  1. Amazing how Matt Manning is on full rest tomorrow if needed.

  2. There's really no coincidence these protests are happening in an election year like the George Floyd protests in 2020. It's also not a coincidence that these campus protests intensified 6 months after the Hamas attack when Trump's trial started.

  3. The easy answer is they just messed up, or someone messed up. It happens. Everybody knows the protocol but the game moves fast, adrenaline is high, and sometimes you just do the wrong thing or don't do what you are supposed to do. I'm sure they reviewed the play and figured out what happened. They're smart people. As a player I hated it when I messed up and then had others telling me precisely what I already know. I even hate that today. Could be something as forgetting to set the timer when cooking something and realizing I screwed up and then inevitably you hear "You should have set the timer...." "Yeah, no **** asshole"

  5. 1.7: Penei Sewell, A+ One of the best in the game, and a perennial All Pro candidate if he continues on his present trajectory. It's so easy to forget this dude is only 23. 2.41: Levi Onwuzurike, D+ It'd be easy to run this dude out of town, but this story he wrote made me give him an enormous amount of respect. It would have been so easy for this dude to medically retire after 2022. No one would have blamed him. He's got serious grit, and I know he could have been so much better if not for his injuries. I disagree with the sentiment that the team should have known his back would give out on him, he started almost every game at Washington... At the same time, a #41 pick has to be better than what he's shown. It's not his fault, but with the additions of Reader and Wingo, I doubt Levi is long for the Lions at this point. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere that doesn't play Detroit twice a year and contributes. 3.72: Alim McNeill, A- He was a little slow getting going to start his career, but has easily turned into one of the unsung heroes of the Lions defense. Him and Hutch were the only two contributors on the defensive line for long stretches of time last season and I doubt we would have experienced the success we did without him. I really hope the fact that Penei and Amon-Ra were extended within hours without reference to Alim doesn't mean he's not being re-signed. 3.101: Iffy Melifonwu, B I almost gave him an incomplete grade, but I decided not to cop out. He would have been a C or C- until Week 14 of last season, when he got the starting nod over Tracy Walker and didn't look back. Will he continue to trend upwards? He could easily become an A if he does, he was lights out to close out the year. But I'm not yet ready to appoint him a sustainable success. If he continues the success into 2024, I'll be ecstatic. 4.112: Amon-Ra St. Brown, A+ Nothing more can be said. An absolute beast who would probably go in the top five in a re-draft. 4.113: Derrick Barnes, B A quality depth piece with shining moments, which is pretty good for a 4th round pick not named Amon-Ra St. Brown. He'll forever be remembered in Lions lore for his interception against the Bucs, and we will choose to all forget the missed sack against the Cowboys. 7.257: Jermar Jefferson, B He's still in the NFL and still with the Lions three years later, which is not easy to do for a 7th round pick. Kudos to him. UDFA: Brock Wright, A What a DUDE. He's as much as you could ever hope to get out of a UDFA. He's a fierce competitor, a solid player, and a fan favorite who was well worth matching a second contract for. To quote one Dan Miller, "BROCK. WRIGHT." UDFA: Jerry Jacobs, B+ He gets a lot of hate, but it's because he is a young UDFA who has been forced into a starting role for the Lions on multiple occasions, which wasn't fair to him. He went from being guaranteed $3,500 on his first contract to being an every-down corner on a team that won the NFC North. For context, a Last Chance U running back was signed by the Lions in the same offseason and was guaranteed $5,000. He held his own as much as you could expect him to. Overall: A+ I went between A and A+ on this. Levi is obviously less than ideal, but I still settled on A+ because I cannot imagine ever seeing a better draft in my lifetime. And if I do, I'll gladly give an A++. If we did a re-draft in 2024, neither Penei nor ASB make it to the Lions 1st round pick at #7. That's incredible in its own right. Add onto that that you added a defensive cornerstone for a trip to the NFC Championship in round three, solid depth and potential starters in the 3rd and 4th round, and a fan-favorite TE and starting corner as UDFAs? All in the first year of a regime, where you were hired three months before the draft and were simultaneously assembling a staff? Truly incredible stuff and completely unprecedented in Detroit... If you make Levi the 7th round pick and bump everyone else up a pick, it looks a lot better. I don't think one whiff in a draft should define the draft.

  7. Wenceel Perez is living the dream. His post game interview with Trevor Thompson, man, you can just tell he’s on cloud nine. He mentioned calling his folks after the game and hoping they could come see him play. The Tigers need to make that happen and presumably they’re working on it. Then they showed Perez meeting the 6 year old who “caught” his home run ball and his family on the field. That’s good stuff. Perez seems to have brought a bit of a spark to Detroit. For sure he’s passed by Baddoo on the depth chart. Someone else mentioned it elsewhere, but he kind off fell of the radar a season or two ago but resurfaced as a prospect. Got to love it.

  12. I think in situations like this ,where there’s no point in starting only to play for 30 minutes and hope for something clear 2 hours later, it’s wise to postpone. Nobody wants to mess around with late night games in muck. Just play 2.

  14. The Rams were desperate to replace Donald, and that's what happens when you get desperate. They were probably hoping for Byron Murphy to fall to them at #19, and when he didn't they reached for Verse. Then when they saw three DTs go in the first five picks of the second round, they panicked, sold the farm to move up, and reached for Fiske.

  15. I can't wait until Generation Whine in KD, Harden and Kyrie retire. Dudes are nothing but malcontents at every stop and I'm shocked, shocked I tell ya, that it didn't work out for the 3 bozos in Brooklyn. I would throw Ben Simmons in that whine pile as well but he doesn't have anything to whine about since he's never on court and why whine when you can collect millions upon millions of dollars to not work.

  16. That was a clinic on how to blow a game as a coach. I'm sure it's been touched on here but continuously letting Harden go 1 on 1 when he torched his defender time after time and, in addition, sitting the big guys in Gafford and Lively that got them back in the game in the first place and thus taking away any rim protection they had was coaching malpractice. Lue schooled Kidd yesterday, not that I'm surprised.

  19. Terrible coaching from Kidd as well. What has been the Dallas weakness the past couple of years? Interior defense. They fixed that this year by drafting Lively and trading for Gafford, both very good defenders and rim protectors. So why were they on the bench and Maxi was in getting torched by Harden?

  20. Truth. that extends to the corporate world as a whole. Every few years we're "upgrading" to the latest and greatest. Whether it's HR software platforms or hosting websites or simply where we store our shared files, i.e. shared drives, Sharepoint sites, OneDrive.... it's maddening. I have files all over the place now and I can't keep up. I'll spend half a day just cleaning up bookmarks. It's people just making work for themselves.

  21. And then after you answer “yeah I know”, they invariably reply, “so why didn’t you do it??” And you wanna answer, “because I’m ****ing human and I made a ****ing mistake. Do I really need to defend that?!” But you don’t, because it just doesn’t matter, and you just want it to be done with already. But it’ll still bother you for a few hours. Then you’re over it, and everything resets.

  22. I blame software. No... really. In the pre IT era, if you designed a product and it worked, you pretty much left the design alone and as people wore out their old one they would buy a new one and you had steady sales. No problem. But SW doesn't wear out. So SW writers have to keep churning versions or go broke even if they add nothing useful. Net result is the idea of constant product change just for sake of change is embedded more into American business practice that it should be.

  33. Soto drove me bonkers with his lack of control. Sure, maybe he threw hard and had great stuff. Nobody knew where the pitch was going. His over 5.0 BB/9 isn’t anything I want out of a pitcher, in particular a pitcher that is used in higher leverage situations. Kudos to him, he got that to 3.3 last season. But it’s back to the typical 5.0+ neighborhood this season. Nope, no thanks, pass. It’s funny you mention podcast hosts about Vierling. There were podcast hosts that slurped Soto’s credentials, and I just couldn’t understand it. Again, throws hard, great stuff, can’t throw strikes. So, great, two time all star, mostly to fulfill the every team represented requirement. Whatever. I think right now that Vierling looks comfortable enough at 3B and the plate to play him more often than not right now. Greene, Canha, and Carpenter should be in the lineup every day hitting 1 through 3. Perez seems to have a bit of a spurt right now. Vierling is an everyday player right now. Heck, maybe that’s the top 5 in the order right now?

  34. I've seen pics of this guy now. 350 pounds but probably 12% body fat. Never seen anything like it. The closest comp to his body type is the giant statues on Easter Island. Brad is playing 4D chess here. Not only will the guy take over the left tackle position, he'll also take over left guard at the same time.

  38. In HS, we had a pretty good team when I was a sophmore. We were ranked in the top 10 for a while. Favored to win districts. In a playoff game, I was playing LF. It was a windy day. On 3 occassions in that game that very thing happened. In one situation I had to move to my right. He came running over flailing about and each time the ball dropped. It was the kind of play you don't even think of calling as a LFer because it's right to you. We lost by 2 runs. Of course he was a senior and I was a sophmore so..... and by that point he'd already walked in graduation so what's the point in complaining. And then next year we got put into the same district bracket as a very good school so that ended our playoff hopes for my modest HS baseball career.
