  1. On Diego's 11th birthday. It was the first time I had given him a haircut and we did them at home from that point forward. He hated the buzzing of the clippers but I bribed him with Cherrios. He loved Cherrios. Million-Watt Smile. In his honor, another dog is going to get a great life soon in a house that isn't right without a dog. He rescued me six weeks after the passing of my previous dog Tony and he helped me get over it. I won't wait that long this time. My dog is out there somewhere, I just have to find him now. 5,412 amazing days for 2 miserable ones. That's a good trade. R.I.P. Mighty D.

  4. Higginson used to hangout in Royal Oak alot back when I was in my 20s and would frequent the bar scene so I've talked to him a few times. I remember one time we were shooting pool with him and it was in the middle of the 06 season, me and one of my friends said something to the effect of "does it bother you that the Tigers just so happened to be good right after you leave them?" and he responded with "I made 50 million dollars off them so I can't complain." lol atleast he was honest. But what was the kicker was a little bit later he says to me and one of my friends "You guys wanna shot?" so we go up to the bar and take a shot and he proceeds to only pay for his. At the time those Miller Lite "man card" commercials were popular so my friend was like "You ask us if we wanna shot and then you don't pay for it? Your man card is revoked." He got all pissy after that.

  6. if the tigers had a 25 year old outfielder who hit 320/404/577, you'd all be going bananas right now. higgy was pretty good for a number of years for some pretty bad teams. we all remember "you try and trade em", but he was a good player for awhile.

  7. I hope so. It's a tough decision on Grossman but it's time to let him go. Baddoo and Greene are the 2 most exciting players in the organization.

  8. Although he didn't play as many games in Detroit (or stayed in Detroit) as Higginson... I think of Bobby Higginson the same way I think of Steve Kemp.

  9. 17 years after retirement, everyone who was a Tigers fan in the late 90's and early 00's loved or hated him. Probably both. I think it is time to have a retrospective visit to the one of the stars of a struggling franchise. Share your favorite Higgy memories (or the ones that made you despise him) here. From Wikipedia: Robert Leigh Higginson (born August 18, 1970) is an American former professional baseball outfielder who played his entire career for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). Higginson made his major league debut in 1995, and played 130 games for the Tigers. He batted .320 in 1996 and .300 in 2000, scored over 100 runs in 2000 and drove in over 100 runs in 1997 and 2000. His career high of 30 home-runs came also in 2000. He twice led the Majors in outfield assists, and also led all American League left fielders in putouts in 2000 (305) and 2001 (321), although he never won a Gold Glove for his fielding. He was never named to an All-Star team. On June 30 and July 1, 1997, Higginson tied a major league record by hitting four home runs in four consecutive at bats (note, there were some walks interspersed) -- three on the first day, and then another in the first inning of the second day.[2] Higginson was named "Tiger of the Year" by the Detroit chapter of the BBWAA in 1997 and 2000. Since the award's inception in 1965, ten players have been named "Tiger of the Year" on multiple occasions: Higginson, Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera, Travis Fryman, Cecil Fielder, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Kirk Gibson, Ron LeFlore, and Denny McLain.[3][4] An elbow injury limited Higginson to 10 games in 2005, which ended up being his final season. He was granted free agency on October 31, and he retired at the age of 35. He ended his career never having played on a team that had a winning season. Higginson is also known for breaking up a no-hitter in the ninth inning and two out on a game in Toronto on September 27, 1998, with a pinch-hit home run.[5] The pitcher, future Hall of Famer Roy Halladay, was making his second ever appearance, and ended up winning his first career game, 2–1.

  10. Flores and Madden seem like decent bets... with Madden, I remember one of the Pipeline guys last year on their podcast (can't remember if it was Callis or Mayo) suggesting he could be one of the earliest 2021 draft picks to make the major leagues. Nothing he has done to date suggests otherwise.

  11. It's just nice to see them score some runs, I mean nobody is going to confuse them with the 26 Yankees but as I mentioned earlier this is their 6th straight scoring 4+ runs, and it's now been 17 games since their last shutout. During that time they've only scored less than 2 runs once. Now that may not sound super impressive but there was a point in the season where they were scoring less than 2 runs at a 40% clip so to only do it once in 17 games is a huge difference.

  12. i'd be happy with savoie. honestly, given their recent track record, i'd be happy with whomever they pick because i trust them. among the realistic possibilities (assuming jarlovsky, wright, cooley, jiricik, nemec) are all gone, i want gautier, savoie, kemell, nazar. out of the box pick: lian bischell. for some reason he reminds me of seider: big, good skater, pkus defender who was said to have limited offensive ability. not necessarily at 8, but maybe later. yes, we are now loaded with those guys on defense, but maybe he's a guy we trade back into round one to get.

  15. IMO, it's really a case where, had Chris basically said that the results thus far were disappointing but we're working to correct it, it would have generated almost no news. His response generated far more and, subsequently, was quite negative.

  16. Oh, I agree. I think Skubal's good stretch elevated people's expectations of him, fairly or not, and those very high expectations are what is causing people to go ape-sheet over a string of bad starts. He has never possessed elite stuff. All three pitches (4S, Slider, Change) have to be working way above his career norms in order for him to pitch well, which is above his projections and established performance level. It seems far more likely to me that he will be a Matt Boyd type, and there's nothing wrong that. The fact that this team **needs** him to be better than Matt Boyd was is a function of how badly this team has performed at acquiring/drafting/developing talent.

  22. IIRC, the scuttlebutt at the time of the trade was that, from the Rays' perspective, Meadows was coming at a higher cost in future years and that clearing him out would create room for Josh Lowe. (Who thus far hasn't performed well at all, but that's neither here nor there) I do think that they liked Paredes, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten him in the trade. But along with all the conspiracies about how the Rays "knew" something was up with Meadows and they needed to dump him on an unsuspecting buyer, there is a lot of revisionist history about Paredes role in the trade. At the end of the day, he wasn't the straw that stirred the drink, so to speak.

  23. Tigers are 24-24 since the 9-23 start. Since then they’ve lost 2.5 games in the standings to Minnesota, lost 0.5 game in standings to Cleveland, gained 1.0 game in standings to Chicago and gained 5.5 games in standings on KC.

  24. Can’t blame Hinch here. Cleveland has given up. 19 games in 17 days. Peralta just hurt himself to go along with all of the other hurt pitchers. It’s not aesthetically pleasing, but he’s smart taking advantage of this situation.

  25. You need to see a player in the playoffs before you can really judge them. That is why it is important to make the playoffs before your young guys start to hit free agency. The playoffs are so different than the regular season, you need to see how they perform to properly judge them

  36. He touched off a firestorm on the old board by making the team in 2005 ahead of Marcus Thames, who had hit home runs in 2004 in Toledo and Detroit at ridiculous rate. Higginson had been pretty well washed up since 2003 but the scuttlebutt was that Gibson had advocated for him. It didn't matter much, he only played a handful of games in 2005 and that was the end of his career.

  37. Higginson was probably my favorite player of that awful era. I knew that he never played in the playoffs, but I guess I had forgotten that none of those squads played .500.
