I’m really saddened by the passing of Fernando Valenzuela. It feels personal. When I spent six months recuperating from a bad motorcycle accident in 1982 and couldn’t go anywhere I listened to all 162 of Vin Scully’s broadcasts which was the only baseball available in Tucson, Arizona and Fernando was a big part of that. The Dodgers ended this season, I think, one game out of first place behind the Atlanta Braves, and I was honestly disappointed. It’s not like Ernie Harwell’s broadcast could reach all the way from Detroit to Tucson. So, for one year I was a Dodgers fan and a huge Fernando fan. Then of course in 1984 and no longer laid up and fully recovered I was able follow our own season as well as possible from such great distance — and with three new friends who’d recently moved from Detroit to Tucson — I forgot all about the Dodgers easily. But forgetting Fernando is hard. I will easily pull for the Yankees in the World Series, though, simply because of Sue.4 points

Trump could perform an abortion on a 12 year old girl that he impregnated, put it on PPV and the evangelical right wingers would pay $49.99 to watch it and slut shame the girl.3 points

I'd steer clear of anything on Newsweek. It's not what it used to be. Remember when JD Vance said one valid reason to oppose certification on Jan 6 was things being out in the press that were inaccurate? This is an inside job. Create a fake scandal then when it gets out and debunked, that provides the fuel to question all the votes already cast and create doubt, blah blah blah. This is a plant.2 points

“…. That were Nazis, or whatever” Are you kidding me????…. “Nazis, or WHATEVER” . Son of a bitch. Quite obviously, the problem is not solely Trump anymore. The problem is every one of these sycophants that will justify every hateful thing he says, looking to make it the new normal. You can all go to hell.2 points

Fernando-mania was something else. It's the closest thing to Fidrych '76 that I can remember. I just watched this clip the other day:2 points

Fernando Mania was probably the closest thing we had to Bird Mania. They both died too young.2 points

It won't happen, but he really needs to come out on camera... Along with Esper and Mattis.2 points

I don't know why this praising Hitler thing is shocking anyone. That's like saying Kerry Carpenter likes to hit home runs.1 point

The only thing that would surprise me would be if Drumpf were to go on national television, renounce his wealth, public life, and lying ways-then spend the rest of his life in a monastery upon taking a vow of silence. (I can dream, can't I?)1 point

These rumors seem like a diversion. Until anyone reputable reports anything, if there even is anything, probably shouldn't engage1 point

Just finished reading Hillbilly Elegy. What a self-aggrandizing and backstabbing prick JD Vance is. It's like watching someone get all the right numbers despite not having any of the books they're contained within. A miracle. But instead of putting them together into an answer that contains something good for the world, he gets the entirely wrong answer, tells everyone in his community who didn't make it that it's their fault they didn't get those numbers, and then starts kicking at their hands on the fast exiting train towards generational wealth. The unwritten epilogue is a gem too. Where he abandons his communities entirely and decides that being a sycophant, attached forever at the hip to a wannabe dictator, who would sell him down a river - plausibly instruct his millions of cult-like followers to kill him - in an instant if it benefitted him, is a better life than living a less successful life behind the scenes in Middletown, OH or Jackson, KY.1 point

If he’s going to miss two games, please make it TEN and GB and not GB and HOU.1 point

This is disgusting on Halperin's part. If he doesn't believe it's true, he shouldn't be teasing it and if he does then out with it man. What a little click baiting twerp.1 point

I personally think he deserves this... should be a reminder to others to not get too involved with Drumpf's legal issues. https://www.npr.org/2024/10/22/nx-s1-5161612/rudy-giuliani-defamation-lawsuit-watches-apartment1 point

Really sad about Fernando. He burst onto the MLB scene as magical as Mark Fidrych. RIP1 point

Pooring cold water as I am wont to do, beware coming to overly positive conclusions here. The hitting environment at AFL is extreme before factoring in that teams are largely not sending their top pitchers.1 point

It's not really doom and gloom. I said in the previous post that I didn't expect big changes this offseason but the reality is that it's the same young core group surrounded by cast-off vets just like previous years. At least Monty isn't here anymore so that's something to get excited about.1 point

Or perhaps enjoy the radio broadcasts of the 1963 WS, which featured a voice that will be familiar to most of you.1 point

RIP Fernando. Horrible news on its own but throw in the Yankees And Dodgers WS and 1981… this really stinks. He was only 63. That’s shocking to me. I was just a kid for Fernando mania and here he is only 12 years older?1 point

I wonder how much of this is thanks to Dan Campbell’s aggressiveness. All but his first season were under Campbell. Most if not all NFL punters can send a punt 40+ yards. If you’re across midfield though, you don’t want to boom it, for obvious reasons. Which means punts from the opponents’ 40, which are fair caught at the 10, bring down both the net and gross punt distances. Under Campbell though, if you get across midfield and it’s 4th and <5, you ain’t punting. Punting is for the weak. So if you’re a punter under Campbell, the vast majority of your punts are coming from your own territory, where you can let it rip.1 point

Yeah, it's all because they need to accommodate TV. The huge money from the TV contracts is significant. Like you said, they need to schedule the time slots way in advance. I just don't like waiting so long between series. Of course, I feel the same way with the stupid 2 week wait for the Super Bowl.1 point

It's another reason why playoffs are pretty meaningless to me. Taking 4 days off in between series is not the way baseball is supposed to be.1 point
