  1. In the group chat at work, I asked which halftime show everyone watched. Now I know who is MAGA on the team.

  6. I would have had no problem seeing Cabrera do those 7 years with another team. Like Chas said, one awful year is OK, but 7 is way too much. I loved to watch his great years. He was the best Tigers hitter of my lifetime, but I really wasn't all that attached to him. It wasn't like he was a lifetime Tiger like Kaline or Whitaker or Trammell. In fact, he won his only World Series on another team. His off-field activities were not very endearing either.

  7. I was hoping to hear some classical music at yesterday's Super Bowl halftime show.

  8. one problem for older people is that we keep expecting 'music'. There is a lot of audio art out there these days and that is what is dominating the entertainment market, but to take up the old man yelling at cloud mantle, it's not music by any conventional definition. To say that is not to say what is being presented isn't or can't be entertaining but it won't be if you can't get past the expectation that it will be music, because it isn't. It's something else - it's fundamentally a different set of aural forms with totally different skill sets needed to create them. It borrows rhythm and voice from music, but the rhythm is not in service of theme and the voices does not sing (mostly) and on that basis the industry continues to tell us it's music and market it through music distribution channels because that what already exists for distribution of recorded sound - (and some artists do cross over/blend the genera) If you drop the expectation and take it on it's own terms for what it is rather than your expectation of a 'musical' show, you won't be bothered that there is no legacy to western Canon (e,g. Bach) which did remain solidly there even in the adjacently previous genres of Jazz and Rock and Roll.

  9. Trump tried to buy teams in the NFL for 35 years and was rejected every time and of course he always had a lame excuse. He tried to buy the Colts in 1981 and the was turned down. Then he claimed he never made an offer. Then he bought a team in the USFL and tried to merge the league into the USFL. He bragged to Rozelle how great he'd be for the NFL. The NFL was not interested. He claimed that Rozelle had offered him a franchise. The USFL, led by Trump sued the NFL. He tried to buy the Patriots in the late 80s. Again he was rejected and he claimed it was because he didn't want to take on the owners debt. He tried to buy the Bills in 2014 and was rejected him because he was too disruptive. He claimed he never wanted to buy the Bills and only bid on them because he wanted them to stay in Buffalo. The NFL is apparently smarter than the rest of America.

  12. After the abomination that was the final season of Game of Thrones, I thought I’d sworn off any future GOT spinoffs. Eventually I caved and tried House of the Dragon but did not find it compelling. However, the new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is terrific. It’s a smaller scale story, with episodes lasting only 30 minutes, but it’s a moving story with some compelling characters and a lot of humor as well.

  14. I have a hard time seeing either political party actually dying for the same reasons I have a hard time seeing either the Big Ten or SEC ever dying. That's where the money and infrastructure is, so that's where the money will always flow. As long as there is no reason for the party system (conference system) to commit suicide, it'll kick around. Back to politics, if a powerful player is going to tip the apple cart like Trump did, or like Bernie tried to do, it's going to have to go through that structure, even if that structure becomes rather toothless in the grand scheme of electing a name.

  16. It cuts both ways though. The Dems (or rather, all voters with sanity) need to unite, yes. But Rs still need to figure out a path without DJT. Is that Vance? Don Jr.? Rubio? It's not as if the GOP is innately well run right now so as to anoint a successor. DJT will throw any successor under the bus in a heartbeat if he dares question a move he's made (or video he's posted) in the last 12 years. Trump doesn't actually care what becomes of the country when he's dead and gone, he just cares about his "legacy" (which is why we see his name getting thrown on **** indiscriminately). So in 2028 (or even in the primaries if they dare to have genuine open primaries), Vance (or the GOP field) will have to pretend like DJT is beyond reproach (lest DJT cut them off at the knees with his base), while not being the actual cult leader who has defied all historical odds to become the rapist/racist/pedophile in chief. And if it doesn't work, and Newsome/AOC/Shapiro/Beshear wins in 2028, all bets will be off in the GOP. It will be chaos as they try to fracture into either (a) trying to replicate Trump with a Dr. Oz / Vince McMahon / Trump Jr. figure, or (b) making a half-hearted return to conservatism with a Rubio / DeSantis figure. That all said, the path forward isn't crystal clear for the GOP either. Of course, they do have going for them that their party has managed to unite behind a person as horrific as Trump. While everyone on the sane side gets their knickers in a knot over Clinton/Biden/Harris not being their perfect candidate.

  18. Al Avila was as good a talent evaluator as the next guy, but he was peter-principled into the GM job which requires a plethora of skills he simply did not have, and the organization was set back close to a decade because of his seven-year tenure.

  22. It made for good background noise. It's probably best I'm not back at work until Tuesday since I'm kind of glad the Seahawks won. The game itself was far from the best one I've ever seen.

  24. My taste in music leans closer to Brandi Carlisle and classic rock as well as Americana music. I will say up front I've never been a Kid Rock fan, or heavy metal, the closest was probably fascination with The Steve Miller Band. I'm an old fart. That said I found the music and production from last night's Half Time Show to be a very joyous celebration. The production aspect was excellent, even more so after reading Wired's report about how the managed to get everything he wanted accomplished in the time restrictions and the confines of the NFL guidelines because the field had real grass. I don't care if I couldn't understand the lyrics. To those who complain go to the opera sometime, try an evening at your symphony or a community band. You just might learn something by expanding your horizons. Edit, link to Wired piece https://www.wired.com/video/watch/untold-story-bad-bunny-historic-super-bowl-halftime-show

  26. The recent Evan Petzold pod with Al Avila was excellent. Definitely put things in perspective—25 out of the 40-man are Avila players and he was candid about what went right and what didn’t. Even Chas’ cold, stony heart would be warmed a bit after a listen.

  27. The one I'm seeing people talk about today is the commercial for the Ring Doorball Cam. If you lose your dog/pet, upload a picture of it in the app, then it scans all of your neighbors Ring Cams looking for your dog. I'm sure you have to opt in to let them use your camera, but **** that.

  28. I think it's a combination of "it's a tourist thing, and we ate there when I was young..." I agree, neither of the above is my must go to's. Then again I've been there, done that, bought the Xmas ornament, Much like places here that get a lot of social media recommendations. They are OK, not great. I include the Colonial Williamsburg Taverns as well as the hotel, The taverns (Kings Arms and Christiana Campbells) are for the novelty, the food is good but not great. The couple of times we've dined at the Hotel, I found the food to be mediocre, but it's also buffet style. There are several places nearby that I prefer.
