  1. Very true, but in the aggregate if one team in need of a 3B is put over the tax by Candelario, his value decreases because of his salary, even if the penalty is small. That is the point I wanted to make.

  2. I’m really infuriated that an ex-president has absolutely no qualms about doing this… and that no one can dissuade him from this lawless behavior, nor will anyone say to his ****ing orange face “back off you disgusting excuse for a human being”. It is beyond the pale. 🤬

  4. Also, if people paid as much attention on mobilizing for state legislature elections as they did complaining about the Supreme Court every June, a lot of this would be moot.

  6. right. and that is where the basic problem is majoritarian democracy. A minority that is segregated into a small number of legislative districts will never have enough political leverage to reverse these kinds of decisions and is in fact the recipe for attracting them. I'm not saying the answer to America's race problems is to throw out democracy, but that we first at least have to understand the basics of what is going on under the hood before we can figure out how to make the system work better for everyone. The weaknesses inherent in the system have to on the table for discussion instead of wrapped in a gauzy shroud of Founder worship, secured by American flag lapel pins. Otherwise we waste our time and energy arguing peripheral issues that never change anything anyway. But it goes back to my basic contention about almost all of human existence: Humans build conceptual models of how things work but they are never more than approximations of the underlying reality. So the trick is not to fall so much in love with your models that you fail to see that every model breaks down, requries constant tweaking, exceptions, regulation. In the US we have become really bad at this. We over commit to or cannonize models when most things are only good ideas up to a point: 'Free' markets being one easy example but the list is long and hits things at both ends of the political spectrum. And yes the current Constitution is even one. There is a reason they made it amendable, but you woudn't know it anymore.

  7. If Torkelson ends up with 20HR 75RBI and a .750 OPS this season, all of which he is either on pace for or seems capable of, I would definitely take that as a good enough step forward to build upon for future years.

  13. What if Candelario was a bit of a malcontent who was interfering with the development of players? Interfering with instruction and casting doubt on the regime's development methods. Bringing him around was only going to hinder the rebuild. I'm not saying that is true, but that's the type of stuff we don't know.

  14. I understand that, but when the Tigers lose a player that I like (and I am not really talking about Candelario because he's not very important) I am not going to be happy even if it's the "right" financial move. For example, if Greene becomes a star and they trade him in a few years for less than he's worth because they don't feel they can afford his contract, I am not going to rationalize it by saying they made a smart business move. I am just going to be disappointed that they lost him.

  15. It was a lot easier when there was no salary cap and other team's scouting deficiencies let you get guys like Lidstrom and Fedorov in the third and fourth rounds in the same draft. Then you have the contracts and everything Yzerman started with: Top 10 prospects from Bultmans end of 2018 ranking. Libor Sulak Joe Hicketts Vili Saarijarvi Gustav Lindstrom Evengy Svechnikov Jared McIssac Berggren Hronek Veleno Zadina More bad contracts than good, really no great prospects to speak of. I'm not sure that Seattle and Vegas are comparable since their gm's were able to completely decide what they wanted their team to be with very favorable protection rules, whereas Yzerman got what he was given. Seattle was even given the second overall pick to get Berniers as a cornerstone of their franchise, what has Yzerman had to work with? I myself am getting impatient but outside of some other GM being a miracle worker and getting really really lucky with trades and prospects I am not shocked that it is taking this long. I do scratch my head at some Yzerman moves but I am more than fine giving him more time to cook here.

  16. I have no problem giving the Nets money to sign Johnson cause I don't think the Pistons nor most fans wanted to sign him for the amount it would've taken. I think the main gripe is if they could've gotten a better player/fit using our space than Harris, I genuinely don't know. At the very least he will provide shooting and is only on a 1 year deal.

  17. A 32 year old $19m shooter who gets injured all the time. He just used up most of the cap space on a guy who scored 7ppg last season. Unless Bojan is being dealt to recoup that cap space, I'm not sure what the plan is. He basically did the Nets the favor of freeing them of a big contract for nothing basically.

  18. Immaculate Grid 88 8/9: 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩⬜️ Score of 241. The last 2 of the bottom row hurt me, the one I got right had a high percentage and the one I missed I knew multiple answers to for sure but I guessed on a guy who I was fairly confident in that wasn't as recent hoping for a small percentage only for him not to have won it.

  23. Yes Vierling and Baddoo will be factors for sure. And Jake Rogers needs to catch 140 games. He'll be 29 for Pete's sake, he will play good defense and hit 25 home runs and he should be doing that this year.

  24. This was basically the reason I thought he would be due for a bounceback. His mean was way higher than his performance last year, and I'm pretty sure nearly everyone, including Scott Harris and A.J. Hinch, saw that.

  25. I should give Vierling more consideration - He is the guy any OF promoted from Toledo will have to beat out. He's team controlled, he covers a lot ground on D even it doesn't have the showiest glove, he has little or no platoon split (everyday eligible) and one of the few hitters who's managing an OPS+ > 100.

  30. A much as we complain - rightfully - that Torkleson needs to hit for more consistent OBP, his 28 XBH still lead the team by a large margin (Javy next 18). And he's tied for the lead in BB.

  31. Hold up, I thought that only happened to me. I was just at Kroger today and if I needed 10 specific things, there were people blocking 8 of them. Then we can talk about people who, for some reason, insist on stopping right in the doorway to check their receipt.

  33. See? I told you to just have patience with Torkelson. He's still a kid...growing pains.

  34. Definitely, it would be nice though for him to avoid the depths he goes to when he is not dialed in. If he could just be merely below average during his down stretches instead of being absolutely dreadful like he seems to be during them his overall numbers will probably end up falling in line with what we hoped we'd get when we drafted him. For example he had that scorching stretch for a few weeks late last month and early this month but then after that he proceeded to go 3-37 with just 1XBH. Like if his bad stretches could be bad but not THAT bad things could turn out ok.

  41. I think the only two players I would take over Sewell in that draft are Lawrence and Parsons. Perhaps Chase as well but I think having another elite o lineman is more important to us than an elite WR.
