  1. I usually end up going alone a few times a year. I enjoy it. Last year I went to the Angels game that started at like 10 pm. I was already down there when they delayed it and the small storm system would.not.move. Otherwise I never would have went. I stayed in my car for almost 2 hours waiting for it to stop raining. At that point I was determined to see the game... and I needed to go to the bathroom so I figured I would walk in to at least have a beer and use the bathroom, then leave. But by that point they announced a starting time. I was the only person in my section. It's nice to just have your own thoughts and not have to entertain or whatever.

  2. You know, I’ll probably be dead in a small number of years (& lately it’s feeling imminent ), but I really feel like I can’t just shrug this one off, mostly because I have in my family kids under 20. And 3 are females, whose very future is now looking dangerous. A percentage of the population will not care if they actually die…. & it seems that it will depend where they choose to live. I guess they shouldn’t travel anywhere. Look, I’m rambling, but I’m honestly afraid for them. And, I’m worried for our aging population (I am for sure in this group), because it feels like the rest of you are waiting for us to shut up and just ****ing die already.

  3. I refuse to believe that oppo taco is a part of regular baseball nomenclature. I think it’s one national broadcasters pet thing.

  6. I remember when the Tigers had too many starting pitchers last spring and it took until June for bullpen days to be regular.

  7. when I've gone and done SRO and paced the concourse like a softball coach, while I watched the game I've enjoyed myself a lot. Now, going and having a chat with my dad or kids its also very nice.

  9. one thing I never do as a sports fan is "look forward to" or "would rather face" with an opponent. It never works out.

  12. I don’t know if there’s anything we can do, at least in the short term. This is the dictatorship playbook, and Americans have long been so sheltered from that, they are not even aware it exists, let alone recognize it when it’s in front of their face. But you’re right: you and I and the rest of us have no power as individuals to effect change. Our power lies in our acting as a collective. But that’s uniquely difficult to achieve in this country because American ideology elevates individualism above all else and discourages—and even occasionally criminalizes—collectives. Remember how big an insult it was meant to be by dismissing Obama as a “community organizer”? Because community is only a few letters from communism, amirite? As far as Trump being on the hook, I don’t mean prosecuting him or anything like that. I’m talking about the simple act of disavowing that he has any responsibility for words coming out under his name, if we were to learn it’s not really him doing the actual writing. But of course it is if they come out under his name, even if he never saw the words before they went out. They’re still his words, and he’s responsible for them. We can’t let him off the hook by saying he’s too stupid to think up words. That’s basically infantilizing him. By excusing him for things done in his name that people believe he’s not capable of concocting himself, we’re letting him off the hook. I’m just saying, don’t let him off the hook. He’s not just “following orders”.

  18. Same. Also, even though they're all naturalized citizens, I'm afraid that my boyfriend and many of my coworkers will get snatched and taken away by ICE. And no, I don't see this as being paranoid.

  19. Regarding Ed White. He really did say this. This photo is real. Here's a clip from the HBO Series from the Earth to the Moon. white was played by Chris Isaak.

  20. To me he talks like he's trying to be a zoomer or whatever and it gets old really quickly with me, but mostly I think he is absolutely awful when he calls games live. He has no flow to his speech, he interjects too many stupid asides about players in the middle of play (see buddha's post) and a lot of times it seems like he defaults to just saying the names of the player who has the puck without anything else so it just sounds like he's listing people off of rosters. In my mind ESPN clearly sees him as their worst PBP too because he seems to get saddled with awful broadcast partners and games. I liked him when ESPN only gave hockey a token like 8 minutes on Sportscenter with him talking because he seems genuinely passionate about it. As soon as he had to do any more he started to annoy me for whatever reason. I straight up mute broadcasts and listen to music if he's doing play by play.

  21. The 2012 Series is completely blocked from my memory like legit the only things I remember are the Sandoval home runs and unfortunately the last out of the series with Miggy left standing on the side of the road. Also not from the series per se but I remember going to the Lions game during it and sitting next to Giants fans from SF who came in for the WS and decided to catch a Lions game while here. Really nice people I have to say. Talked most of the game with them.

  22. Strong chance that even if the Tigers were to go 0 for the rest of the season the Rockies would still finish with a worse record.

  23. It's still amazing to me how many wrote him off after his 1/2 season last year. If you looked at his history, every time he was moved up, he struggled for roughly 1/2 season. Then he came around. Obviously there was no guarantee of it happening in the majors, but to completely write him off as many seemed to do didn't make any sense to me.

  24. I’m watching the parts of the game that were especially satisfying from last night and when Jack falls face forward running to first the first base umpire breaks into spontaneous laughter. It’s sort of like watching a silent movie where someone slips on the ice and everyone laughs.

  25. My son also bought tickets for Thursday to see Skubal. And he arranged a day off from work. He's pretty bummed out about Tarik not pitching but I said it's like feeding a steak to a dog, why waste Skubal against such a horrible team? 😅

  26. Not sure of the very best. One that sticks out is April 1991 Grateful Dead and Santana in Vegas at the old Silver Bowl Stadium. It was on the edge of what was the built out in the city at the time. Amazing desert mountains in the background. Worst: Anything at the Silverdome. Horrible, horrible place for live music. Lyrics were barely audible. Not even Pink Floyd or the Stones could make a great show out of it.

  27. Dingler may be the most pleasant surprise, his walk rate makes you question the offense going forward but he does make a bunch of loud contact and if he ends up being even close to what his current numbers are then we have ourselves another young position player to be excited about.

  28. The Red Sox once had a prospect Jeff Ledbetter who was supposed to develop into the next great slugger. The local media pumped him up big time. He eventually flopped and fans started calling him Bedwetter.

  29. 1943 was a weird year in America. Not quite winning the war (we were but didn't have the satisfying offensive wins to prove it) and race strife in LA and Detroit and elsewhere because of the rapid economic shifts of the war economy. As an aside, can you imagine getting up in a propeller driven aircraft with squad sized unit to fly into Nazi Germany with little fighter protection to prove a theory of strategic bombing. With a 10% chance of being shot down each mission.

  36. Cade's full season shot numbers. 35.6% from three isn't so horrible when you realize Cade only took 21 corner 3 attempts. That is the problem with handling the ball 95% of the time you are on the court. He doesn't get those easier corner attempts to boost his shooting percent.

  38. Want to give a shout out to Tork. He donated 7.5 million to build a shelter for homeless. I did some digging and it's legit. Also saw he does charity to help diabetes research. I've worked with homeless families and individuals for most of my 36 year career, so this hits home for me. You're a good man Tork! https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CBEaMiw9q/?mibextid=xfxF2i

  39. That Congressman actually used the words "expansion population." Is that what they're calling the "surplus population" nowadays? The Speaker of the House said "We find dignity in our work..." which has been phrased in the past as arbeit macht frei.
