  2. Like everything else in the 50's the bad news was suppressed. Under the 'covers' so to speak, I would posit that the most traumatic thing about the 50's for even the supposedly favored white society was probably the skyrocketing divorce rate. Traumatic because no-one had experience in how that was supposed to work, so divorces were messier, more angry, more guilt ridden, more tied up in courts, and the fallout for children far worse than today when people have learned to accept that it's OK for a relationship to fail and that families can be 'blended' and all the other social coping strategies that have emerged. For me the essential truth about the 50's was that our parents generation basically got to the end of WWII with a massive case of cultural PTSD. They had been through depression and war and they were simply done wanting to be engaged in *anything* that upset any one's apple cart. So things got very rigid and ossified, but in a very quiet, suppressed, individual by individual kind of way - and that is what set the stage for the great conflict with their children, who couldn't understand why their parents were so deliberately blind to so much starting to go wrong around them.

  4. With the amount of muscle Victor Reyes has supposedly added each of the last 3 off-seasons he should be looking like the Incredible Hulk by now. I swear each year they have said he added 20-25 lbs.

  5. Kinda crazy how Michigan's men's team is facing a 2 seed Villanova team as an 11 seed meanwhile the women are facing an 11 seed Villanova team as a 3 seed. It was almost a complete reciprocate of each other.

  8. I strongly recommend everyone read David Halberstam's book The Fifties. He goes into great detail explaining that while great for some people, for many others it wasn't. Women could get fired for being pregnant. Blacks were still being lynched. They couldn't go to good schools. Housewives in families who moved into the suburbs were trapped in a cycle with no support and were often very depressed. The church and other religious fanatics were fighting the development of The Pill. It goes on and on. If you were a white male the 50's were great. Everyone else? Not so much. But that explains the lure for some people.

  9. No, the outrage is real. It violates the first rule of the white frat boy privilege social compact to actually be held to account for an evening when you intentionally got liquored up just so you you could act irresponsibly. Nothing more unfair than to pull the rug out from under that pillar of Ivy League institutionalism. Simply too cruel. (...oh, you mean the outrage on the *other* side?) Whether it was legally rape or not is probably lost in the fog of decades old drunkenness, but I'm not sure that was ever the real point.

  10. bingo. He's been an all upper body swinger. If I were his coach I'd make him play a couple of months with a 36 oz (or more if you could find one) bat so he'd have to learn to put his body into it.

  12. What went down? Cases still going up in quite a few EU countries. But I’m not worried. Saw an analysis that our omicron was different than theirs and having gone they thru that plus our vax rates and immunity will not cause a surge. We might get a wave at some point but nobody suggests we are in for more trouble. Our wastewater suggests that variant is already here.

  13. News flash...I said unions WERE labor organizations. Sure they dabbled in politics but it wasn't their primary function. That all changed 10 to 20 years ago. Many, or I should say the ones I'm familiar with in Michigan are political organization first. In 2016 most unions backed Hilary while the majority of their membership supported Trump. That didn't do anything to help their support from within. UAW President Bob King is responsible for Michigan being a right to work state. He thought he was bigger than Gov. Snyder and lost the war. King was behind Mi. Prop 2. Snyder asked him to drop it and he wouldn't go for RTW. King wouldn't, Prop 2 was overwhelmingly turned down so Snyder enacted RTW.

  14. i'm pretty sure both parties will do anything to stay in power. republicans complaining about the democrats' tactics at the last confirmation is just silly politics. republicans do the same thing. hawley tried to trash kentaji brown for being "soft on criminals" as a judge for her sentences regarding sex offenders then legal twitter did its thing and showed that gorsuch and roberts had both ruled similarly to her in a supreme court case. so stfu hawley.

  18. Listen, you don’t have to go back to the 50s or even the 60s or 70s to find what work was like for women. In the early 80s when I questioned how one person in my group was promoted before I was, the answer my manager gave me was “well …. he has a family.” I’m serious.. He said this to my face. Not that I wasn’t justified not that I wasn’t qualified not that I didn’t deserve it, but because he had a family.

  22. I did have a nice comeback on TQQQ, though. Bought it Tuesday when it butted up against support, sold it Friday after it rose to butt up against the 50-day line. This might be one of those rare chart-based wins.

  23. Pretending Trump was concerned only for the American people is so precious. Fact is, Trump wants as close to a lawless frontier as he can manage, because his style of business wins in that environment.

  24. How were the 1950's a much better era? White people literally got offended by blacks drinking from the same water fountain or eating from the same lunch counter or going to the same schools as they did or riding on the same bus or whistling at white women or dating white women or marrying white women or holding the same jobs as they did or using the same public libraries or swimming in the same public pools or moving into their neighborhoods or voting or registering to vote. Not to mention lynching's, fire bombing black churches, murdering black children for allegedly looking at a white girl . . . But boy the way Glenn Miller played!

  25. I'd put it the other way. In the 50's no one was allowed to be offensive, thus it was much easier not to be offended.

  33. Max Boot said on Maher that if Trump were president, Putin would not have had to invade Ukraine because Trump was a fifth column in the White House undermining America from within. Trump would have pulled us out of NATO, and with us off the table, it would have been a lot easier for Russia to just pressure their way in a la Crimea. It’s really because of Biden that Zelenskyy is emboldened in the fight. Without the US, Ukraine would have been cooked by now.

  36. My daughter's 4th bday party was today and being an only child and only grandchild in the case of her Mom's parents she naturally got a ton of gifts but the one that she was most interested in was the little golf set I got her. Being an avid golfer of 30 plus years it was my hope that one day she would pick up the game and play with me so seeing that brought a smile to my face.
