Great tweet today that I read. Ted Turner spent 20 years making it easy for a kid in Montana could watch the Braves. MLB has spent 20 years making it harder for a kid in Atlanta to watch the Braves.6 points

Which is why for at at least the past 50 years the winner take all distribution of the Electoral College needs to change. I’m all for proportional splits. TBH I haven’t done the math, but I think it’s more fair2 points

Similar optimism on Skubal in Will Carroll's paywalled newsletter this morning. Still a lot to know going forward, and he gives a lot more detail why, but his conclusion was similar to Boras's. Could start throwing soon... And yes, if it is paywalled, I don't copy and paste. Just giving the highlights.2 points

He is thisclose to dropping an n-bomb in public, after which there will be a pearl-clutching debate about it on mainstream news networks, jokes will be made about it on late night shows, and while everyone's paying all their attention to that, more cabinet departments will be further decimated and underreported on. Rinse and repeat.2 points

I think this makes following the game as a sort of athletic ballet more enjoyable, since every play is a move that makes up the entire dance, and whether your team or the other team is making that great play, you can appreciate and enjoy it either way as part of the greater performance. That doesn't mean you can't be disappointed if your team loses—after all, you do have an established preference—but it's better if it's just a momentary bummer you're over as soon as you leave the ballpark than if you're stewing on the injustice of it all for the whole next day or even longer.2 points

Maybe this is wrong but the comfort I take in the team not playing great is that most of my baseball fan experience is at the games themselves. I don't like empty stadiums but packed stadiums annoy me. I enjoy being at the ballpark. My seats are easy to get to. The bathroom is 30 feet away. I can see the entire field. I'm outside. It's great. When the team is in contention the stress level goes up because I actually care if they win or lose.2 points

Indeed it is! I saw an article in which Ernie Harrell was asked how he as a broadcaster can stay engaged while calling games when not only a team’s chances to win the division was loooooong gone, but they were mired firmly in last place, and he replied that you simply have to look at each game as a discrete event, one that’s the most important thing in the world right now, and you treat it as that in the moment. That makes so much sense to me, and remembering that helps keep me engaged with the team when things are going rough overall.2 points

LOL dumbasses. Reminds me of borrowing money from China to pay soybean farmers to not sell to China, per slumps first reign Imagine bragging about voting for this garbage juice2 points

Well, yeah, it's not as though they're interested in freedom and liberty for literally everyone, right? That has never been how conservatism works. That's always been a liberal idea.1 point

Hillary lost while getting 3 million more votes than Trump. The reason she lost is because of razor thin margins in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Prior to the election, bitter Bernie bros were all over the internet telling us how they were going to vote third party and that's exactly what they did. Take a few minutes to look at the historic rise in third party votes along with the margin of victory in those states and it becomes clear exactly who is to blame for Trump getting elected.1 point

Oh god, please let this be true. 1 big thing: Gen Z leads social media exodus Some Gen Zers — ages 14 to 29 — are ditching social media in pursuit of better mental health, Axios' Rebecca Falconer reports. It's part of a wider digital detox movement away from screens and toward analog options. Research suggests that social media use is waning — and that more people are embracing app-blocking products and "dumbphones" that lack social media apps. 📵 Chris Wells, a self-described former "Twitter and Instagram junkie," tells Axios that he's "99% off" social media after doing a "Month Offline" challenge. The 26-year-old says: "I didn't know who I was without my social media accounts, and when I quit, it was pretty miraculous." "The one thing that really came back to me was a sense of privacy. I hadn't really felt that since I was a kid." 🗑️ 17-year-old Aditi Ediga deleted her phone's social media apps last fall. Ediga says: "One reason why teenagers don't want to delete apps and stop using them is that they're scared they're going to miss out on stuff, and then I realized I wasn't really missing out on anything." 🤝 NYU social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, author of a bestselling book on the effects of childhood tech use, tells Axios: "What you're seeing now, especially among Gen Z, is a self-correction back toward real-world connection." "They've felt the costs of isolation and are rediscovering what actually leads to flourishing." 🤳 Yes, but: Plenty of young Americans are still spending countless hours on social media, with platforms facing calls to ban or restrict teen access. Trump definitely would have won, because he definitely would have run again and Hillary would have taken the blame for the virus.1 point

Get over it. She lost an election which should have been an easy victory. She campaigned poorly. Her fault.1 point

I think they could have won it all. The went 15 innings in the deciding game. The team that beat them went 7-games in the next series losing the final game by one-run. The team that beat that team went 7 games in the WS losing the final game in 11 innings. But I do agree that most of us don't get as worked up about about games as we get older. We realize that these games are just entertainment and that the experience of enjoying the games is more important than the result.1 point

I agree that getting older has a lot to do with it. The closer you get to the 18th hole, the less stupid **** matters.1 point

I think for me it's also part of growing older... I don't know. I just don't get worked up anymore. The 2013 ALCS might have burned me out. Last year's ALDS and the year before was fun, but when they lost that game, I went right to bed. It'll be what it'll be is what I told myself. Maybe its because I figured they couldn't win it all anyway so just get it over with?1 point

Doesn't mean it's wrong. I also don't see the business advantage of outrageously lying about it. What's in it for Boras to do so? Skubal gets back when he gets back whether it's four weeks, eight weeks, twelve weeks, or 2027.1 point

It's not necessarily required that you follow in that way every game of a bad team's season, but only that, when you do commit to watching a game, treat it as an important discrete event in that moment, versus ruing that it means nothing in the big picture. Keeping that in mind helps me enjoy the game in those circumstances.1 point

this is now fully baked into just about every level of government and also into most people's personal morality: Democrats must always follow the rules (of law, of decorum, of tradition, of stare decisis) MAGA cannot be held to any standard (we will do what we want, whenever we want, don't even question us)1 point

Appeals Court rules against Trumps 10% replacement tariff. Admin is conflicted because if it appeals to Scotus for expedited hearing and loses there it has to start paying them back along with the others that were already ruled illegal. 🎻🎻🎻 https://www.nytimes.com/live/2026/05/07/us/trump-news1 point

Russini is now un hireable as a journalist. The real issue that the NFL needs to address is how Vrabel may have been using his relationship with her to manipulate the free agent market. If this is proven to have happened, he may be terminated andnever coach in the NFL again.1 point
