  1. When an interviewer in the 90s said his career was tragic, Fidrych corrected him and said "Tragic? I started an All-Star Game, it was great". He wasn't a phony, it wasn't an act, he was just a kid that was as wowed as we were. I still remember his first start against Cleveland and how fast the game was over. He got the ball and it was like it was giving him electric shocks and he had to get rid of it right away. I don't think he got cheated, I think the rest of us did, I think baseball did.

  2. I got his autograph at a Whitecaps game. I was absolutely thrilled and said to him "thank you for doing this" and he said "thank you for still caring". Somewhere I have a picture of me walking away from the autograph table with a huge smile on my face. It was a highlight reel moment in my life.

  3. I got Fidrych's autograph at Gibralter one year. They were free. Very long line and it wasn't moving fast. Once I got up there I realized why. The guy was so friendly and was talking to everyone like it was a cousin he hadn't seen in 7 years. This was before camera phones so I can imagine how long that would have been if everybody wanted a picture.

  6. I'm old enough to remember when people shit a brick over signing Chase Daniel now we want to draft backup QBs in the top 10 or sign high priced veteran backups for a QB who doesn't miss games. This backup QB obsession is fascinating. I think it's more that people don't like Goff but he played too well for people to just outright say they want to replace him.

  7. I don't see edge rusher as a real need although you can never have enough quality edge rushers (I have Wilson as my favorite for #6 even though he doesn't fill a big need). I think the biggest needs are a DT to team with McNeil, WR if Chark walks, long term solution at guard, long term solution at CB and linebacker obviously. However, I wouldn't say any of those are critical needs outside of LB which is a testament to how well Holmes has built this roster. It makes this draft process more fun because he could just pick talent as opposed to filling needs which leads me to believe that we might see more offense picks than people might think.

  8. Well I did it: I now own a Tele. I don’t think I’d ever find one I liked and, through a series of trades, I found one I really like and now it’s on the wall. I doubt I’ll ever use it live but it’s a fun and attractive tool in the arsenal. Road worn GC exclusive MIM. Nice chunky neck. Dude who I got it from put a hot rails in the bridge but I’m going to put it back to stock.

  9. BTW Ohtani had the single highest pitch velocity and exit velocity in the entire tournament.

  10. Ohtani strikes out Trout to give Japan the Championship. Two teammates, arguably the two most well known and best players in baseball face off for the final out. Yep couldn't have scripted it better!

  12. Manning with a move Dan hadn't seen yet during the game today. Against a batter that had already stepped out and with a runner on base, he came ready very early on the clock so he had more than 10 sec and then did an old fashioned hold for over 7 sec to freeze the runner and the batter could not take time. Clever boy.

  15. Maybe on to something. The Lions can carry three QBs on the roster. They can draft three this year with one being Hooker who they can stash on the IR and then have a rookie backup and a rookie third string.

  16. Fellas, the Lions have five picks in the top 81. Use them ALL on drafting a QB in a box. That way we can’t miss. We will fill the roles of immediate backup QB as well as developing a couple of future starters and backups who are currently injured. And this will send a message to Goff that he better not have a bad game.

  17. I don’t think anyone is suggesting that Stroud/Young/Richardson/Levis would be drafted to be a backup. They’d be drafted to be the 2024 or 2025 starter. Yes that probably means they would be a backup in 2023. But that’s what good teams do at all positions, not just QB. It can be a good thing for the first round BPA added to your team to not be a starter right away when it means you don’t have many holes. There might be a more nuanced argument to make that this is the Lions window, they should add an instant playmaker, and make a run this year at the Super Bowl. But I think the “don’t draft a backup quarterback” argument is more concerned with semantics than substantive differences of opinion.

  19. Humiliation does not = martyrdom. Humiliation makes you look bad. Ask Cersei. That's why I am pro not just handcuffs and perp, but strip him naked and waltz him up and down Broadway and 5th Avenue. I know that is fantasy, not reality. Like GOT fantasy... I'm just sayin'... The grotesquery won't be attractive to MAGA. It will be off-putting and they will run away ("not with a 10-foot pole") instead. Even if it's the handcuffs and just a normal perp... Just my 'pinion.

  20. yeah - there is a certain level of relaxation in watching a BB game that is lost since you constantly feel the time pressure on the pitcher. I think they had to do something but now that I see it in action I might have approached it differently: 1) yes make the batter step in within 8 seconds and stay in the box. Nobody gains anything watching a batter adjust velcro - that had to go. 2) give the pitcher as long as he wants but after 20 seconds the batter has to be given time by the ump IF he asks for it. Once a batter has stepped out on a pitch once, then the pitcher MUST deliver in 15 sec once the batter returns. I think once you break pitchers of the ability to take a long time on that second pitch, they will probably get out of the habit of taking a long time on the 1st one as well because they are not going to want to work at mulitple rhythms. The system ends up becoming pretty self regulating intead of clock watching based. It does shift control to the hitter - as long as he is willing to wait before stepping out there is no clock running - but that will be most of the time I think. The truth is that other than some relievers, most pitchers prefer to work on a pace - it's the batters that were screwing up the game with all the step outs and glove adjustments - so the requirement on the pitchers were probably largely misguided. There are some relievers that were terrible and the modern idea of holding a pitch forever to freeze a runner had to be stopped, but making the pitcher come home in ~15 after you've exhausted the hitter's patience once might have been enough.

  21. Wouldn't that be great if navigation took these things into consideration? "Proceed southbound on I-75. Take the next exit after the Big Butter Jesus."

  22. I can see it now. The Lions go on a miraculous run to the NFC Championship Game. With a big lead at the half, Goff slips and falls in the locker room at halftime. Nate Sudfeld comes in and immediately throws four interceptions, before Dan Campbell single handedly concusses him with a clipboard… who’s that coming into the game?? 53-year-old Mark Brunell. *cue The Longest Yard Burt Reynolds tossing aside the hat and putting on the helmet, “I’m going in”

  24. Most of them are in bad shape. They're nearly 30 years old and no upkeep. They were also damaged when they were removed from the "park". Lincoln was dropped on his head. Reagan was struck by lightning.

  26. BTW in that final AB Ohtani blows 101 by Trout, then 102 in the dirt, blows another 101 by him and finishes him off with a slider/cutter that nobody in the history of baseball could've hit. Just absolute filthy stuff.

  33. I agree. If Character is not an issue (which as an outsider it seems like it very much is) then Carter is a perfect fit for the Lions need. He's talented enough to be worthy of a high pick and fits in a spot that the Lions need help with. Can't ask for more than that. But again... I worry seriously about his off the field stuff. Yes kids do stupid things, but his stupid things seem more stupid than normal. And not being in better shape for your pro-day after having to leave the Combine seems a big red flag.

  34. I think it would be enticing playing with the offensive players and coordinator we have. You'd be taking a risk knowing how durable Goff has been but if he were to go down you know you'd be in a position to succeed which in turn could lead to more money and/or a starting job in the future somewhere else.

  39. The fact is that the red hats would never ever find out Trump is not wealthy, because none of their media would ever tell them that. Only the non-RW media, aka the mainstream media, would reveal that he's not wealthy, and red hats would dismiss it as a typical libtard hit job, which "we" are perpetrating probably because we are all jealous of him and of the freedom that red hats enjoy of which we choose to deny ourselves, or something like that. They would also not regard Trump as a loser for getting perp-walked, because their hatred of libs is bound up in a weirdly-religious persecution complex because they're not rich enough, not educated enough, not beautiful enough, for the "elites", who they secretly long to be a part of, or at least well-accepted by. They would absolutely, and without irony or shame, equate a Trump perp walk to the passion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. And man, does Trump ever want that, because his support among that sweet reliable-voting evangelical base is starting to fray.

  40. And since others are suggesting using a draft pick on a Hooker or similar... You need to relentlessly attack and belittle that philosophy. I think you're the problem. Not the ones suggesting to use a draft pick on a QB.

  41. So nobody should EVER draft a QB because all QB's last forever, right? What a BRILLIANT philosophy!!!

  42. So your answer too this situation is that there should be ONE, and ONLY ONE QB on the Lions roster, correct? That seems like a really, really good plan. All NFL teams should follow your blueprint. It seems like... such a winning philosophy.
