  5. Having virtually every big name FA go to one of the Yankees, Mets or LAD for stupid amounts the past few years has really put a damper on my enthusiasm for the game.

  6. We have almost zero waste. Most well run restaurants will be the same way. Some exceptions. First one is when you first open a new place. Traffic is so sporadic and unpredictable. We have nights we do $1,000 and the next day do $30,000. You have to be ready for the big night because you generally only get one shot with a new customer. If they come in and half your menu is 86'd they wont give you a second shot normally. Second is weather. If you normally do 1200 people on a certain night and there is a snow/ice storm and 50 people show up. Well, its a bad time. After about a year you really see waste drop off to nothing. Chefs have enough data on how busy you are and that obviously helps them on supply orders. Plus, your staff is fully trained up and that always equals less waste. We also do 50% profit sharing and let me tell ya, that really makes your staff pay attention to detail when the waste is coming out of their own pocket basically. We also do a staff/family meal every day. So on the odd chance we do have some waste, we make it available to the group doing family meal that day. As far as donating, we tried. Its too sporadic for them to dedicate a volunteer to pick things up, etc. So we implemented a program that lets our employees volunteer 5 hours a month and we pay them for it. Originally that was just for food banks but now we let them do it for most charities. We aren't going to pay them to donate time at the local right wing militia or some free Hamas group. Religious charities are fine, just not the extreme ones. Unfortunately, not a lot of employees take advantage of this.

  7. You find one legitimate case, which spurs rumors of more, then you simply claim millions. Come on CM, you've seen this for years from MAGA, it shouldn't be this hard to figure out. 😉

  10. The impression that everyone inside govt is corrupt comes from the fact that the most corrupt people are typically the ones that climb to the top and thus have the most influence. Big companies are the same way.

  14. As far as Beasley goes. I think he has move value than Bogie did. Younger and more important, much cheaper. Not a lot of people can trade for a $20M contract. Pretty much everyone can trade for a $7M contract. More competition = more value, hopefully. Pretty easy to decide on trading him or not. Do they have a shot at the playoffs? If yes, keep him. If no, trade him.

  15. Ok, that parses better than the way I read it at first! To me it should come down to his shooting. In today's league if a guy with Ivey's athleticism can become a real shooting threat, you want him.

  16. I have no doubt Harris knows what he is doing. His moves have all been just fine to good to great. But can he build a consistent playoff team without taking some risk? At some point, I think you have to make a trade or a free agent signing that is not safe. He spoke about calculated risk when he was hired and he is into his 3rd year and has done almost nothing risky. The biggest risk he took was passing on Langford for Clark, and that may still work out fine.

  17. It has some similarities to going for 2 to try to win the game with a late TD instead of kicking the extra point for a tie. Time left makes a big difference. Campbell made his decision because there was 40 seconds left and 0 timeouts. He may well have made a different decision if 30 seconds and 0 timeouts. What about 25 seconds and 1 timeout? And to re-iterate, the touchbacks to the 30 yard line and the way that FG attempts of 55+ are now so common will make coaches in Campbell’s position more likely to try to ice the game with a 1st down. So I agree with Jimbo. If Campbell’s decision truly had been reckless, it would not set a trend. But it was a logical decision. Simply against conventional wisdom. What’s unconventional today can become conventional pretty quickly.

  18. Yep, past data is huge. We have spreadsheets that incorporate the past 3 years of sales if available. We give more weight to last year than 2 years ago. And more to 2 years ago then 3. It gives us a baseline for supplies and staffing on individual nights. Your location and community calendar are also important. We have a couple of locations close to the town center. So we need to know is there a tree lighting ceremony, parade, festival, etc. So we can staff up. Close to a few high schools, so we need to know are 8 schools coming in this weekend for a big track meet or wrestling meet? That is a lot of parents that will want to eat. Is there a big craft show at the high school this weekend? Basically we need to know about anything that brings more people than normal to the area so we are ready for the spike.

  19. So Nashville signing Stamkos for 4 years @$8.0mm looks worse than it did this summer. Worries me a bit that the two names linked to the Wings in recent months as Yzerman possibly being interested were Stamkos and Trouba. Both would have been great gets ... on the day he took over the Wings in 2019. Both are still big names but both have faded since then. They would have been Ken Holland-like signings.

  20. This going for it on 4th down trend has been picked up by the league more than taking the wind in overtime.

  21. MLB has been losing their mind over the Tigers using basically two starting pitchers to get into the playoffs. I guess trend setting is what Detroit is known for now. I like it!

  22. I actually think Campbell is a trend setter with going for it on 4th down. So if you asked me 3 years ago, who would go for it on 4th down (instead of kicking the field goal), at the 30ish, 40 secs left, and a tied game. I would say no one would go for it. Although I think Campbell opened up other coaches to go for it on 4th down in unusual situations and multiple coaches would of done the same thing. I think going for it on 4th down is going to be like the 3 in the NBA. Its nice to have a team finally that sets the trends instead of getting on the trend too late.

  23. I loved this guy and his stats in the early 60's were just ridiculous for low strikeouts by a home run hitter. What an arm, he played left because Kaline was already in right. That's the best pair of corner outfielders for the Tigers for the past 75 years, maybe ever. Ernie Harwell just loved to say that name.

  25. I have no facts, but I think that goes on in many places. In the last couple of years here in Cornhole we now have...I don't know what to call it - a "soup kitchen." I know the local groceries, various stores, and restaurants donate. A wonderful thing, and good on them. I can't help but think when I walk into a grocery store how much inventory there is and how often it turns over. Especially produce, meats, bakery, and dairy. Almost everything has a shelf life, no pun intended. Unless you look in my pantry. 🙂

  29. No. I’d prefer they pass the savings onto the fans and the stadium event employees if they’re making so much money. Or invest it back into the cities that support the teams. but that’ll never happen.

  30. My issue is that it doesn’t feel like organic growth. The game isn’t exploding with popularity like the NFL which is creating this giant increase in guaranteed money. It feels like a few billionaires in ideal markets throwing money around because they can and it serves their personal interests.

  31. Call me insane, but with all of the struggles going on in the country, it’s getting really hard to read about the amounts of money high level baseball players are getting now. I’m all for them getting theirs….but good grief.

  32. It hasn’t been this way in the past but I think we may start seeing a stronger correlation between FA spending and winning. Expanded playoffs along with free spending by only a few will create a situation where just a rash of massive injuries will keep the top teams from making a deep playoff run every year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a push for a 5 game first round playoff series to further ensure the marquee teams and players are in the CS and WS.

  33. Is not being able to sign the top free agents that big of a problem for many clubs? I am not sure it is. An unintended consequence of these guys going for such big money to just a few teams is you take an unwise option off the table for most teams, something they might be happy about. Under a cap maybe Soto is within range but it would still be for a deal the signing club will wish was off the books for a good chunk of it.

  34. It will help the competitive balance when it comes to the acquisition and retention of players. We’ve always had a system where the top teams could spend more. Now, we’ve reached a point where 80% of the league doesn’t even have the option to consider an offer for top players. It’s not even about not wanting to spend the money. They don’t have the money. This will also have huge impact on teams trying to retain their players. Tarik Skubal will not be a Tiger in 2 years. They can not pay stupid dollars and term like he will get from the top teams. He will have to be traded at the deadline or maybe even will leave scot free if the team is in the playoff race. There won’t any debates to keep him or not and there won’t be anyone hammering Chris for not spending money. It’s really going to suck for all of us having to watch it happen knowing there’s nothing to be done. It’s sort of like this already but we will move to where it never happens that even a single young star stays with the non big money team that they came up with. Teams like the Tigers will become like a major league farm team for them. MLB is the only major sport without some type of cap. Something needs to be put in place that either slows the cost of doing business or at least brings that rapid growth inline with increased outside revenue. NFL and NBA have record TV deals and are branching out into new platforms. They are both seeing significant revenue growth that is driving salary up. Baseball is not in this category. Their TV deals are messy and in flux. I don’t see the financial growth of the league flourishing to the same levels that spending has. I see two VC billionaires spending crazy money for their own personal gain. I don’t see how any of it is good for the future of the game and seems like a recipe for disaster.

  38. If Jobe is going to be on the team at all this year then he’s going to start in Detroit. The potential draft compensation for rookie of the year is a big deal for smaller/mid market teams to compete. Now he might start in the pen to limit innings early on and let him learn big league hitters. Or they might skip a bunch of starts to do that which also means they need more cheap veteran depth.

  39. I don’t think Scott Harris would’ve come here if that were the case. But it is definitely the case that if we have five guys who end up being so good the Tigers have to pay each of them in excess of $30 million a year and some of them $50 million-$60 million (and the price goes up every year) there’s no way they will ever be able to hold onto them. So there will never be teams where we can get attached to players long-term like we did with the ‘68 era Tigers or the ‘84 era team. Baseball doesn’t work like that anymore for anyone besides three or four clubs. We live in an era of deplorable inequality and spectacles which keep the masses sedated in a sentimental La La Land that gets increasingly harder to feel sentimental about. The game is certainly losing its Ken Burns feel about it.
