oblong Posted January 3 Share Posted January 3 this is footage from Zeppelin's show at the Silverdome. Recently remastered footage from an 8MM camera and synced up with audio. IDK, I expected to be somewhat disappointed because Page was a studio specialist/perfectionist and not a particularly inspiring improvisationalist (even assuming he was sober - as noted!). They couldn't perform a lot of their signature work very close to their recordings -especially given the tech available at the time. Bonham always got an extended drum solo in a live set but that only gets you so far. 🤣 I once heard Pat Metheny talking about how much work (and cost) it was to produce a live performance that could capture the quality of the studio work that PMG did. Takes a lot of skill and planning and extra musicians. Stevie Ray Vaughn would have been the guitar player to have seen live, but I never did. But I also appreciate bands, like the Allmans, who would go off whereever they felt like going during a song. SRV was here a few weeks before he died... oh to have been there. His death really got to me. I was 17 and was probably the first celebrity/musician that I really liked to have died. Just numbing. He had turned his life around and damn, he was only 35. He is credited for making guitar cool again and reintroducing blues based rock after what we went through in the 80's. Yes we had EVH but that wasn't blues based. Superior songwriting from Gabe Lee compared to almost anything out there in music in general, but certainly compared to the booty-pop and bro-country that's out there in mainstream country. My favorite songs from Gabe Lee's Drink the River album are the title track Drink the River, Lidocaine, Even Jesus Got the Blues, and my personal favorite, The Wild. There will always be solo and small group musicians that just record what they play. But I don't begrudge modern musicians the use of the studio either. It's the modern equivalent of the 100 piece orchestra a Beethoven had or even the 30-40 that a Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey had that is just too expensive to have or tour with in today's economics. It just means some music stands on it's own as recorded first rather than as the recording of something that was first live performance.
