  9. You can't hire a GM from another organization to be a GM unless they aren't under contract. You can hire them for a higher title. That's behind almost all title creep. Anyways, the GM of the following teams is not the top dog in baseball ops: Brewers, Guardians, Rays, Athletics, Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, Twins, Red Sox, Royals Most teams have 3-6 or so AGM's or VP's (in Baseball Ops), with some having as many as 12-15. A lot of AGM/VP's are, again, promoted to keep from being poached. Kevin Goldstein had a segment on this on his nascent podcast between his Astros and Twins job. You really like your player development director? Promote him to Assistant General Manager-Player Development, and he can't be hired as Player Development Director. Anyways, I'm not kidding when I say I deep dived the org charts of all 30 organizations last month. In general, your baseball ops org structure: President, Baseball Ops General Manager Assistant General Manager (Special Assistant is somewhere on this tier. Some are ceremonial, like Horton. Some are doing actual work, like Slater/McLeod/Goldstein) Director Assistant Director Coordinator Manager (Not like AJ Hinch manager. I'm talking in the analytics department, manager is a tier) And from here it depends on the department. There was remarkable standardization on this front. There are also several duel titles on the executive side that some baseball ops people get President Executive Vice President Vice President Did you know Al Avila was EVP? Did you know Menzin, Sartori, Chadd, Bream, and Garko are VP's?

  10. On a personal note, I sort of know Scott Harris's dad. We were on the same team at Cubs camp in 2020 (just before COVID hit), which Scott had gifted him the prior Christmas. We had a couple of conversations at length and one morning at breakfast he showed me Scott's 2016 Cubs ring, which he'd brought to camp with him. Talk about super impressive. I just dropped him a mazel tov in the email. He's probably got hundreds of people doing the same with him, so who knows if I hear back. But whether he does or doesn't, he's a really good guy, and I'm really happy for him.

  12. There was confusion as to why his team would recommend him. The only thing that made sense is he signed the FISA warrant for Carter page that later had some issues. That could mean they thought he had issues with the FBI. These people don’t recognize that perpetual grudges are not something most people carry.

  13. Chris’s comments at press conference firing Avila were the equivalent of Javy Baez facing an 0-2 slider off the plate. Harris today was Aaron Judge on a middle middle fastball in a 2-0 count.

  20. i would add deliberatley tanking towards the end of the season. i dont know how to avoid it other than tying salary to games played - which i dont think will ever happen - or having a league doctor or official clear a player to play and if he doesnt, the team is hurt somehow. be it through the loss of draft picks or salary cap space. there has to be some sort of penalty for the blatant tank jobs ok city has been doing for the last five years. i know the pistons did it too, but ok city has taken it to ridiculous levels. no other sport has the kind of tanking you see in the nba. like if the league doctor clears your player to play, if he fails to play within x amount of days you lose his salary on your cap next year. if it happens with multiple players you lose a second round pick. if it happens two years in a row you lose a first round pick. i know this isnt going to happen, but i dont see many other ways to incentivize teams to compete when they have no hope of making the playoffs.

  21. Cousins and the Vikings for that matter always seem to be one of the most jekyll and hyde teams in the NFL, theres weeks where he and them look elite and others where they look like trash, here's hoping for the latter on Sunday.

  22. I guess I just don't see the importance of the topics they're addressing. I feel like there are more important issues, like stars actually playing games. The money for all of this comes from fans and tv deals because we want to see the stars play. Tie it to their wallet and they'll play. Maybe something like making all max contracts 80% guaranteed with the other 20% directly tied to actual games played. So, if you make 30M per year, then your contract is actually 24M per year guaranteed and the other 6M is incentive pay for playing the games - roughly 73K per game. People are too quick to bring up the idea of reducing the schedule, but it won't solve it. They're trying to get a rest advantage over their competition. If the season is 56 games, they'll still rest because it's not about the number "82", it's about playing less games than your opponent. Find a way to tie it to their wallet and you'll fix the issue. There should also be escalating player salary reduction penalties and some cap relief for players that sit out due to trade demands. The power has swung too far and it's time to rebalance. Not saying players shouldn't have some power, but with 100% guaranteed contracts, the teams (and therefore the fans) are at the complete mercy of the player to honor the contract they signed or not.

  33. I am still convinced that the key to Goff's success is and will be who is in his ear. I think it's why Campbell took over play-calling last year & why they went ahead & hired Ben Johnson as the OC in the off-season. Goff is one of the many who does not respond to yelling or macho head games - Having a coaching staff in place that is not tied to scheme, but in making the best play calls and decisions for the personnel they have.

  34. I missed the game Saturday, have half of today's game saved to watch when Cossa comes in. I'm bored on a work call so I am going to do a prospect clip dump: People on hfboards are saying Kasper reminds them of Zetterberg with how he plays and I think that's a good comparison so far
