I belong to a couple of baseball facebook pages that is full of old timers who resent the modern game and this is the knid of thing that makes them go ape shit. I love it for that alone.3 points

and the critics act like they won't do it anyway. "Biden can't do it because then DeSantis will do it" Fuck that. DeSantis is going to do it regardless of what Biden does. The GOP has already shown that they invent standards. We can't bring our knife because then they'll bring their gun when they've already got the gun. We'll have a court backing up tyranny and hate but at least we have "integrity in the institution" or some other bullshit. The trans people will take comfort in that.3 points

That Gaetz/Austin exchange shows the best and worst of our country. The best is that we have civilian control of the military member of our legislature can talk to a top military guy that way and not be punished. The worst is that a guy like Gaetz is a member of our legislature.3 points

Why not? We subtract them now when one side gets a majority. So why not add? What's the difference? I don't know the answer to that and don't need to know the answer. We don't make decisions based on extreme examples. It's not prescribed in the constitution so it's up to the people to decide I guess. Maybe the answer is recess appointments when a vacancy opens up due to death so that the games played by The Majority Leader have less of an impact.2 points

That's it, I'm done until next year. I don't care if Avila trades for Corbin Burnes or Tyler O'Neill, I'm not doing another prediction this year. I'm also glad I don't have to do a prediction for Shohei Ohtani. Although on second thought, that one might actually be fun. See ya next year.1 point

The tip portion gets added later, but for some reason doesn't generate a new "alert". My statement always ends up showing the full amount including tip once the charge actually hits. It's similar to when a gas station does an initial "hold" of $100 when you swipe your card, and then the actual amount posts later.1 point

i aasume the peojections have greene doing about the same as most young rookies do, badly. same with tork but maybe to a lesser degree. they dont like mize because he doesnt miss bats. manning has no real track record. they probably like skubal more. to me, .500 would be a success. all i want is to watch the kids play and hope they do well.1 point

I keep saying this, but there's gonna be a price associated with theoretically "letting it go" or "getting back to normal" particularly with the Eastern Europe/old Warsaw Pact states. And seemingly, though cold comfort for Zelensky and the Ukrainians who would like to see more, every day we see new signs of Europe/US going further than anyone ever expected on this problem. That could be seen, for instance, in Germany's President coming out and issuing a public apology for engaging in Nord Stream 2 with the Russians, for instance.... that was unthinkable 45 days ago. I don't see a way that the genie goes back into the bottle on this stuff... it's just a different world now.1 point

I've mentioned this before, maybe just a few weeks ago: I have seen where when I try to tip through my credit card, either for a carryout or sitting down at a restaurant, they ring me up for the bill amount but not the tip. Example: I get a bill for, let's say, $79.55; I write up a tip on the sheet of $15 for a total of $94.55, they ring up my card for just the $79.55. I started noticing this when I set up text alerts for all my credit card charges. I felt a little bad when this happened in a restaurant; for the carryout I just shrug and say oh well. One thing I have been doing more in restaurants is tipping cash even when I pay with a card. I get the bill for $79.55; I leave a ten and a five in the folder with the signed bill; on the tip line I write "CASH". The way I figure it is, here's the cash, the tax situation is between the staff, their god, and their Turbotax.1 point

If find it funny how people expect them to lose more games than last year. They started a pathetic 9-24 last year and then went 68-61 the rest of the way. Isn't it evident that once AJ & Co. got to know the team a little better that they had a major positive influence? That team had Niko Goodrum as the starting SS. They had Grayson Greiner & a washed up Wilson Ramos behind the plate. They had Nomar Mazara as a starting OF. They had JaCoby Jones as the starting CF. Yet, once they figured out those guys weren't going to cut it, they moved on - quickly (and somewhat ruthlessly) and wouldn't ya know, they weren't that bad after all and between the end of last year and beginning of this year the team has upgraded SS, by a Grand Canyon-like margin, upgraded the catching position, by a wide margin, have added a legit starting pitcher, gotten more experience for young starters who adjusted during the season and showed why they were high prospects, and have an aging veteran finally acting like a leader, setting his ego aside. I don't expect everything to be sunshine & roses for Torkleson and Greene, but wow, the upgrades even after the positive changes made last May would indicate that this team finishes with at least the same number of wins as last year. Maybe people believe it was a fluke, but it didn't seem very flukey. Their coaching staff made a big difference (in my opinion). I don't expect them to make the playoffs this year, but I do expect them to get to .500. No way they have a 9-24 start or 9-24 stretch this season and that 68-61 pace would have given them an 85 win season over 162 last year. I expect about 81-85 wins this year. I don't think this team really peaks for a couple more years when Tork and Greene have taken their lumps and learned the game. Let them use this as a chip on their shoulder.1 point

There is a certain irony in that being strongly ideological is sort of by definition a bad thing in a judge if you subscribe to a classical view of conservatism. Anyone who comes to a court with a particular legal ideology to push violates the very first principle of anything you can honesty call conservative jurisprudence. These people (Bork, Scalia, Thomas, Alito to highlight a few) haven't been 'conservative'; they are all ideo-warriors, and since Goldwater have mostly really just been right wingers, not conservatives. American right wingers cloak themselves in the historical patina of a classic intellectual movement with a certain level of virtue that is actually at this point completely absent from their movement, which is now more about protection of privilege and entrenched economic interests and the use of white nationalism and culture war agitprop to co-opt enough lower socio-economic class members at the ballot box to maintain their power to maintain those protections in a nominally democratic system. The newest twist being that faced with incipient failure of that enterprise, they are now ready to simply jettison the remaining trappings of democracy as well.1 point

OKC came back from 18 down midway through the 4th I believe with one of the worst lineups I've ever seen an NBA team put on the court. Hell, I don't even think that team would make the playoffs in the G League.1 point

By the way, at the Mud Hens game there were two things I instantly noticed. The bases are bigger and it seems like a lot bigger. Extremely noticeable and I really did notice that 2nd base is moved closer to the plate. It looks strange, it's not centered. And that came in handy today. Kody Clemens was on first when Daz Cameron hit one to the wall and he scored at the plate on a very very close play (snuck his hand under the catcher's glove........if the base was in the former position, he's out.1 point

As well as Clemens hit the ball, how about the Mud Hen pitchers? 6 Ps combined on a 2 H, 3 BB, 16 SO shutout. Not a bad way to open the season.1 point

Yeah.. exactly. To your point: I think if any one of us came on yesterday and said, "Hey, we should trade Paredes for Austin Meadows!!!"... Said person would have been nearly laughed off the board...1 point

If you had asked me yesterday what Paredes' trade value was, I would have said "bag of baseballs".1 point

This is bullshit. Agree. Traveling down and making lodging accommodations and every other consideration is a time consuming exercise. How about flight plans/tickets? This will be a major pain for those that had planned to attend tomorrows game.1 point

I think it's the pitchers that need a longer spring training. I believe position players can get ready pretty quickly.1 point

I would want the max JOTSC term to be at about 20 yrs. The theory is that time scales are the best way to smooth out transient political winds. The terms in the House are short, the Exec can serve as long 4 House terms, I would want Federal judges to have pretty much that same 4 to one ratio to a presidency - which would be a minimum of 16 yrs for one presidential term. But my take on this is a little different. I don't care that Federal judges can serve a long time, what I don't like is that each party is trying to nominate younger and younger judges to get longer effective terms and I would rather see people with deeper experience get to the SCOTUS. Term limits at about 20 yrs would at least remove the motivation to keep looking at inexperienced judges.1 point

You notice it always comes down to asking the Dems not to respond in kind to make worse what the GOP has already felt free to break? Seems to be a game theory error in there somewhere.1 point

HIGHLY recommend Bosse Field in Evansville, Indiana. Triplets use to play there, A League of Their Own was filmed there and it is the third oldest park (1915) behind Fenway and Wrigley.1 point
