pitching has changed so much over the last 40 years with advances in medical knowledge and training. I'd rather they focus on their mechanics and staying healthy rather than worrying about swinging a bat.3 points

Yeah, this is what I don't like about the DH. I like it when teams are forced to decide whether to play the slugging outfielder who can't field at all versus the weak hitting gold glove caliber defender. That is more interesting to me than having the no defense slugger just bat the entire game.2 points

The '68 Tigers had a big competitive advantage in Gates Brown, who provided so many exciting moments. In today's game he doesn't exist. Without the DH, the 4th outfielder gets to come off the bench just about every game, and teams discover value in guys like Rob Fick and Eric Munson who aren't good enough to start. And it means that you have to gamble and put a big ox like Greg Luzinski in left field just to get his bat in the lineup. Baseball is played by baseball players, all of whom hit and all of whom play a defensive position.2 points

MichCard, really sorry to hear. Charlie looks like a fun dog! I employ getting another dog as a grieving strategy. It works well for me. When I lost my first dog a colleague gave me a book that was written from your dogs perspective and it was that he/she would want you to take care of and enjoy another dog. We are on our 4th rescue dog. Dogs are the absolute best.2 points

Look, Matthew Stafford just doesn't win big games. He's great at padding his stats against bad teams or when they are way behind against good teams. How many games has he won when it matters? How many good defenses has beaten?2 points

My bad, I wasn’t explicit enough. I was too worried thinking about how somebody can survive on an MLB wage whilst typing and got distracted. Let’s be clear on something here. This isn’t a typical union vs management CBA negotiation. It’s nothing at all like that. Biases regarding a situation were $25/hour jobs simply do not parallel to where top earners make $25M/year. They’re playing with silly gobs of money in the middle of an expletive pandemic with inflation at ridiculous heights. Both sides are at fault. Both sides are culpable for the delay. To blindly side with one side over the other in this matter is flat out asinine.2 points

So sorry, MC. 😢. It is always hard when they are gone, but I can’t imagine how hard it must be to lose your buddy that way. These are my two currently, Lucy (dog) is just about 14 yrs old… Adopted her when she was one year old. Sam the cat, is maybe a year older (or younger… no one’s sure). I got him seven years ago. My good friend got Sam from a shelter for her mom to keep as company, but couldn’t keep him her self when the mom passed away because her dog didn’t like cats. Lucy on the other hand, is fine with cats, but isn’t crazy about other dogs. Go figure. I know it’s gonna be tough in a couple of years with the two of them, but there is no better company than our pets. Again … so sorry for your loss.2 points

This is my buddy, Jungle Jack. He's definitely getting on in years—best guess is 18-19—but he's still doing fine for his age. Chronic kidney failure, chronic asthma, and not really anything else wrong with him. He's the sweetest, cuddliest, snuggliest, friendliest cat I've ever met. I don't know what I'll do when he's gone, but it seems at present that it'll be a while (a year or so?) before I have to worry about that.2 points

I’m not much of a thread starter, but I’m mourning the loss of my boy tonight and didn’t have much else to do. Thought I’d start something in his memory. Charlie was hit by an SUV on Rochester Road this afternoon after he got loose of the leash while my foster son was walking him. I was at work. He helped me out of many a dark place this past summer. I’m doing better now, but I’m going to miss him like crazy. Figure this can be a place to talk about all our doggos and pets and how much they mean to us.1 point

Frankly, as a ticket holder, I pretty much write off early April games. It's cold. They moved the times up to 6:40. It might snow. There's hardly anyone there so the atmosphere is dead. Even on nice days you get that thing where you feel fine in a light jacket when you leave but by 8:30 when the sun sets you need a hat and gloves. I'm turning into an old man where I ask "Why am I sitting here freezing my ass off when I could be home?" You could say the same for the last 2 weeks of September, outside of playoff chases. I don't like extreme weather games. Opening Day is fun because it's all new but I'm done with the party atmosphere. Nothing cool about watching a lady sit on a curb crying because she's drunk and can't find her friends or listening to a bunch of frat bros swearing. Also in terms of overall sports appeal in April don't you have the NBA and NHL Playoffs in full swing? So is it worth it to the league to fund those games? Jeez..... don't let Manfred read this.1 point

Newman was awesome in all phases....very thoughtful/ecclectic and warm. Would love to see that kind of radio host again somewhere.1 point

Man... David Newman was so so good... he would speak off the cuff in a way that would take us a few days to write ourselves. So intelligent. I loved his movie quizzes. He was the very best of talk radio.1 point

I think that the comments about Ben Johnson are great, until or unless he gets Lionized. I don't know that Zac Taylor is familiar with the process of Lionization, so I'll forgive him. Seriously, that's great praise to get from the Super Bowl runner-up coach in Taylor. I hope we got a good one here with Ben Johnson as our OC.1 point

I would be a hard pass on Harris for that price but a definite yes on that price for Walker.1 point

So to clarify my nephew (AB Ranger) is NOT in Ukraine. My sister misunderstood him. He is at the border of Moldova in Colosova. They are processing people fleeing Ukraine.1 point

The DH thing should have been settled a while ago. Its just not practical to ask Ps to hit in the majors when they don't do it in the minors.1 point

This is the sort of thing you had to expect. RT (note, the channel on your DirectV thanks to AT&T being oligarch friendly) is whipping up the home crowds.1 point

Matthew Stafford has more Super Bowls rings than Connor Cook.1 point

We have so much money tied up in Stafford when teams like the Rams are going to the Super Bowl with QBs like Jared Goff. We need to draft a new QB like Goff who is on a rookie contract. Yeah he'll eventually need to get paid, but how many division titles has Stafford won?1 point

Awesome feeling.....the closest that Lions fans have or are likely to ever come to Super Bowl glory. Congratulations Matt Stafford!1 point

Matthew Stafford has as many Super Bowl rings as Aaron Rodgers.1 point

I’m so happy for Stafford. This is what happens when a franchise player gets away from the SOL.1 point

I'll just say it, congratulations Matt Stafford on winning a Super Bowl. A well deserved and earned honor, but I'll be the first to say I never thought you'd be able to deliver.1 point

unusual considering the man can barely afford groceries on his tiny salary.1 point
-
the other thing is that it's not only the owners vs the players, but it's the fans vs the players, because every additional dollar spent on player compensation ultimately comes from the fans. It's easy to sit here and say the owners should up the cap because they can afford it, but that's not how it works. The owners are just the pass through, all the money that goes to the players ultimately comes from the fans because no franchise ever operated at a long term net loss.1 point

i know that when i go to a baseball game and think about how hard it is for issac paredes to survive on $630,000 a year, it just breaks my heart. hopefully mlb helps him with his rent and gives him an extra stipend for food to supplement his need for wic money. we should set up a go fund me page for him to help him clothe his children during such troubling times. its the least an ethical fan can do.1 point
-
The owners might go for that, but the players goal is to get as much as possible, so that maintains the divide between them.1 point

carlos monnarez has taken up the drew sharpe mantle of being the guy who must be a contrarian and bag on all the home teams no matter what. and he said for years that stafford was a loser and the lions needed to get rid of him. monnarez is terrible.1 point
