have to be the final word. This guy bought his kid a murder weapon after he was investigated. That's why we need SROs - parents like that.1 point

Regarding the idea that Trump voter defection all happened back in 2018 or in 2020, I think J6 happening after that would add to the defections. And to the intensity of independent voters who might be tempted to side with him. Not everyone of them, of course, but enough I am fervently hoping.1 point

That would make it inaccurate cause "Super Bowl Win" didn't come with the trade. Also Might as well include "division title, playoff wins and franchise relevancy for first time in 30+ years" in the Lions column then.1 point

It would be accurate if they included "Super Bowl Win" in the Rams column.1 point

Well, you and I both know that's not going to happen, and while I agree with you on the principle, if not on all the specific details, of Cheney's and that entire administration's war-criming, the 100% certainty that she would never do that is not going to factor into whether I root for her to win the election even a little bit. In fact, ironically, I would think that if any of this year's candidates would offer up Bush and Cheney to the Hague, it would be Trump, not because he is horrified by their actions in the White House—since it's a safe bet that in reality he actually admires those actions—but only because he hates their ****ing guts to the core and would do just about anything to shove it straight up their asses sideways.1 point

I predicted super high turnout for 2020 on the old board, and I nor anyone else didn't have to be Nostra****ingdamus to get that one right. So I'm gonna go ahead and predict that this is going to be the greatest turnout for an election in American history, at least in numbers, if not in in percent of electorate, certainly higher than 2020.1 point

There is no risk to keeping him as you can stash him in Toledo but I wouldn’t let his presence get in the way of any plans. Approach the off season as if you need a 1B and more RH bats and see what happens1 point

These are some of the worse announcers in the business. Not surprised they haven’t made any comment on the absence of Edwards. Is he hurt, is he benched, is this some weird rotation from the coaches?1 point
-
A lot of overreactions to Mize and Tork. Mize can be an important contributor to our rotation for years. Probably not an ace, but after TJ and back surgeries, I’ll be happy with a #3/4 guy if that’s what he settles into. There is no reason to cut bait with Tork. He’s controllable for many seasons. I’d probably source a contingency option this offseason, but I definitely wouldn’t cut him or sell low. I do think we need to get a major league bat to provide some protection for Tork, Greene, etc. And not a Canha-type.1 point

I wanted Moore to get the chance to prove himself after being apart of a national championship team. But this is a disaster and won'tbbe getting better anytime soon I fear. The coaching staff he has put together does not instill confidence in the ability to turn this around. The recruiting class and transfer class he brought in doesn't instill confidence in that regard right. Not using the portal to bring in a starting QB or not having a good talent waiting in the wings to be developed is a concern. There's nothing about this program right now that makes me feel like they'll reapete any of last year's success anytime soon. It's only two games in, but it's a bad start. Moore getting promoted is looking increasingly like Lloyd wanting Mike DeBoard become to become his successor. Lloyd didn't get his way but Harbaugh got his way with Moore succeeding him.1 point

I grew up in Kentwood, MI and played little league there in the 70s. One of the adults who started the league was Dolly Konwinski. I knew her son and I got to know Dolly. She was extremely kind and giving, and she really knew baseball. She played several years in the all-American girls professional baseball league, mostly for the Grand Rapids Chicks. She made a big impression on me in my youth, when most adults in my life were not so kind. She passed in 2018. So this post is given to honor Dolly. And to ask if anyone knows if there is a decent documentary out there that is focused exclusively on the GR Chicks? I've seen AAGPBL docs, and would love to see one specific to the Chicks. TIA1 point

Cheney’s endorsement shows that today’s GOP is far removed from the party of Reagan and Bush. To those low information (not stupid) voters who are busy living their lives and not paying attention to details like us dorks, it presents another data point to enforce the idea that maybe both sides aren’t the same. A lot of people do think that. They see references to multiple trials with Trump and these former republicans going against him… again it doesn’t take much to make a difference.1 point

LOL - Heck yes I would have used him before Miller. If I lose with Vanasco at least I've learned something about someone that's still in play. Miller is a lost cause.1 point
-
there are times it's easy to lose the forest for the trees. Not many guys with a sub one WHIP fold like a cheap suit with a game on the line like Miller. 7 BS is a real measurement too.1 point

If he can stay healthy this year, they can work on pitch shapes in the lab during the off season.1 point

Hurts and Love were two QBs who got massive contracts based on one big season. Neither looked impressive and Hurts was making the same mistakes he was making last year. Just poor decisions. It's remarkable how the Eagles didn't lose that game.1 point
-
His 0.94 WHIP is one good reason. So, he must be getting somebody out. My point was that the starters don't pitch enough innings, so that the relievers get over worked and Hinch is sometimes forced to use pitchers in spots where they are not best suited. Even with that, I think Hinch has managed the staff brilliantly.1 point
-
Jordan Love will be fine. He will rehab and will probably get back to the same level. If not, he has $100M in guaranteed money on the contract that he got after only 1 season as a starter. The Packers on the other hand are totally ****ed and I absolutely love it. It’s a huge benefit for the Lions if he’s out for the year. **** the Packers!1 point
-
still don't know why Hinch even considered using Miller, but it is what it is. If he is still on the roster tomorrow it will be a real FO fail. Basically one guy over the coarse of the season is why we are still behind the Twins/Royals.1 point

I'm not one for inter division trades, but I would consider trading Jake Fromm to the Packers for a draft pick.1 point

A's need to make those baserunning mistakes before they score, not after.1 point

The commitment to go heavy left handed has made Torkelson pretty much the indespensible player in the lineup and now it's too depressing because it's looking like a fail.1 point

Hopefully they've burned Miller in a losing effort and he can't pitch tomorrow.1 point

We’re talking 1/1s, not down the draft picks. Nobody else would have passed on Casey Mize, and nobody else would have passed on Spencer Torkelson, and it doesn’t make the Tigers dullards or luddites because they didn’t go against that universal grain, regardless of how Brady Singer does after the fact.1 point

I agree that “you’re welcome” feels stiff, and I usually end up saying “of course” or “sure thing” or “sure”. I would never say “no problem” because when I myself hear it, it frequently feels freighted with underlying feelings that are unspoken, and I don’t think I have it fully figured out. Maybe it’s because it implies that it would normally be considered a problem. In any event it usually makes me feel a little uneasy. I would bet that most of the time people don’t mean anything by it, and that they’re just delivering it by rote, which would mean they’re not engaging.1 point

Hurts just chucks a terrible pass into double coverage. If he doesn't get it together, that contract is going to get ugly. The Eagles tacked on a lot of void years. They are stuck with him.1 point

Has Madrigal ever played as well as he looked like he would be since his injury? Of course you can say Mize's value has been driven down by injuries too, but Madrigal may have been more promising before his than Mize ever was in the majors.1 point

I wanted Alec Bohm just because I always want position players. I don't really think most fans know enough about college and high school players to legitimately criicize the picks though. I admit I don't.1 point

This entry will be as random as random gets most likely but… My wife and I are going to traverse to Kinston, NC tonight to say goodbye to an old baseball park. This weekend will mark the end of Grainger Stadium’s association with affiliated baseball. The park can’t be brought up to MLB’s standards so the Down East Wood Ducks (High A affiliate of the Texas Rangers) will relocate to a brand new ballpark next year in Spartanburg, S.C. Grainger Stadium is in a flood zone to begin with so the writing has been on the wall a while now. As a big MiLB fan I hate to see the team leave. This will leave N.C. with nine affiliated teams in 2025. We’ve known the GM there for years and have to get down there one more time. I’m sure a summer league team will land there soon. As a perk, if you’d call it that, the Texas Rangers World Series trophy will be on display there tonight. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grainger_Stadium1 point

Pointless trivia of the day... did you know that the Cleveland Guardians actually originated in Grand Rapids? They were originally founded in 1894 as the Grand Rapids Rustlers with the Western League. in 1900 they moved to Cleveland and changed to the 'Lake Shores,' then the Bluebirds in 1901, the Bronchos in '02, the Naps from '03-'14, then became the Indians in 1915.1 point
