There's legitimate reasons to not want China controlling social media algorithms, end of story. A real IYKYK situation, and the people that know the most are the ones who pushed the hardest for this.4 points

I'll probably invite fire from both sides on this, but the absolute worst people to talk to about "the other side" are people on the other end of the spectrum from that other side. (and yes, that goes both ways) In terms of 2020, Biden did an effective job of consolidating a large number of groups to vote, including those on the left. But a lot of that was out of sheer pragmatism and the fact that Trump himself was an unpopular figure at the time of the 2020 election who was seen to have botched the ongoing pandemic at that time. Biden did a lot of stuff during his term to try to placate the left, but acting like he was a creature of that wing of the D Party or that he was beloved by that wing, that's just not reality.4 points

I’m not sure that Detroit is as tough of a sell as that. The dude just spent his whole career in Houston, and that place is horrid.4 points

There were a lot of "moderate republicans" who were sick of his (Trump's) tactics after the first four years of DJT. COVID played a major role as well. Unfortunately Americans tend to keep their heads buried in the sand, and are fickle3 points

System in the US seems to be trending to a different model. You won't get in to see your doctor, but the 'system' that your doctor/hospital are part of probably has an affiliated 'urgent care' facility you can get into to see someone in your plan on short notice. But a different weakness in the US system is getting in to see a specialist once you've done the urgent care or ER walk-in and preliminary diagnosis was made that you need to see the specialist. Unless you are already so sick you were admitted, that specialist referral can easily be months.2 points

The Tik Tok model exists elsewhere. Doesn’t make elsewhere any less egregious. The PRC has weaponized Tik Tok and is using it to influence and to collect very very valuable data.2 points

Kerby Joseph was a comp pick. Melifonwu was technically a comp pick. The Rams traded their comp pick to the Lions as part of the Stafford trade.2 points

It's so common for hitters to drop off rapidly, irreversibly after 30 that you have to be really sceptical when any player has a down year after that age. It's possible that it doesn't mean anything or there was some other reason than that he's started his decline, but you have to approach it from the standpoint of finding evidence he is still going to be good instead of assuming he just had a down year. When you sign a guy at 30 you hope he's an Ian Kinsler - who performed pretty well to about age 36, but you have to understand that the odds are he is not. So if I'm the Tigers and there isn't some body of evidence explaining to me why his OBP was down and why whatever it was isn't going to happen again, I'm passing. And of course we don't know their conclusions from the deep dive into his performance that they have undoubtedly already done. If they pass, maybe he does fine somewhere else -- but they decided they were OK letting some other team wager on that particular risk-reward.2 points

If we get a comp pick for losing a minority coach, can we use that draft pick on any player or would we be forced to use it to select a minority, like a white cornerback?2 points

Well, the keyword is "elite". I don't think Alex Bregman is elite at all. He's good, but he's not in any rarified air. He played on a very good team, in a lineup that was loaded in a park where a lot of fly balls turn into home runs for right handed hitters -- plus he's coming off a steep decline in his OBP (trend or fluke?) and he's 31. He was really in a favorable situation. Yes, he's a great fit for the Tigers right now and it does not seem like he's really blocking anyone coming up (unless they plan on McGonigle moving to 3b). But is he really a 7 year/200 million guy? His best years were 2018/2019. That was a long time ago. Those 24 or 25 home runs playing in Houston are more like 19 or 20 in Comerica. That's good, but that's not special. If he really was a 7 year $200 million player - wouldn't he be signed by now?2 points

Two of baseball's greatest characters there. Man, that game. The whole country got introduced to The Bird. It's so sad how it didn't last, but I guess the story wouldn't have have been as magical if we saw him slowly age. But even in his last years when he'd be around for interviews he was like a big kid. It's like he was the last of the wide-eyed kids to make it. So many of these guys now are pumped up so much by the time they get to the big leagues they are jaded at 25. Not this guy. That wasn't an act. It breaks your heart that he died so young and so oddly. Guy didn't have a negative cell in his body.1 point

Kasper, finally given good linemates, has almost doubled his season point total over the past 4 games. After 2-5-7 in his his 35 games, he is 3-3-6 in the past 4 games.1 point

Locked on Tigers podcast had an interesting take on this. He posited (with the disclaimer that he had zero inside info, just his gut feeling) that the Tigers made their "best offer" to Bregman and that Bregman's camp is basically us this as a fall back option... that they are waiting to see if anyone gives a better deal but if not they go back to the Tigers and start negotiating in earnest.1 point

I never said this? Not sure what you're getting at. It's a commentary on guys like Bondy, a guy who bills himself as a "independent journalist" yet is apparently not interested or capable of doing even a small bit of research that would inform those who read his content that the claim he amplified, at best, lacked context. If not being outright untrue. It's literally the opposite of journalism.... to your credit you were skeptical, but there are others that will share it uncritically and just take it as truth without doing a bit of research. Just my two cents, but that's a breach of trust.... the question to ask is if he's willing to lie and misinform here, what else is he willing to lie and misinform about?1 point

Forty-eight years ago today: Gary Mark Gilmore (born December 4, 1940, McCamey, Texas, U.S.—died January 17, 1977, Draper, Utah) was an American murderer whose execution by the state of Utah in 1977 ended a de facto nationwide moratorium on capital punishment that had lasted nearly 10 years. His case also attracted widespread attention because Gilmore resisted efforts made on his behalf to commute the sentence.1 point

I was listening to NPR and if it were to be banned folks are moving over to another chinese owned Rednote. Once it reaches a million users it would be heading down the same avenue as TikTok and classified as a "Foreign Adversary". It is all smoke and mirrors in the end. https://www.npr.org/2025/01/15/nx-s1-5260742/tiktok-china-rednote-xiaohongshu-app1 point

Woof CNN — President Joe Biden will leave office with his approval rating remaining at the lowest level of his term and his favorability rating close to his personal low, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. Americans broadly view Biden’s four years in office more as a failure than as a success, with his administration doing little to turn around persistent negativity about the state of the country generally or about its economy. Overall, 36% of US adults say they approve of the way Biden handled the presidency, matching his previous low mark in CNN polling during his term, with even fewer rating his performance positively on immigration (31%), foreign affairs (32%) or the economy (33%). https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/15/politics/cnn-poll-biden-presidency/index.html1 point

I have read in a couple of places that Hinch really wants him and that he's a great teammate. All that, of course, should be taken with a grain of salt. I agree that Detroit is always going to be a tough sell and they probably have to offer a year more than other teams to get him.1 point

The Tigers pitching should be pretty strong if everyone is healthy. As it stands now their offense and defense are not impressive. I hope they do something to address that.1 point

I grabbed this from a labor law site regarding the new law: That doesn't sound like you can skip out without calling in. The 3day thing refers to how much sick time an employee can take without providing medical evidence of sickness to the employer if the employer demands it. https://www.seyfarth.com/news-insights/if-pain-yes-gain---part-125-michigan-dol-publishes-updated-paid-sick-leave-materials-as-amended-laws-february-2025-effective-date-looms.html1 point

I don’t see it like that. I think Harris is more focused on the player than the money. He has said if they identify a player that fits where they’re going, they will go hard after him. I think if they wanted Bregman, they’d have signed him.1 point

I understand all the reasons the FED always wants to move slowly and deliberately, but I think now is a time where 'sending a message' with a 25 point *increase* would have a lot more psychological effect on long terms rates than any actual slowing effect 25 pts would have on short term economy. If markets lose confidence that inflation is coming back down the rest of the way, it will make it much harder to actually make it come down. But of course the individual Fed governors also know that to bump rates would be to incur major wrath from 1600 Pennsylvania.1 point

I've told this story before but I once had a dream about Dave Dombrowski where I met him and was driving around with him Detroit, and he was dressed like Jim Rockord, had the same car he had, and the Tigers still played at Tiger Stadium. It was basically set in the 70's in Detroit and Dombrowski was Jim Rockford. My dad loved that show.1 point

Had a paper route starting at age 8, 1974. Made $4.00 every 2 weeks. That was 40 packs of cards back then. My dad drove to find me on my route one day, brought me a pack of cards the day they first showed up at Prose 5 and dime. Opened the pack and Greg Landry was on top. Very good day1 point

Riley Gaines is also the one making a big brewhaha over the volleyball player, citing some giant safety concern when teams usually practice against men's players anyways.1 point
