  4. Murrow was right, —“This instrument can teach, it can illuminate, yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise, it is nothing but wires and lights in a box” The other part of that RTNDA speech... if the medium is driven only by profit and comfort, it will not inform citizens enough to sustain democracy. This is where we are now. Deregulate the media. When the Fairness Doctrine died...it became anarchy

  5. Up until the last month or so, I think the Tigers have performed above their talent level during Hinch's tenure. It's been an awful stretch, but I think firing him would be a knee jerk reaction and a mistake.

  8. Somehow me betting on Cleveland to win didn’t guarantee a Detroit victory last night. First bet I’ve won in months. I’ve doubled down and put everything on Cleveland again. If it doesn’t work, then there’s foul play afoot.

  11. Yeah, this is where I'm at. To be fair, I kind of thought the lack of splash at the deadline wouldn't impact their chances at making postseason. Whether or not it lessened their potential postseason success was harder to guess, as it's a bit of a crapshoot anyways. I never ruled out the Tigers having an extended streak of bad play, but didn't think it would coincide with either Cleveland or KC playing out of their minds. I mean the odds of both occurring were infinitesimal, literally. Having said that, some of the takes on here are over the top as well. For example, the "they don't care / are not trying" thing is tired. Often times it can be due to trying too hard, which doesn't work so well in baseball. I think anyone who's actually been "in the arena" with any type of team( whether in sports or business) knows it's not that simple. With regard to the decision makers and leaders, sometimes they're just wrong. Good ones admit it, reflect and adjust. If they don't, they will indeed lose their position (which will at least satisfy the bloodlust of the mob 😁). Going forward, a few more proven bats are a must, as well as more SP depth. It's foolhardy to think that you don't need 8 quality SP in this day and age.

  13. I think the 19 Ks is a sign the Tigers are pressing. I think Skubal trying the trick play is a sign the Tigers are pressing. I think Tork slamming his bat after his final K is a sign the Tigers are pressing. And I guess who can blame them. Time to re-set and win a darn game.

  16. They are tied for first place over 157 games. They should certainly contend next year. They should be adding major league talent, not subtracting their best player.

  18. That's it. Pretty simple. It's too easy to look back in hindsight and place blame. Evan "Pretcel" is twisting a narrative that Boras made two offers to Detroit late for Bregman and all we needed to do was say yes as if Boras wouldn't have taken that to another team for sweetening ? Something he does like always. Bregman wasn't coming here and there wasn't any deadline deal fix. Talent seeks it's own level very fast when injuries mount and pressure builds.

  19. Another issue is just that all media has to brought under the regulatory tent. One of the major justifications broadcasters have used to argue for looser regulation on them (and rightfully so) is that their competition is nearly totally unregulated. Cable and IP have be to refined by Congress as public utilities and brought under oversight so everyone is on a level playing field.

  22. Citizens are consumers only in the prevailing paradigm. There is no conception of public good. Even the dems appear to have abandoned that concept. That statement covers a lot of ground. We need a media shaped by the idea of public good. There are many who think that public good means Christian patriarchy but I don't. To me it means good citizenship and respect for fellow citizens no matter their class or ethnicity.

  23. No idea if there is legitimate news on this or someone just thought of it and put it on reddit, but there is a reddit post indicating that ABC could pull SEC football from Sinclear and Nexstar in response to them preempting Kimmel. One of the comments: "So, how did the American Revolution of 2025 start? A podcaster was killed in Utah and then ABC threatened not to air college football in the south." As I laughed at that, my next thought was 150 years from now, some teacher explaining that a 2nd civil war started over football and some dumbass kid raising his hand to say it really wasn't about football itself, but rather states rights to be able to watch football'

  27. My impression of some of these comments is that not everyone has attended games where the systems were being used. I’m an old guy and a traditionalist…and I like the ABS/Challenge system. From the time the pitcher/hitter/catcher indicates that they want to challenge a ball/strike call until the call is confirmed or overturned takes less than a minute. The Challenge works fine. I’ve been to a dozen games where the Challenge was being used. It does not hold up the game. It is automatic, strike or ball. It’s not like the challenge reviews in MLB where you have to wait on the New York review, which can take forever sometimes. My personal opinion is that the Challenge system will end up being a soft introduction to the full ABS system, as in, no challenge. The system will read the pitch and the call will immediately be relayed to the umpire, method TBD. For fans this won’t be any different that what you have going on now, except the call will be correct. This, I am ready for. I’ve attended a number of games where the straight up ABS System (no challenge) was used and it’s totally invisible to the fan experience. Those in attendance that weren’t aware the ump was a part of the straight ABS system would still yell at the ump when they thought the call was incorrect. I’m sure that will still be a part of the game for years. Of all the changes in baseball over the recent years, this is the one change that I am happy to see. And with this, I truly hope the strike box on the screen during the televised games goes away.

  31. I'm beginning to think that with the pitching staff so shattered, Flaherty more likely to either bail or just be bad, Greene having plateaued, Meadows looking like he isn't an MLB hitter, Torkelson's ceiling locking in at about an 800 OPS (IOW good player, but not a great one), McKinstry having come to earth, Torres gone, I'm having trouble seeing them being a >500 team next season. So maybe they get a boost from Anderson or McGonigle by mid-season, still doesn't help the hole the pitching will be in.

  32. Agreed but like statistics the underlying "cracks" can't be ignored. We benefited by some players playing over their skies for half a season and as we draw to a close we do not have a third baseman, shortstop , second baseman or leadoff hitter. Those are gaping holes that a Skubul trade could help fill IF the decision is made to "retool" this team. Ask yourself if you think this team as constituted can return after such a historic collapse. I do not have the answer but many significant changes need to be made and Skubul has only one year left and has lost two years in a row against Cleveland when it mattered. Really tough off season ahead. Should be interesting.

  40. It's worth remembering that Sinclair and Nexstar cover only small fraction of ABC's potential nationwide audience, and that most of that audience reside in small markets. They have 56 of ABC affiliates in the 210 markets, but only 14 of them are in Top 50 markets, covering 8.6% of US TV households; while 14 more are in markets 51-100 covering 3.4% of US TV HH; and the remaining 28 are in markets 101-210 covering 1.2% of US TV HH. So, 56 of 210 markets sounds like a lot, and it's not nothing, but grand total, the "ban" covers only about 13.3% of US TV HHs, which is fewer than the number of TV households in the New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago DMAs combined. It's because Sinclair and Nexstar focus on affiliates in small markets, many of those in deep ruby red areas, populated by people who probably didn't watch much Kimmel—or other late night talk shows—in the first place. So in the final analysis, all this posturing by the companies is for the benefit of an audience of one, and by extension, for both the minions who work for him and the red hats who idolize him.

  41. My thing is to do my utmost to leave the emotions in the game itself... especially when they lose. I have a distinct memory a handful of years ago, after yet another Lions loss, of thinking: "Wait, if the Lions had won... would I be super giddy excited and feel like my whole week was made? No? Then why am I letting a lose make me ultra grumpy and pissed off and taking it out on my family?" So now I let myself feel whatever emotion I want during the game, but then when the game is over I remind myself that a loss means nothing real and tangible to my life.

  42. Missed calls have been happening, in all of sports, for years. Every sport. The thing that really, really bothers me is the possibility of cheating being done because of the "legal" gambling. Every time a call is missed, or a questionable call is made, it makes me wonder, in the back of my mind, whether there's cheating going on.
