  3. I noticed (a) Carpenter in the lineup against a lefty, and (b) Rogers catching for the second game in a row These are steps in the right direction.

  4. He started really hot with Toledo with a .313/.436/.516 stat line for May but has cooled off quite a bit since then. June he had a .216/.397/.353 stat line so still walking at a good clip but not much power and for July he is .200/.273/.550 so honestly probably just a SSS thing but something to keep an eye on.

  6. The MLB Draft is hard: So far Spencer has more career HR than the rest of the top 30 draft picks from 2020 in their combined MLB careers. Actually only 4 other position players from the top 30 picks have made the majors that I could find: Nick Gonzales(7) - who's played only 20 MLB games but is starting at 2b now for the Pirates. Patrick Bailey(13) - now the Giants starting catcher, 44 games total-all this year. He's got the job because Joey Bart has been sent to AAA Garrett Mitchell(20) - Brewers catcher. He was called up last year, apparently won the job this year but promptly messed up his shoulder after 16 games and may be out for the season. Also 44 career games. Jordan Walker(21) is a starting OF for the Cards called up this year 55 games. 781 OPS so far.

  10. the interwebs don't do nuance. Avila failed at everything! is the only HOT TAKE we are allowed. seriously, Avila had some wins on his watch, probably more than he gets credit for, just not enough wins, not fast enough, not visible enough, and not enough to overcome his faceplant trades and free agents signings.

  11. I wouldn't see anything wrong with that either. But going back to his high hit tool as he's shown in at least college and the minors... I'm still holding out for something very, very... Lofty. Even if I have to patiently wait for it...

  12. I was joking my friend. That's a line from Dumb and Dumber, I probably should have clarified. And yes, there's a lot of assholes in NYC and I'm not joking. Not as many as L.A. though, talk about overrated cities in terms of living quality unless you're rich but I digress.

  14. If there were a better option at SS? I would replace him. And my point about benching him has more to do with performance than is does salary. It's not a good look for any sport when contracts over quality of play determines whether a player is benched.

  18. Not to underestimate the importance of Taiwan in the current US/China chill, but even given that, I have to wonder if the US foreign policy establishment isn't ratcheting things with China more than just a little bit deliberately. My thesis would be that since we operated under the "wealth and markets would reform China organically" paradigm for so long, we were willing to pretty much give away the store in 30 yr of the previous relationship. With the realization that the paradigm was faulty, the US finds itself with no bargaining chips left - so what to do other than create some new ones. I think this is why the hardeneing toward China has been so bi-partisan. I don't think we really need much of what the last two admins have been hitting China with for our own purposes, but we do need to establish a bank of concessions to make in order to re-establish a more balanced negotiating status with it. And of course the howling from China must be at least in part because they see what has been basically a free lunch in previous negotiations with the West coming to an end. Maybe this is true, maybe it isn't, but I were a US President, it is precisely what I would be doing. Much like the way Reagan drove the Soviets to the table by increasing pressure with things like the MX, that were in the end, created expressly to be bargained away.

  19. I was looking at Tork's latest stats and Tork is officially above average with a 101 wRC+ for the season and a 0.4 WAR (according to FG). In the last 30 games, he has this slash line is .246/.308/.533. Pretty solid, if you look at the last 15 it is even better, .300/.373/.650.

  20. China is rolling out renewables and EVs at a pace the US can only dream about matching so the MAGA can save their glee. The problem with China is not that that they aren't moving faster than pretty much anyone on renewables, it's that their development aims have been so expansive that they are still rolling out new fossil at the same time as well -- we aren't going to change their mind on that, but it is also a transient situation, the former is going to overtake the latter. Barking at China about global warming is wasted energy, they are already more committed than we are by any objective measure, but Xi is going to act difficult and confrontational because that is his general stance to the US. He's not going to give any US admin any kind of positive PR. I'm sure given the relative volume of renewable power the two countries have rolled out this is another case of the Chinese viewing Americans as both presumptuous and uninformed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy_in_China India is where things need to change.

  22. John DeSilva John DeSilva pitched 1 inning for the Tigers on August 15, 1993 in a 6-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Called up from AAA Toledo three days earlier to take the roster spot of pitcher Sean Bergman (who was optioned to Toledo), DeSilva spent 8 days on the Tigers roster before returning to the Mud Hens when pitcher David Wells came off of the disabled list. His only action came when he made his major league debut in the 8th inning at County Stadium, surrendering two hits and one run but benefiting from Tigers third baseman Scott Livingstone making a nice snag of a ground ball off the bat of Brewers right fielder Darryl Hamilton to start a 5-4-3 double play. The Tigers left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth when Alan Trammell was called out on the base path for runner interference on a Kirk Gibson ground ball. DeSilva was sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 7 as the player to be named later that netted outfielder Eric Davis for the Tigers. He made brief MLB appearances with the Dodgers and Orioles, but had greater success playing baseball in Venezuelan winter leagues, in which he won 16 games.

  23. I read this this morning and if we did trade with Texas Justin Foscue does make sense. He won't break into the infield in Texas and he fits Harris's control the strikezone mantra with 46BB to 38K at AAA only problem is like a lot of our prospects the position is questionable. https://www.mlb.com/news/each-mlb-contender-s-biggest-need

  25. I blame it on the unrealistic hype he got pre draft, he didn't come across as just a normal number 1 pick, he was being touted as a near generational bat so with descriptions like that people get unrealistic expectations.

  27. I never understood the Tork hate and this really puts it into perspective. Usually when a player get this much grief it’s because we passed on someone who’s absolutely crushing it. As you pointed out, that’s nowhere near the case. Last year should’ve been in Toledo, Tork was obviously rushed and wasn’t ready. I give him a mulligan and consider this his true rookie season. My expectations for him were 20+ home runs and and ops above 750. He is very much on the trajectory to achieve and even surpass those goals. I really hope people unclench about him, gain a little patience, and enjoy watching the progression continue.

  39. Keith Olbermann was talking on his podcast that came out around 12am Monday morning that Trump had truthed an attack on Biden that mentioned him also getting indicted under the Insurrection Act. He then deleted that truth, and reposted it with the only change being Insurrection Act changed to Espionage Act. KO was pondering the possibility that Trump had accidentally spilled the beans that he got new information from the Special Counsel pertaining to the Insurrection Act. Notch another one for King Keith.
