Reddick doesn’t fit any of the criteria. Can’t play de in detroit’s system, can’t cover from the sam, probably isn’t a culture fit2 points

I just did a quick check on catchers and their initial big league experience. I checked Bench, Piazza, IRod, Rogers, Freehan, Parish and Avila. Only one hit out of the gate, that was Alex Avila. Bench's first year he was 14 for 86, ops+ of 26. Freehan had an ops of .718 and did well. His sample is 300 ab though, not sure how he started. Jake Rogers? Ouch!! 14 for 112. Not that Jake is an average hitter now. Even IRod's ops+ his first season was 75 in 280 at bats. I do think most catchers struggle at the plate to start. Not saying Dingler will ever hit. But 84 at bats while catching 5-7 pitchers a game in a race for the playoffs is a tough entrance into becoming a MLB batter imho2 points

No. This is not what they mean about culture or bad guy. This was an on-field incident 5 years ago that was caused by over-aggression. He was chosen as Walter Payton Man of the Year candidate by his teammates the next season. He is a hard worker that is loved by his teammates and puts winning first. He’s a leader on his defense and someone that would be a huge fit. Unfortunately he’s got $50m in dead cap or trade by the Browns and I don’t see them taking that on now. A bad guy is someone that focuses on individual accomplishments and money more than team success. Someone that doesn’t put in the time effort or focus to constantly work or get better. Someone that lacks the maturity to stay out of trouble off the field.2 points

That’s so ironic to me because I hated disco for the way it was basically white people ruining funk.2 points

I saw a documentary on disco, maybe it was on The Bee Gees, and never realized that a lot of the anti disco stuff had anti gay insinuations behind it, along with corporate music ruining the genre by over saturating it.2 points

I was unhappy with Mr. Hinch in July, but my gosh............he had TWO starting pitchers down the stretch. The stretch the Tigers had was one of the greatest managerial jobs I've ever seen and I can think back, critically, to about 1980. Guess what? Not every decision he made worked. That's baseball. There is no perfect manager. You're holding him to a ridiculous standard. He got to the second round of the playoffs with, basically one starting pitcher, a bunch of kids and a couple of journeymen. The Detroit Tigers do not have a very good roster. It's okay with some potential but has more holes than your silly post. AJ Hinch basically did the equivalent of preparing a gourmet meal with nothing but stuff you can buy at 7-11. This roster, as it stands, had no real business being in the playoffs and I hope the team recognizes this and has an aggressive offseason, because something like this miracle Hinch and Fetter pulled won't happen again Cleveland simply had better players and after 5 games it showed. There is promise here going forward, but they must show consistency over the long hall to get back to the postseason again.2 points

if the raiders thought hendon hooker was a franchise qb they would have drafted him. i like HH, and i'd give him time to develop some more, but he hasnt shown anyone anything that would indicate he is a franchise qb.1 point

yeah, WAR tries to measure player value as you describe, but I think catcher is still the most difficult position to measure. I am not sure you can measure how well a catcher works with his pitchers which may or may not be an important factor being missed. I believe this is what you are talking about in your last paragraph.1 point
-
Isn’t this exactly what WAR is intended to address? How many wins does your bat adds, your defense adds, your baserunning control adds, your framing adds, your handling of pitchers add? I’m pretty sure they don’t have the measurement for all of these locked down, but in theory, you should be able to add all these up for every catcher and come to how many net wins each catcher is worth, no? If a glove-first catcher adds 6 wins on the defensive side of the ball but loses 4 with his bat, that should net out to 2 wins. Compare this to a bat-first catcher who wins you 6 games with his bat and loses 4 on defense, that should net out to 2 wins as well, which would mean they are a wash. In terms of wins to the team, they’re even. At that point you’d have to consider other aspects, such as, pitchers almost certainly don’t want to throw to catchers who lose bunches of games while he’s behind the plate no matter how well he hits, so a team might take the glove-first catcher, or even a glove-first catcher who nets out to one less win than the bat-first guy, just to keep the pitchers happy, and besides, the team can work on the catcher’s hitting, because we see a hitch in his swing we think we can fix with an adjustment and then some cage and soft toss work. I would think those are the kinds of criteria organizations probably make decisions on all the time.1 point

Even if Harris wins, and I am getting more scared she won't, its frightening and sad that about 46 or 47 percent of the people in our country are this dumb and this racist that they thing THIS is all okay. And we're getting dumber every day.1 point

Thinking about Joseph emerging as one of the top safeties in the league, and I’m reminded he was drafted with the comp pick for Kenny Golladay. Letting Golladay walk was possibly the first decision Holmes made as GM.1 point

AJ and others spoke often to the fact that finding one's way as a catcher at the major league level involves much more initial focus on catching than it does on hitting. I think Dingler will likely be fine, give him time. They already have Rogers, who seems to be a solid part of what Harris et all are building.1 point

Wings are playing the long game upping Shesterkin's value so he takes up more of their cap space on his next contract1 point

Cal Raleigh is going to win the award, but the second banana in the Verlander trade is looking better and better. If Jake could come within shouting distance of being a league average stick, he'd be a legit All-Star. Too bad he'll be 30 next season.1 point

So much for once bitten twice shy. Davante went to the Raiders solely to be with Derek Carr and it lasted one season before Carr got traded and Adams had to flounder with a replacement QB. It’s likely the same thing is going to happen in NYJ. He’s not a great longterm planner.1 point
-
Watching Rodgers flounder as his career ends is honestly way more fun than if he had just retired when he tore his Achilles. I wonder what injury he’ll fake to quit on the season when the Jets are 4-8.1 point

if Haasan Reddick washed Aaron Rogers car, the Jets would sign him to a deal he liked1 point

I doubt Holmes is interested at all tbh. Reddick doesn't fit the prototype the Lions like on edge and he's not giving Reddick the multi-year contract he desires, plus he's a turd.1 point

I'm not at all saying he would mop the floor with her. All it would take is one bad exchange, and she is not immune to that. The bar is super high for her. In fact, she's the only one with any bar at all.1 point

I remember that I couldn't listen to this game because it was too early to get good radio reception from Massachusetts. I was looking forward to the second game and I was disappointed that it was called. Even Ernie Harwell sounded disgusted. Anyway, the game was forfeited to the Tigers, so they did get a sweep, but they were 14 games out, so who cares. I just wanted to hear a game!1 point

In the late 1970s, I was into politically edgy British punk, the Talking Heads, and Tom Waits and didn’t like disco. Now that I’ve gotten older I’m OK with disco and consider it “dance music“ even though when it was then a current trend my friends and I disparaged it as “bourgeois crap.” We were sort of full of ourselves.1 point

LOL - they can try to talk him up all they like, it's not likely going to change how other MLB GMs evaluate Mize. If we trade him now we'll be selling pretty much at rock bottom. They'd have to be really done with him - and maybe they are. I think I've already posted before that my doubts about Mize at this point are as much about whether he can master the mental aspects of being a winning pitcher as his arm. Ditto for Manning FTM.1 point

Given how Harris picked through the garbage Avila left him and found some parts that were still usable, I have a good deal of confidence that he will figure this out quite well.1 point

STL is apparently doing a reset, letting Goldschmidt go and probably trading Nolan Arenado. he's due 3/64. the years are reasonable and the dollars not really relevant. makes more sense than 6 or 7 years for Bregman.1 point

Za'Darius Smith or Cam Jordan is my guess. I see Brad looking at buy low options, vets that can not only set the edge but also create some pass rush. It won't be a big name IMO. No way is he trading multiple 1sts for Crosby and nor do I think Crosby is even on the trade market.1 point
