  1. Actually it’s a bad look to assume a criticism of a female writer is based on something “romantic” rather than the work itself. she’s not immune from criticism because of her gender. She’s redundant. “Win streak reached eight straight”. Uses emojis and hashtags unnecessarily and often lifts other people’s work. Nobody suggests a criticism of Mccosky is because he turned down a date.

  2. So I did it. I waited for the “Mother’s Day“ sale or whatever the heck it is to get mlb.tv for half price. $69.99 now let’s watch the team go into a nose dive and make me regret it. In all honesty I don’t think that’s going to happen.

  7. This. It has become an impossible job at most major universities. You have a wealthy alumni donor base that wants the university experience like it was in the good old days of their past. Many of the wealthiest are also very conservative in their political views. There is a highly intelligent faculty that is about research and education. They hate the big money machine that’s needed to keep the doors open, except when it comes to their grants, they love that money machine. Of course, there is the student body, who are typically much more liberal than their alumni counterparts. They are also more demonstrative and can change influence on a whim as they are in a growth and exploration stage of their life. There is also a board of regents that acts as a check and balance on the President. These boards are often a disagreeing mess in the own right and can rarely form a consensus about anything. Topping it all off is sports. We’ve made this into such a big part of the landscape that it’s become the main marketing and branding vehicles to publicize and promote the university to the general public. Not a fun job to say the least.

  8. On my iPhone, I asked a question about why the Japanese baseball season was shorter than the American season and this is what Google AI told me: AI Overview “Japanese baseball seasons are shorter than American (MLB) seasons primarily because they have fewer games…” At least they didn’t charge me for this sterling insight.

  9. Surprise... I got one space related but its a good one. Today in 1968 we almost lost one of our most celebreated astronauts about a year before he made history. To simulate flying the lunar module, NASA had arranged to build Lunar Lander Research Vehicles (LLRV) and Lunar Lander Test Vehicles (LLTV). These vehicles used a turbofan to simulate the moon's 1/6 gravity so that the astronauts could learn how to navigate the controls when trying to land. on May 6, 1968 Neil Armstrong was flying the LLRV when a malfunction caused it to go haywire and at 200 feet Neil had to eject. He was about a half second from death. And in a vehicle like that which can turn many ways ejection could have been fatal. The video below shows the crash... and it's slowed down a little bit. In real time it looks scarier. He got a busted lip and went back to the office. This was the third time he almost died when flying a space related task. (He flew combat missions in Korea so who knows how many times that happened to him then).

  12. He did that in 62 games and was hurt heading into the playoffs if Phoenix had made it. And that is a legit injury, not a tank since Phoenix is sending this year's first round pick to Houston. But since his injury he had played 35, 55, 47, 75, and 62. Again, I would rather gamble on Zion. As far as draft picks go. The new CBA really punishes apron teams so staying out of that area is going to be key. You do that by adding cheap talent to your roster, and 1st round picks are the way to do that. They are about to get a lot more valuable. Not saying don't trade them. Just saying, you better get something good when/if you do trade them.

  14. Human nature. I'm on a committee currently where a few folks want to change a policy that will have an obvious, inevitable, bad result, and they refuse to see it (they are trying to send a virtue signal instead of actually achieving virtue). It's not a end-of-the-world issue but one where the aims they hope to accomplish will actually be set back. Magic thinking? Lack of thinking? And of course you are the bad guy who must be the evil side of the issue.

  18. True, but they are never going to have a trial, so we'll never get any closure on perhaps the most foundational issue on which this country is based. Thus, we have to decide for ourselves what happened which means that we are left with a very large proportion (perhaps as much as half) of the country thinking that our president attempted a coup and thus is not a legitimate President.

  19. Huge no from me. Kessler adds shot blocking, but not necessarily rim protection. He allowed opponents to shoot 55% at the rim, which is not bad. For reference, Stewart was second best in the league at 46% and Duren is one of the worst at 62.3%. He has good PnR defensive numbers but never made the playoffs, so who knows if it translates. Good hands on offense. Not the lob threat the Duren is, but just as useless as Duren outside 5 feet. Kessler and Duren are both coming off of their rookie deals next summer, so they are about to get expensive. Having Kessler, Stewart, and Duren on the same roster is terrible roster management. Pick two and drop the third. Markannen has some talent. But he is owed around $200 million for the next 4 years. 8 years in the league and he has played 60+ games only 3 times. He is the type of player/contract that just kills organizations. Run away. I would roll the dice on Zion before Markannen. Similar concerns but much higher ceiling.

  20. philisophically the problem is you have one side (The players) with a single goal. The other side is made up of factions with different goals. Is the fact that the owners can't get their collective **** together a problem for the players to solve?

  21. I do care if they lose two seasons. At my age, I don't want them to lose any seasons. I think the argument about about large market teams dominating the game is overblown. People have been saying this my whole life, but the game has remained competitive and popular. I don't think it's worth losing seasons. That being said, I think a salary floor is more important to the health of the game than a salary cap. I think teams slashing their budgets and not even attempting to win is a bigger problem than teams spending more than everyone else.

  27. Same here. That last game was very emotional. Hanging on the wall right next to me is the lanyard with the ticket and some dirt from the infield, it's one of my most prized possessions. I buried a friend that day and coudn't imagine going back in there. I avoided driving anywhere near there when they were tearing it down.

  30. Boston just isn't fun to watch under Mazzulla. Dribble up, take the first three you see. Sure, when the threes are going they'll blow teams out but it's just boring basketball. Analytics say to get up as many threes as you can, but watching a team clang bad shot after bad shot is so ugly. Jalen Brown tried to drive a couple times in the 4th, but mostly it was just clanging bad threes for everyone on the team. As ugly as NYK's offense can be watching Brunson flop around like a fish, it was still more fun to watch than what the Celtics were doing.

  31. As far as Duren goes. I think he was lucky they played the Knicks and he could be hidden on Hart the entire series. If he was forced to actually guard someone, I think the pitchforks might be out.

  32. I don't want Durant within a hundred miles of this young team. Why do that to Cade? That is just an opinion. But here is a more practical and fact based reason you do not want Durant on this team. He isn't the missing piece. He will be 37 years old when the season starts and the Pistons would still be building. You would give up a bunch of player and draft capital to get him, and he doesn't turn them into a contender. So what do you do in 2-3 years when he retires/declines? He should go to a team that just needs a little kick to get over the hump. Indiana, Minnesota, Denver. Not a team that is quite a ways away from winning it.

  36. its howard beck from nyc. he just saw the pistons for the first time this year. and i think he was the guy who didnt have cade as even a 3rd team all nba, right? look, he has to write a piece on the pistons and came at it from a certain angle. i dont like the logic because all those teams he talked about are different and, as del points out, there are plenty of teams that DID decide to add talent and it worked. the worrying part for me is gores. as always. first of all, what kind of owner holds a press conference before his team gets ready to play game six? oh yeah, the same kind who is issuing press releases about how tough the team is. he's a egotistical maniac and the idea of him forcing a trade for kd (like his fellow sparty frat boy millionaire mat ishbia did) for the headlines and the attention (to him, of course), makes me very worried. if you could get a genuine superstar in or near his prime to play with cade, you do it. but i doubt that person actually comes available. if they do, you have to do it. this is basketball and one player can mean almost everything.

  42. I don’t know how to quantify baseball movies to discern if one is better than another. Field of Dreams just resonates with me more deeply than others. I distrust sentimentality because it is so easily exploited by demagogues. But for me Field of Dreams transcends the narrow scar of sentimentality. For me, it’s a recollection of something sewn into the fabric of my childhood that intersects with something deeper and more vibrant than myself. I like being reacquainted with that spring-like purity as often as I can. Other films don’t do that for me, and they are no less worthy of enjoyment because of it. Field of Dreams just makes all eight of my cylinders fire in the perfect sequence. To me it’s like Music.

  44. SO, because it is an off day I'm going to share the glove I designed and ordered for myself on Rico Gloves website as part of my winning an auction at my softball program's spring celebration. I chose the livery aka color scheme from the TACP beret flash which combines blue for the Air Force, Green for the Army units we support and red for the firepower we coordinate. My son called the glove heinous. Before too long it will be covered in dirt and unrecognizable.

  45. you look at how much vote totals have increased recently though and it is a different electorate. I buy the argument that making voting easier has increased the electorate - and I don't think that has played well for the dems. I don't think the Dems, who have for many decades been the party of the more engaged voter, have figured out how to reach the lower information, lower interest voter that has joined the electorate. This is why I think the Dems best hope is that Trump voter buyer's remorse simply shrinks the electorate in the next cycle as those people stay home realizing they were incompetent voters. If Dunning-Kruger holds the Dems will have a tougher go.
