I really doubt everything came together just because Baez was a cancer and all the young players suddenly felt better after he was gone. They were already starting to play better before he went on the IL. They did even better after he left, because they got his terrible bat out of the line-up and added some other players who had been in the minors or were hurt. If they acquired Bregman or Alonso and they hit, they would help the team. If they didn't hit, they would not help the team. The run they have been on since August 10 has been amazing, but I don't believe they are as good as their record during that span. If they came back with the same group next year, I don't believe they would do as well. At the same time, I do think they are pretty close to being a team that can be a perennial contender and it seems like the the right time to start spending. I do think they need another good bat, which could come from free agency or trade. They also need at another starter and a couple of relievers. I hope they try to acquire all of those things this off-season.4 points

One of the best and well-researched pieces I've seen on marijuana that dives into some of my long held skepticism of this industry: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/04/us/cannabis-marijuana-risks-addiction.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Pk4.1dAn.eLIsf7L6AvUF&fbclid=IwY2xjawFtO0lleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHZ6lpprkyWvEn45kGvHvyOWNmPGK3RjsA03X5SVS2mkG6AV1lIxlRm9OOA_aem_O_giHJFHP2EOaKbYk8vnGg Even before this, I was a no on the legalization amendment down here this year.2 points

I've gotten to the point as well, it's a different mind set and I get it. Didn't feel that way in 2016. I approach these elections from the viewpoint that, for better or worse, there's two options on the ballot that can actually *win*... For me to feel like my voice is being heard, it leaves me choosing for the lesser of two evils. I have voted GOP on occasion, but since after 2008 (grew up in a really conservative household and shifted after that election), that has largely been Democratic. But others approach it differently, and I cannot say whether I'm unequivocally right on that... The odiousness of Trump, whose character frankly challenges me frequently to the values I learned growing up, makes it harder admittedly. I will say this though from a purely political and cynical angle, and something I wish more Dems and liberals understood... while a vote flip is a +2, a write-in or a blank line is a +1. I absolutely think it's smart to target disaffected conservatives for actual votes, but we need to accept there will be folks who are not going to get there. Making the case is good, but being ****ty and indignant about it if someone cannot get there is looking a gift horse in the mouth IMO1 point

I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 7-8 guys on this roster do not finish 2025 with the team. Thats baseball. You can’t project lineups a year out.1 point

From SI: He caused a stir amongst fans online when he posted, "Surgery needed" to social media on Friday. Given his injury history in the young season, fans were concerned about his status moving forward. However, he later clarified that he meant that he simply needed a haircut.1 point

That’s what my Uncle Ted thought too. He came over from Russia and became one of the top money players in NYC. He even had his own little underground poker room. Everything was great until the day some hot shot law school kid came in cleaned him out. We’ve never heard from him again. Every 10 years or so I hear a rumor that maybe he’s coming back but it never actually materializes.1 point

“Because we are here in North Carolina, I think it is crucially important for people to recognize not only is what I’ve said about the danger that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him, but I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” she said. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/09/04/liz-cheney-voting-for-harris-001774341 point

I won't get on people too hard for going third party now after I did it in '16. I regret that, yes, but one vote did not that election make. I just don't see how somebody can look at these two candidates and say 'Yeah, they suck equally"1 point

Congress needs to approve more funds for FEMA. Last time 100 republicans voted against funding for FEMA but of course let’s vote for the former congresswoman not even running for president. Politics is beneath you.1 point

It’s not really fascinating. I’m not going to endorse either of the two candidates through my vote because I disagree with both on most all issues. I have zero confidence that either of them are fit for the job. That includes the office of local dog catcher. I’ll vote the down ticket. There, I’m still debating as well. The same point I make above applies to the NC governor’s race. Well before the CNN story on Robinson broke he was a total no go in my book. Josh Stein is more left of Cooper. I’lll vote on US House races and NC General Assembly races and the more local offices.1 point

I’m hoping to see the Tigers vs. the Padres in the World Series. And not only because I like the way it turned out last time < cough cough choke > 40 years ago. It would be an underwhelming spectacle for commercial interests and for temporary, fair weather fans who like football more than baseball anyway. It would basically be a big “fail” for everyone but us, and for people who like all varieties of David vs. Goliath narratives. And I’m honest enough to admit that I would take pleasure in this even though it’s probably kind of small for me to do so.1 point

Alonso is staying in Queens, and Bergman is staying in Houston. One of this administration’s main goals is to keep players focused on working well with each other and creating harmony and camaraderie. They are all young and making not much dough, so injecting a high-priced superstar into the mix could create be a tricky balance. After all, this team started taking off the very day their moody, high-priced, underachieving shortstop took his leave, and it hasn’t escaped my notice that he is not anywhere near the team during this playoff run.1 point

I am not confident that Jung is any better than Torkelson, but Alonso is another player I wouldn't mind seeing them pursue. And if Jung is better that Torkelson, they could put Bregman at third and try Jung at first.1 point

It was a tweet that is a few days old—it included teams that have already been eliminated. Just thought it was funny that the Tigers continue to overachieve. Based on how the O-line played without him, there's no need to rush him back. Glasgow could start at Center for probably half the teams in the league, and Awosika had a pretty good game against Seattle.1 point

A double play ends it. Mets win 4-2 and will play Philly. I listened to Bob Uecker in the 9tn. He is 90 and sounds his age. Does he always pause for a few seconds after every 4 words, even in mid-sentence?1 point

Holy cow. Pete Alonso just hit an opposite field 3-run homer with 1 out in the 9th. Only had 3 baserunners all night until this inning. Held scoreless for 15 innings until the 9th. 3-2 Mets.1 point

That's why I wanted so much for the Wings to make the playoffs last year. Rather than push the Wings into "win now" mode, I think it would have just bought some more time and got people off their back about this growing playoff drought. Win a bit last year, maybe even steal a 1st round series, and most people would be content with a step back if it meant getting the Wings to the best place in 3 years time. Not that I expect Yzerman and Illitch to make panic moves this year to make the playoffs, but rumblings will continue to get louder until the Wings make the postseason at least once. That's what the Tigers' run has given Harris and Illitch the luxury of, IMO. Tigers might well come 3rd next season and miss the playoffs, but this offseason they can make decisions that set the team up best for the rest of the '20s.1 point

Comet Tsuchinsan will be visible in a few weeks. These always are signs of something. I think it is a sign the Tigers are going to be the most unexpected WS champs ever There was a comet in the sky when Julius Caesar was assassinated. Halley's comet was in the sky when Flavius Aetius defeated Attila the Hun in a great battle. Halley's comet was in the sky when William the Conqueror invaded England and became the eventual king. Hale Bopp was in the sky when the Heaven's Gate cult committed suicide. And now, this comet will be in the sky when the Tigers claim the WS victory. Surely, it's an obvious sign.1 point

The nauseating air quality that tortured Idaho and much of the Northwest for two months has returned as smoldering embers of fires thought conquered by rain and smoke jumpers burst back into flame thanks to stiff winds. After all this time I finally realized my Detroit Tigers Covid mask could protect me from the smoke and never once noticed the smell of burning plastic or rubber in the air until I took off the mask. At least there isn’t ash and incinerated pine needles falling from the sky as it was a few weeks ago, but it still sucks. GO TIGERS ANYWAY!!!1 point

people are looking at this wrong. yes it's unseemly for a "billionaire" former POTUS to be hawking all this crap. but the real issue is money laundering. $10M seems to be the going price for a bribe for Trump if Egypt report is correct. so pick any oligarch in the world; he "buys" 100 watches at 100K - that's $10M. he does not even need the watches to be delivered. if they are, fine, throw them in the trash. Trump is accepting payment in bitcoin which is key to evading taxes, sanctions and audit trail1 point
