  1. He also enabled Marjorie Taylor Greene throughout his speakership while kicking Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell off of committees for basically no reason at all. All while breaking his word on the debt ceiling deal and trying to pin the blame of a possible shutdown on the Democrats (even after their caucus delivered the Lions share of the votes for the CR) I don't know what the future holds, but when you look at the totality of work, he has no one to blame but himself for what happened on Tuesday.

  2. I've probably told this before on the old board, but I started out a Vikings fan `cuz I was all in on Fran Tarkenton. When the Lions drafted Gary Danielson, he came to my little town in the Thumb & was the Grand Marshal of a parade. He hung out with me & the kids from my neighborhood all day - Threw passes, signed footballs - He could not have been more gracious. I said for years if I ever see Gary Danielson again ... I'm gonna punch him right in the mouth.

  3. while I love the 84 guys I'd like to see them move on from those guys. I really like Dirks a get for the Tigers would be to get Grandy as the full time Color guy on TV.. He's was on this last season for an inning and he just blew CMo and Shep out of the booth.

  4. They have him - his name is Andy Dirks. If they can't see that it's everyone's loss.

  5. Some GOP members seemed genuinely surprised the Dems didn't bail McCarthy out. The same McCarthy that a)never even asked, and b)trashed them for enabling the success of his one righteous act. Same problem - take responsibility for yourself then maybe the other side will be willing to trust you enough to work with you. This is like a dependency problem - it still hasn't gotten bad enough for the non-MAGA GOP to see they have no choice but to make a break. If they can't get there, the Dems can't help them. Maybe if they get to the end of next week and can't elect anyone, the light will start to dawn in their little grey cells, but I doubt it.

  6. Bring back Rod & Mario. So they don't like each other. Big deal. They made it work before.

  7. when you have good TV and radio guys, they become part of the fabric of the team's identity - Harwell, Dickerson, Kell, Kaline. the Bally broadcast is just awful - seems aimed at casual fans with lots of things to distract from the actual game at least they tried a lot of guys this year, so that's good

  8. I'm hoping against hope this means we are going to see more of a trend toward historical dramas and less emphasis on superheroes and MCU and franchises, although I don't imagine that would be great for international.

  9. What an emotional final game! After an 0-for-3 start and a BS four-pitch walk in his last trip to the plate, Miggy surprises us all with one final appearance at first base, and two pitches in gets the 3-unassisted, and walks off on top. What a beautiful ending to an inner-circle Hall of Fame career that will culminate in another Olde English D enshrined in Cooperstown. Tigers finish the season 78-84, and in full possession of second place, capped off by a nice little 18-10 run. I think they did better this season than the vast majority of people thought they might. They certainly beat my own preseason prediction of 75 wins pretty nicely. I would say that, despite the complaints and objections voiced throughout the season, Scott Harris's first season was a pretty solid success. Let's spend the next six months posting endlessly about what he must, I mean absolutely must, do this offseason to win this division next year and then every year after that for the rest of all of our lives.

  10. The Tigers have done more than enough to help and give him time. There is no BP hit or 'really bad look' if they non-tender him. It's a business people get that. Nobody would hold it against us to non-tender him after paying him what like $7 million for 43 games.

  11. I only listened to him for 1 game but I thought Alex Avila was good the time I heard him with Dan a couple seasons ago.

  12. I get that we're only 4 games into the season but the Lions also closed last season strong and have the second best record in the NFL over the last 14 games. I remember last year when they won a few games in a row after that 1-6 start fans were like "lets see if they hang with Buffalo, if they do then I'll start to believe", well they hung with Buffalo, then it was "lets see them beat Minnesota", well they beat Minnesota, then if was "well lets see them win on the road in NY then I'll start to believe", they then won in NY. Finally it was "if they can beat the Packers in Lambeau then I'll start to believe it's different", then of course they did that. Then in the offseason it was "Lets see if they can hang with KC", well they not only hung with them but beat them, then it's "let's see if they can win in Lambeau again" and of course they went out and dominated there. I mean the skeptics just keep moving the goal post every week, it'll get to the point where fans will keep doing it until they win a Super Bowl and I think that's unfair. What they have done the previous 60 years shouldn't matter. If the franchise won 5 Super Bowls 20 years ago would that make this current team any better? No yet in those skeptic eyes for some reason it would.

  13. It's insane the degree to which Trump's transgressions get buried just because the press considers the cake baked. Like, come the F on.... it doesn't matter if people expect him to act like a toddler and break laws, it's still front page news when you have an ex-POTUS out there spreading state secrets at his Private Club lol

  14. SOLF... that's terribly appropriate! I'll own that moniker. I really started following the Lions in the 90s and they seemed almost on the verge of breaking out, but it never happened. Then we got Ross... and it seem maybe... in 1999 we started out 6-2... Heck, we beat the St. Louis Rams. One of only three teams to do it that year. But then the second half of 1999 fell apart. But... front office make over! We got this guy Millen who was a breathe of fresh air and was gonna turn things around. Except Mornhinweg was a joke as an HC... oh but wait: The pride of the State of Michigan with a proven track record, Mariucci was coming! Except he failed. Then Marinelli... oh wait, 0-16. Then it was this Schwartz guy who the players seemed to love... in his third year he got us to 10-6. Okay... except them it all fell apart. Caldwell? Not very exciting, but... whoa! 11-5 in his first year here? Except them we slipped into perennial middle of the pack. Patricia? Eh... there was never a major up with him. Now we got Campbell and everything is looking great. But I've seen this before. I saw it in 1999, I saw it in 2011, I saw it in 2014... I've seen great years and great starts that have all gone to nothing... so yeah, SOLF is very appropriate. Intellectually I know: Different coach, different players, different front office. Intellectually I know that this isn't the SOL. But emotionally? Yeah, I'm still feeling like the other shoe is gonna drop any day now.

  15. Yes, B-ref has JAWS. They calculate WAR over the best seven years of a player's career (WAR7) and then then take the average of WAR and WAR7 to get JAWS. Here are the results for first basemen: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_1B.shtml It may surprise some people that Cabrera ranks better on WAR than WAR7.

  16. I just heard a radio caller earlier call some Lions fans "s.o.l.f. scared old lions fans" and I got a chuckle out of it cause it's true. Its like some fans are just too afraid to actually come to the realization that this team is good. I say that not cause of anybody here really but just many people I see on social media and callers on the radio. This morning a caller called in and said the Lions were gonna lose cause they lost to Carolina last year and got shutout by them like 5 years ago. Like I can maybe see citing last year even though both teams are different but jeez 5 years has absolutely no berring on this week's game. It just goes back to folks being too afraid or just not willing to just accept the fact this team is a really good football team.

  17. Charlotte has been perpetually five years from being Major League Baseball-ready for so long that it’s become a grin-and-swear-at-it ritual whenever the topic arises. And yet, we — I — can’t resist. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has been openly discussing his interest in adding two franchises soon, pending resolution of ballpark problems in Oakland, California, and Tampa Bay, Florida. Las Vegas looks like a safe bet to land the A’s, while Tampa Bay’s Rays continue discussions in their area at the same time the home team holds the best record in the big leagues. There are 30 MLB clubs now; the last expansion was in 1998. PEOPLE ON THE MOVE Promote employees and highlight your company’s success. Announce new hires, promotions and more. Get Started Owners in all sports leagues adore expansion because they love to see the game’s excitement shared. Of course, I’m kidding — it means shared expansion fees for everyone. Charlotte, despite no known campaign for MLB or even an informal investor group, has become prominent in speculative discussions of prospective expansion sites. This month, Gambling.com set the odds of the likeliest expansion cities, with Nashville, Tennessee, considered the favorite, followed by Charlotte; San Antonio, Texas; Salt Lake City; and Orlando, Florida. The latter would likely depend on the Rays leaving — either for Orlando or another state because of the proximity of Orlando and Tampa-St. Petersburg. Gambling.com based its rankings on the following criteria: civic support/funding; regional population and TV market size; proven sports audience; distance from a current MLB city; history of baseball support at other levels; and international expansion. Montreal and Tokyo were in the top 10. Given his status as Charlotte’s modern-day founding father, retired Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) CEO Hugh McColl Jr., who helped bring the NFL Carolina Panthers and NBA Charlotte Hornets to town, seemed like a reasonable person to ask for perspective on this matter. “I think that pro baseball requires a big population mass to make it profitable,” McColl told CBJ. "And whether we have that population, that mass at the moment, I don’t know. I guess one would argue that I've always been in favor of a downtown location. But getting to and from the ballpark every night is a challenge.” McColl, who is 88, added, “Someone else will have to solve that one. I can’t solve that one.” The former bank executive offered an opinion on the forecast of Nashville as a heavy favorite: “I think that we would be a better town than Nashville. Just being honest, where I think we grow faster, (with a) bigger corporate market. And, you know, we’ve got more big companies for sponsorship, and we are a town that sits on the border of the Carolinas, and we have 10, 11, 12 million people within 50 miles of us.” On the latter point, McColl got ahead of himself: the population of Charlotte within a 50-mile radius is 3.1 million. According to the latest Census data, North Carolina’s population is 10.7 million and South Carolina’s is 5.3 million. Nashville seems to figure into every economic development comparison and recruiting discussion involving Charlotte these days. In case you were wondering, their respective minor-league baseball teams are both among the most popular in the nation. McColl and EY executive Malcomb Coley spoke to CBJ as part of a new feature called “Two Views,” debuting July 14. The monthly interviews with business and civic leaders will appear in CBJ’s print edition and as a podcast. McColl and Coley discussed economic equity and mobility, commercial real estate and their investment fund, Bright Hope Capital, during the “Two Views” interview. McColl’s first-blush baseball analysis looks spot on: According to Census data, Charlotte’s metro population is 2.7 millionand Nashville’s is 2 million. San Antonio is slightly smaller (2.6 million), Salt Lake City is half as big (1.3 million) and Orlando is equal (2.7 million). Coley, the EY executive, offered a short assessment of Charlotte’s MLB chances during our brief digression. “If Mr. McColl called the commissioner, he would answer that phone call,” he said. 18. Orioles manager, Brandon Hyde, managed the Greensboro Grasshoppers 2005-2006 and the Carolina Mudcats in 2007. Both teams were then affiliated with Marlins. I don’t see MLB coming here anytime soon. NC has 10 minor league teams. If you can’t find a ballgame in your “neck of the woods” you’re not trying.

  19. I’m excited to see Kalif Raymond take on ASB’s role in the offense. He’s been able to step up with big catches when called upon the past two years. For a guy that was initially signed for his return game, his growth as a dependable slot WR has been impressive.

  20. This popped up in my feed today. In normal times it would deserve some discussion Given how badly I've seen term limits have worked in practice (Michigan) I have qualms about that one. However the executive branch didn't have limits until Truman (Thanks FDR). Banning stock trading and PACs and corporate donations seem like a good thing as well as judicial ethics.

  22. Then the GOP shouldn't elect him, should they? He's sure not going to get any Dem votes. When are voters going to start holding the GOP responsible for what they do instead of complaining about what Dems haven't stopped them from doing?

  26. That's the problem with politics, especially in the modern age. People think there are only 2 sides to every issue and if the other side is for something, you are required to be against it. You only get two buckets, for and against.

  29. Not a fan of Mario. We can do better. I like someone’s suggestion about stealing Len Kasper, especially since he’s a native, but he left Cubs TV to do White Sox, radio, because he wants to do radio. But considering the disarray that organization is in, and depending on his contract, maybe he can be had.

  36. It was the AL East we were bit by: 7-25, worse than even the Royals. We crushed the other Central teams, but we were also respectably within earshot of .500 against the West and the NL. I think this is fine for a rebuilding year. Need to see some progress against them next year if we want to take a decent step forward. If we'd done nothing different except play .500 against the AL East, we would be in the playoffs tomorrow night!

  37. The Tigers showed a lot of growth this year, particularly the younger players, and finished strong. Perhaps additional young talent will provide more WAR to get them from the 70s to the 80s in the win column, but growth is uneven and can't be relied on if they at least want to push the envelope a bit in 2024. So yeah, they should be trying to add some free agents this offseason IMO if they feel they can help push this team further along.

  38. This is my timeline... So my first memories are pretty vague on any of the 60's crew... Just the end of their careers that didn't really register... My first REAL memory of the Tigers that really stuck... was THE BIRD!!! Mark Fidrych, and then the very next year (or two) a crapload of kids coming up all at once in Trammell & Whitaker & Morris & Petry & Thompson & Kemp & Parrish & Rozema and shortly thereafter Kirk Gibson. This might explain my fascination with all the kids in the minor leagues and getting them graduated to Detroit.
