  2. It's an indictment of Summer League that this has become the perception when a guy plays more than a game or two. The whole point is for these young players to play.

  7. That’s the thing about baseball in general, and this game in particular: I just feel so relentlessly, endlessly marketed to. I don’t feel I’m treated like a fan so much as I’m part of a target audience.

  8. I use to LOVE the all-star game but as many have said, it has lost it's luster with the amount of interleague we play now. Jonas brothers mid game song - worthless waste of time. I could not believe all that EXTRA CRAP going on as they were introducing the teams and especially the starting line ups. Total BS. Manfred should be ashamed and embarrassed.

  9. He didn't allow any runs and didn't go 0fer at the plate. So he probably had the best Tiger performance of the day.

  10. During the 70s the all-star game was as big as Christmas for me. I remember Fidrych starting the game in '76. Leflore and Staub were also in that game. I agree that interleague play has taken away a lot of its luster

  12. I used to joke about how they were going to end games with homerun derby. Now, it's actually happening. What a joke.

  17. Okay, rather than get cynical about this... Calling cancer a singular disease rather than a family of diseases rubbed me the wrong way more than the performative nature of this waste of cancer donations.

  18. My usual bicycle jaunt takes me past Fallen Timbers and past a statue of Wayne and Chief Little Turtle. The monument was placed at what was originally thought to be the battlefield. More recent combing of land and discovery of artifacts have placed the actual area of the skirmish about a half mile away. Who knows, maybe it was in both spots and/or somewhere in between?

  20. I think his performance in juniors and the evaluations by scouts had a lot more to do with Cossa getting picked than his size. I get that the end of the season and playoffs were shaky in GR...but that whole team had issues. Dating back to his run in Jrs and three pro seasons his worst save % is .911.

  22. I don’t know where to put this, but this is an active thread. I just donated $25 + $1 for a transaction fee to keep Wikipedia free and out of the hands of fascist demagogues who have contempt for the free flow of information. This is one of those days where if you go to Wikipedia, they’ll ask for a donation of any kind, and I strongly suggest that you be generous.

  23. On the MLB app they’re acting like the “swing off“ is something to be so proud of that it’s worth reliving. I’ve gone to demolition derbys but it’s not something I brag about and need to relive. Come to think of it, though, a demolition derby is better than the “swing off.” There’s a brute honesty to a demolition derby. It doesn’t pretend to be more than it is.

  26. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45750644/mlb-all-star-game-2025-swing-home-run-kyle-schwarber "The rules were simple: NL manager Dave Roberts and AL manager Aaron Boone selected three players and one alternate to take three swings. The team with the most home runs wins the game. As nice as it would have been for Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge to participate, when they made their choices in the days leading up to the game, both managers selected players they anticipated would be warm from finishing on the field: Schwarber, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez for the NL, countering Brent Rooker of the A's, Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena and Tampa Bay first baseman Jonathan Aranda." "Boone and Roberts had a finite group from which to choose. Around half the players were gone from the stadium, already headed home after a long, hot week here."

  29. Just struck me how many All-Star position players were once Cubs prospects. Eight in total and one even plays for the Cubs. Move Javy back to short and they have the field covered. Pete Crow‑Armstrong Current Cub Kyle Schwarber Willson Contreras Javier Báez Michael Busch Isaac Paredes Jorge Soler Gleyber Torres You can add McKinstry too as he once played like a minor leaguer for the Cubs.

  34. 50 years ago the final Apollo mission launched. This wasn’t a lunar mission but a diplomatic one with the Soviets. Years prior the two countries agreed to to a joint mission where the Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts would dock in earth orbit. Due to the sensitivities involved with the standard probe and drogue docking mechanism used they came up the Androgynous Peripheral Attach System (APAS) that utilized the existing docking hardware used on Apollo but attached to the adapter first. Basically the Russians and Americans didn’t want to be on the “receiving end” so to speak. It was a legit concern and threatened the idea of the mission. With this either craft could be active or passive. The US had a 3 man crew and the Soviet’s a 2 man. They were docked for over a day and visited each craft and did scientific experiments. this was the first Soviet space launch televised live. It was the last crewed capaule launch for the US until a Dragon in 2020.

  37. It looks like the players will be wearing their normal uniforms, haven't been paying attention lately so not sure if that has been the norm but definitely prefer it to the All Star jerseys.

  38. I've been wanting a top-tier NHL player and so there is no prospect in the system, Cossa or otherwise, who I consider off limits. We don't have a prospect on this team or in our system that is considered untouchable IMO. Seider and Raymond aren't prospects at this point in their careers and I'd trade a guy like Kasper if it meant we got high-level player in return. If Cossa was a piece of a trade that netted an NHL-ready player then go for it, assuming the deal isn't a gross overpay.

  39. They don't need SP at all. In the playoffs, teams usually shorten to a four man rotation. The Tigers can cover two spots in the bullpen internally. They need one or two top notch relievers. I don't think they need to add to the lineup, since they don't have anyone to take away from.
