  4. I love the radio as well. I’ve been listening to Dan’s play-by-play every summer since at least 2003 (the 119 loss season). It’s nice to be able to listen while also doing other things, not feeling the need to be glued to the TV (or a stream).

  10. He's not even a backup. They brought in Bridgewater for the playoffs because they didn't trust Hooker as backup. It's a miss, the Lions aren't getting the dividends on Hooker unless Goff gets injured long term and Hooker gets them some wins. Holmes first two 3rd round picks were McNeil and Joseph for emphasis. I can even get the Martin trade in a sense because there's some upside for him to be a starter if he panned out, Hooker was never going to be a starter here.

  11. I don't lump Sorsdal in with the other guys, he was a 5th round pick which have like a .0000001% chance of being an= regular NFL player. The Martin swing baffled me at the time but that was only mid to low round picks so not much loss. Manu was a gamble because they traded away the future 3rd (that was recouped with the Glenn comp) then used both of his comps plus their own 3rd next year for Teslaa. Those are the big risks, Manu and Teslaa so....we'll see. If they hit on Manu, they have their bookend tackles for the next half decade at least once Decker is done which is massive so very high reward on that risk. Teslaa? I don't know, unless he's a Jamo replacement in a few years I'm not sure it's worth the risk. We'll see.... I think the Lions are in a position with a stacked roster that they can take some swings with quality over quantity. They already got their plug and play guys early in the last two drafts so the homerun swings are understandable. I'd also add the Hooker pick into the miss pile. Odd move with very little upside for a team that already had its franchise QB. Could have traded a 5th or 6th for a development QB if they wanted one so bad.

  14. And a reach pick doesn’t even necessarily mean you think you’re the smartest person in the room. May be that you think your team has spotted something suggesting some unlocked value in a player compared to the consensus, but that you assume there are a few other teams thorough or sharp enough to figure that out too. So you better pick the guy before one of those other smart team does.

  16. 3k's not so good, but the other AB was a 100mph EV shot that it took a great play by Altuve to prevent an XBH so he's not completely in the dumps either. Despite the hot start, I don't think Torkelson has suddenly become a particularly high BA hitter. He'll be doing fine if he settles out around 250-60 BA but >30HR and maintains his good walk %.

  17. I've said this before but the stirrups is a good example of changing values in baseball, especially in context of today's game with the things modern players do that some people don't like. That stirrup look was once considered flashy. Jim Bouton talked about it in his book. The generation of black players that began to thrive after integration started wearing their stirrups like that to show more socks. It was their way of bonding with each other. The old timers of the time didn't like it. I see it and it makes me feel like you do... yes, that's how you do it. It's how I did it when I played.

  20. I assume they signed Teddy Bridgewater going into the playoffs last year because they didn't trust Hooker. This was another Holmes special, buying low on an injured or otherwise undervalued prospect. Maybe he will develop into something, but just like Martin, it is not a good sign that they had to bring someone in to his position.

  21. I remember when Seger wouldn't get in... then he releases a new album and he got in. The historical element is great beause I learn about people from a long time ago that I wasn't aware of. And the industry itself has changed so much in the last 10-15 years I wonder how that will play out. Who from 2008-2025 will be considered Rock and Roll to the point of getting into the HOF? There is no modern form of Rock and Roll in terms of mainstream appeal.

  31. Yep. Imagine calling a high school senior, telling them you were the admissions officer of school X, and that while an email or portal update will follow shortly you personally wanted to call to congratulate and welcome them to the Class of '29. And then 10 seconds later say, just kidding. One guy on ESPN Radio this morning was saying that a good counter-prank would be for the dad to come home today and inform the son that the organization is taking this very seriously and feels this phone number leak damages their relationships with players and agents going forward, and that therefore the dad has been from his job as defensive coordinator. Let the son stew on those consequences to the family until the next morning.

  32. I've applied to jobs before where you know that if you get it, you'll get a call on a certain date, and if you don't get it, you'll get an email the following week. I didn't invite friends and family to a watch party (which is for the best, because I didn't get it), but I would be pretty hurt if someone prank called me and told me I got the job. That's a really messed up thing to do. That said, I also agree with your other post and generally with Jimbo. The court of public opinion can get quickly out of hand when everyone on social media feels the need to one-up the last post's level of outrage. We don't need to crucify a dumbass for being a dumbass. He may not be a "child," but even at 21, his frontal lobe isn't fully developed. Not to stray into the political, but there's a reason the Michigan Supreme Court is taking mandatory life imprisonment off the table for 19- and 20-year-olds. We understand more now about brain development and how decisions are made at a young age. In the privacy of his home, surrounded by his friends, he made an enormously stupid decision. It probably wouldn't happen at 30, and he doesn't need to pay for it for the rest of his life.

  33. The season is barely one-sixth over, but I think we can all agree that what Zach McKinstry is doing this season so far is nothing short of amazing. He qualified for a batting title his first and only time so far in his third big league season and ended up with 1.1 fWAR (Fangraphs). He was reduced to super utility status last season, his fourth, yet he still matched that 1.1 WAR. He is an everyday player once again, but already, he has 1.3 WAR so far. Just how unprecedented would his season be if he somehow maintained this pace? Well, simple math tells us that Zach would end up with 7.8 WAR. I don't think anyone reasonably hopes that could happen, let alone expects it, and probably he himself least of all. But he doesn't have to end up with WAR that high to still have a relatively historic performance. Here's what I mean: This is Zach McKnistry's fifth season. His prior high WAR is 1.1. How high would his WAR have to be to set a record for fifth-season WAR that's the highest versus his high WAR from the previous four seasons? The current record holder is Tommie Agee. His highest WAR in his first four seasons was 0.0. His fifth season WAR was 6.4. That's a difference of ... (checks math) ... +6.4. The next two highest are Darin Erstad, who had a +5.9 WAR bump in his third season (8.7 vs previous high of 2.8), and then our old buddy Cecil Fielder with a +5.8 bump (6.5 vs previous high of 0.7). So if Zach could end up with 7.8 WAR, he would have a fifth season bump of +6.7, which would give him the record. But wait: there's something else. When Agee got his fifth season bump, he was only 23 years old, so he was still heading toward his peak—plus, he was a fifth-season rookie that year. When Erstad and Cecil had their fifth season bumps, they were both 26. That age puts them solidly in the middle of their peaks. Zach is 30 this year—in fact, he turns 30 tomorrow. (Happy birthday, Zach McKinstry!) That's, like, practically a whole generation older than those other guys were, and well past a player's peak. Guys who are 30 don't just turn it up a big notch like that. It's basically unprecedented. So, then, what is the record for fifth-season bump for someone who's 30? Good question. And here's your answer: Ed Lennox and Ducky Holmes. Yeah, I don't know who they are, either. But Ed Lennox had 5.5 WAR in his age 30 season, his fifth season, and the best he'd had before that was 2.8. And Ducky (lol) clocked in at 3.7 WAR in his age-30 fifth season, versus his previous career high of 1.1. Each of these is +2.6 (rounded). But the biggest bump for any over-30 player was Cy Seymour, a legitimately very good player who had 8.7 WAR season at age 32, versus a previous high of 4.6. That's a fifth-season bump of +4.1. But here's the thing about those guys: they were all birth-of-baseball-era players. Cy's age 32 season came in 1905. Ducky's age 30 year was 1899, when there was only one 12-team league. And Lennox's age 30 season was in 1914—in the Federal League. The Federal League?! Was that even a major league? I mean, yeah, technically it is was, but ... I don't know. You tell me. But even including the National League guys, they all played during an era when society was not geared to funneling all the best potential baseball talent into the majors. A lot of the best players actually toiled in the minors, like the Pacific League and the American Association. Aggregating all the best players into one league was a hit-and-miss proposition back then, meaning the talent level they were playing against was probably not even the best in the country that it could be. So it would have been far more likely that a guy who's 30, or 32, could have his best season at that age, and by a long shot, in a way you just don't see today. So here's the bottom line: If Zach McKinstry can manage to end up with a 3.8 WAR or better, he will have the highest age-30 fifth-season bump in history. And if he can manage to end up with 5.3 WAR, it will be the the greatest ever fifth-season bump for any player age 30 or over in history. And he will have done so in much playing in tougher circumstances against highly-optimized competition that the other three age 30-plus players did not experience. Oh, and by the way: How's Carlos Guzman doing these days?

  34. For clicks and online engagement, of course. As discussed every year, the entire concept is just creative marketing for a museum about rock & roll. It’s not the same as the sports halls. How in the word does Salt N Pepa make it in? I’m not even talking about have a rap group in a rock museum. They are so far down the list of accomplished rap artists. I could name 50 that are more deserving.
