Interesting thoughts from Charlie Angus on the anniversary of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's execution3 points

The Dodgers are now 9-4 and tied for 2nd in their division. The Tigers must have worn them down, just like so many teams were losing the week after playing the Lions.3 points

So it turns out there may be one upside to the MAGA resistance to measles vaccination: It's that the measles vaccine is actually a combination vaccine with Mumps, and if Mumps spreads in widely in Maga circles it can sterilize a good number of MAGA men and keep them from reproducing. Always look for the Sunny Side!2 points

It feels even worse with a day off coming up and the next game on Apple TV. No games on FDS until Saturday.1 point

I don't know why but losing to the Yankees feels like a tragedy beyond a normal loss and it leads one to feelings of dread and despair. Like why did you include parachute mines that looked like toys in the bombing run on the military facility that was next to the orphanage you warcriming swine?!1 point

Sure, but he’s doing absolutely nothing else well. On the other hand, it’s time to figure out what the plan is for him. Is he gonna be a 1B? 2B? DH? Elsewhere? He doesn’t have the athletic diversity to be moving around the diamond without extensive practice. He’s not a McKinstry/Ibanez/Don Kelly. So pick one spot and let him play it every day, be that in Detroit or Toledo. That might help his deer-in-headlights looking face a bit.1 point

What the F? Can’t believe she bent the knee. She also repeated Trump’s golden age for manufacturing rhetoric.1 point

the weakness in the strategy of trying to single out one country for tariff action is that China will just trans-ship through 3rd countries or even do some nominal finish value added there. The only way it actually works is if the rest of the world cooperates to pressure China - but of course cooperation is anathema to Trump, which is why all this screwing around appears to likely to fail in the end.1 point

The red ones were better. Pretty much any red jersey they have done has been nice. Except that dual racing stripe one during the Blake era. But I hate teams that make a jersey that has nothing to do with their colors.1 point

That's why tariffs or some other kind of strategy should be focused on China and not every country in the world. I think he's punishing the entire world just so he can brag about some little "victories" over some weak noncompetitive countries. It's like an NCAA football powerhouse, beating up on FCS teams, but losing the big games. Actually, they best thing he can do is to do nothing since he's clueless about the economy anyway.1 point

so looking for 3Bs with at least a couple of 3WAR seasons you get: Cabrera - who put up 14 WAR as a 3B but only played there for 2 years. after that: Moriarity and McManus (way back!), in the more modern era: Kell, Ray Boone, Inge, Fryman. Boone, Kell and Fryman were All-Stars and obviously Cabrera. Wert, Bookens and Rodriguez played there for fairly long stretches - so the position was stable, but neither was more than average production player. So the overall history is maybe average, but it's definitely been since Cabrera's first years here that it's been locked down and that's been a while - too long. Cabrera keeping his weight to 215 and staying at 3b for half a dozen years is still my most disappointed alternate baseball history.1 point

For being a weird war that nobody really understands The Crimean War had a lot of impact of media, culture and society: Flo Nightingale and the institutionalization of battlefield care and nursing and data analysis! Nightingale was an innovator in statistics; she represented her analysis in graphical forms to ease drawing conclusions and actionables from data. She is famous for usage of the polar area diagram, also called the Nightingale rose diagram, which is equivalent to a modern circular histogram. This diagram is still regularly used in data visualisation. Charge of the Light Brigade, "ours is not to question why..." The "Thin Red Line" which originated with war correspondent William Howard Russell's description of the Highlanders as a "thin red streak topped with steel" Placido Polanco in a balaklava waddling around the bases arms raised triumphant when Magglio Ordonez of the King's Own Detroit Guards Grenadiers hit the winning HR against the Oakland Cossacks in 2006.1 point

My son who’s 51 years younger than me and more in the mix of the world than I am has begged me to watch Seth Rogen‘s new Apple TV series The Studio and I’m glad I did. My initial resistance is how I tire at Hollywood’s autofellatioism which assumes that they themselves are the naval of the universe and something we all must care about and be fascinated by. But I have to say that aside from being almost Larry David cringe in the second episode, it’s pretty great, fast moving, and hilarious.1 point
