  1. I’m not angry. I’m not fed up, but I feel worn out. There are, honestly, greater things going on in this world than the fate of a ball club can make up for. To paraphrase Bogart‘s character from Casablanca: "Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of a baseball team doesn’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.” I’m glad for the good that the team gave me this year regardless of how things turn out and I’m glad for the camaraderie we have here. And I guess that’s enough payback to make up for this hill of beans of a crazy world we live in.

  10. I joked about that early in the season. The team has no personality. The look like a white suburban middle class travel team. I don't think that is why they are losing, but it makes for less entertainment.

  11. We were in first place or in contention for it ALL YEAR and our farm system was stellar. That is a bloody good season at the Macro level. It's the Sopranos with a ****ty ending but we WILL be back next year provided Harris makes some solid moves. I think he will.

  12. If you have a torrid summer fling with a hot co-ed but you broke up after Labor Day, 10 years later will you be able to put the ending out of your head and just remember the good times? Probably if it was an amicable breakup, like if the Tigers lost a pennant race that was close and hard fought the whole way. But this collapse is the equivalent of not only her breaking up with you, but doing so after cheating on you with some loser dude. Hard to erase and move past that.

  13. so here is a thesis. The Tigers over-emphasize hitting mistakes. Makes them overly vulnerable to when a team pitches well and doesn't make many. IIRC this was Tork's whole problem last year - he had to go back to Toledo to basically learn to cover more of the plate. But where did he develop that habit of being too selective in the 1st place - the Tiger org. And in fact early in his career Hinch always stressed Tork had to "find pitches he could drive". OK that's true as far as it goes, you do have to hit the mistakes. But what do you do when the mistakes are not there in quantity? Is the Tiger hitting philosophy flexible enough to produce hitters that are competitive against good pitching and don't just beat up on the bad? "Command the zone" is a two way street for hitters. You have to let the balls go, but you also have to put strikes in play - at least after strike one, even if they don't happen to be HR potential level mistakes.

  14. Sure because I am in a position to actually make trades for the Tigers. I can throw out silly trades just like anyone but I have no idea what another team would accept in a trade So because I don't come out with some far-fetched fantasy baseball type of trade, Harris must be amazing? I'm not a mlb GM. It's not my job to sit and study other team's rosters and call other teams up to find out about their players. I have no idea what it would have taken to get some players via trade. But Harris ended up with a guy who had been washed up for 3 years and a guy who had basically a 5.00 era for the last 6 years. I have no idea how even the most devoted Harris slappies could even defend those deals All I know the Tigers went into the season with Trey Sweeney and Jace Jung as the SS-3rd base combo. Two guys that were obviously not mlb caliber players. It almost seems like Harris doesn't care about the mlb team because his guys are all in A ball and AA and if the Tigers fail, he'll just say it wasn't his fault because those aren't his guys.

  20. Maybe if the party stopped relying on or hoping for a" savior" with a plan they act like a left of center Heritage Foundation, basically a think tank, to formulate a blueprint for all candidates to run on. The problem is that getting Democrats to agree on anything is like trying to heard a Cub Scout Pack after they've had their snacks

  21. So Cleveland doesn’t do visiting teams the courtesy of an afternoon game on a travel day, unlike the Tigers, who seem to extend this courtesy to everyone. I would just like to get the suffering over early so I can find something else to worry about this evening.

  23. I’ve been thinking along those lines myself the past day or two. This is really doing a bigger number on my baseball psyche than I imagined it would. It’s even making it harder for me to watch baseball games involving other teams, which I normally enjoy, because doing so just makes me think of The Collapse. (Yes, I am conferring that official name onto it. No need to add the team name or year to it. We will always know what it refers to, and when it happened.) The biggest problem for me as far as The Collapse is concerned is that I am going to be hearing about it constantly for the next year, and then hearing about it occasionally for the rest of my life. This has been so monumental a collapse that it’s almost as though 2024 never even happened.

  26. I’s true: networks have the upper hand here, and they should take advantage of that. In big markets, there are enough independents they can strike affiliate deals with, like WDAL in DC or KWDK in Seattle or KPDX in Portland to shake off pesky affiliate groups and get clearance for their shows. In small markets, they can strike deals with other stations to run on their dot-two channels to get clearance. Affiliate groups on the other hand won't make as much money airing Golden Girls reruns, so it ends up hurting them more. I think I'd like to see networks flex their muscle in this case.

  27. Hence us last year. As a human being, I never want to see anybody get hurt although after what we went through last year my sympathy is almost null. I am going to the Cincy game and I have mixed feelings about Burrow being hurt. On one hand, I am really bummed because when you go to games you kind of want to see all the stars on the other side. On the other hand it makes winning that game a lot more easy. No one wants to pay a lot of money and go to game your team loses
