So,you would have been OK with Clinton? Fear of Clinton was the reason Putin campaigned for Trump.5 points

Doesn't matter if the players give a shit about the fans. The players didn't do this. In our area opening day is like a holiday, a rite of spring and we're being denied it for the 3rd time in a row, but this time it's over greed. We are finally.............FINALLY getting towards real normalcy again and with mandates being dropped and events starting up again it looks like March and April will be the months where things come together and baseball is f-ing that up. Rob Manfred is a bag of dirt and yes, he is only doing the owners' bidding, but based on his management of the game during his tenure, I feel like he's spearheading the strategy here. He's clueless. You're supposed leave something better than you found it and you can say that for Roger Goodell, Gary Bettman and Adam Silver, as much as we might hate them at times, their leagues are doing better than when they started. Not Manfred. Baseball's standing is dropping, attendance is down, fewer teams are competitive and most of the stars of the game would not be recognized and the fanbase's median age is rising sharply. This won't help.3 points

If we were on the old board, "Why must liberals always scream and jeer" would be bumped with that picture of MTG and Borebert jeering.3 points

Great night at LCA. Splurged a bit to ensure I keep the Best Uncle Award and got some last-minute glass seats. My 10yo nephew is a hockey nut and was in paradise. I was expecting to see a game where we lost but could say “this is a game we win two years from now”. Certainly loved seeing us pull it out. Brought me back to the years we were spoiled. Only yick to my yum all night long was that Raymond made a beeline right to my nephew after being announced as the second star, lifted his stick that just scored the game winner over the glass, and it ricocheted JUST wrong off the glass so that the people behind us got it instead of us. SO close. Still a phenomenal memory of a night though.3 points

They need to fix it though so MTG is on the other side of Boebert.2 points

For my money, Biden, Austin, Sullivan and Blinken have been playing the Stradivarius in this crisis. They can't do more than they have without changing the dynamic for the worse. Look at the alliance. Its strong. its got the free-riders stepping up in big ways and vocally. Germany spending $100B on defense with an SPD government!? unfreekingbelievable. Trump shit on the alliance and created resentment. He shoved member leaders out of his way at conferences. He sent his children in to shake down those who sought influence. He allowed the dumbest forces in American politics to destroy the fabric of internal order in the country to the point where Putin thought January 6th was the true face of the country.2 points

No one who supports a cretin like Trump has any right to call someone else a dolt. Donald Trump literally had to pay a proxy to take his college exams for him he's such a maroon. The guy drew on a weather map with a sharpie and asked about injecting bleach into your body to combat Covid. His own Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called him a fucking moron. The guy is the King of the Clods.2 points

I plan on still wearing my mask when I’m doing casual shopping, grocery shopping etc. I have an operation coming up in about 4 to 6 weeks, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to have this virus before I have to check into the hospital. I didn’t go for two years being smart about this to changed today.2 points

This question, after our suffering through four years of the most incompetent, dangerous, megalomaniac president in history. As long as Harris would have Biden’s people still around her, I wouldn’t worry much about it.2 points

Bombing yachts would be dumb, but lets not forget that Russia has hit actual vessels in the Black Sea since this has began (sailing with the flags of allies like Japan and Turkey)... and yet that apparently hasn't been considered "escalatory" nor has it resulted in WWIII2 points

And assassinating your rivals. Putin is driving this show all by himself, and some sycophants are along for the ride in order to cash in.2 points

If the fans were the top of his priority list, they would have caved and started the season on time.2 points

Right, an empty suit. He doesn't give a shit about the fans or the game except for the money he can get out of it. I'll never forget the day he said they were going to expand playoffs because Americans love brackets! I have never seen anyone care less about the game than him.2 points

Sure, that's fine. Its MLB. I'll believe it when I see it. If speeding up the game does lead to more revenue windfalls than appeasing gamblers, then that's the direction they will steer the ship. Their #1 priority is (acquiring as much cash from the) fans (as possible).1 point

And please be concrete.... no platitudes about "projecting strength", actual concrete actions that would have effectively stopped Putin and avoided this war.1 point

Vladimir Putin was always going to to do this. This was aspirational for him. By all accounts, one thing we can take him at his word on is that he sees the fall of the USSR as a cataclysmic event and that, at 71 years old and reports that maybe he's not in the best of health, he sees restoring Russia to it's previous glory as part of his lasting legacy. Not everything that happens in the world or every decision a world leader makes revolves around domestic American politics.1 point

Every time you mention dementia, you know you lose any credibility in what you say, right?1 point

We need a strong leader and someone who instills fear in our enemies. Biden is not that person. The world sees how weak he is and knows he's not playing with a full deck. Harris isn't effected by dementia but shes a moron who has no business in that position. It doesn't matter if they're Dem or Rep, strength and and the ability to instill fear is something any POTUS needs. We're in a very bad place right now.1 point

You must be thinking about Joe and his boy. Going to war with Iran would be almost as bad as going to war with Russia. Putin may be evil but Iran is far worse. We will find out how bad they are if Biden gives them another infusion of cash and allows them to get nukes in a deal like Obama did for them. I've heard they may be getting close to a new deal.1 point

He was convinced because either Jared or Ivanka or other free loading crony got something out of it like a loan extension, patent, or some other nonsense. Not one decision made by that admin was done with the interests of the American people in mind. There was always something in it for them.1 point

That could be for warmth.... I'm sensitive to this because I have a special needs child. He's unaffected by this. But I read a story about another child who had some disease where covid could be fatal and virus effectivity for him is a lot lower. When he heard about the schools getting rid of the mask mandate he started crying and asked his mom "Does this mean I can't go to school now?" There's a lot of families dealing with that. I'm not saying everybody has to adjust their way of doing things but just show some empathy because we don't know everyone's story.1 point

Agreed, Harris would have to make a decision based on 2-3 alternating views made by experts in their fields. Even if she consistently made the worse choice, it would still have some merit. Even for the few experts in their fields that were able to get within earshot of Trump, they had to compete with uninformed choices from Trump friends/family along with Trump's own 'why don't we just say fuck it, that'll be good for ratings' mentality.1 point

no reason for MLB to change things. They are getting a larger and larger share of a larger and larger pie. Passan's article the other day outlines everything perfectly: MLB got a cap, which they have been hardening by rule and practice over the last 10 years. They got it without giving back anything at all, including no salary floor and no guaranteed revenue split, which would have required teams to open their books. MLB is negotiating 9 figure deals with Apple and Peacock for streaming rights. The Pirates makes a profit as ownership has seem its investment increase more than 10 fold. This "dying" sport is awash in so many guaranteed revenue streams, it is almost impossible not to turn a profit.1 point

the problem for the players union is that they are fighting the wrong battle. The teams near the cap are not the problem for baseball salaries, it's the teams nowhere near the cap who won't be affected at all by whatever the number is. How much difference will the lux tax number have on the Marlins or Pirates? Exactly none. If anything, Manfred is right that the tax money is one route for low revenue teams to spend more - thought without a mechanism to force that, that's also is an empty promise. But It's teams *with* "cap space", that, and pre-arb salaries that hold down the revenue split, not the cap. As a union in toto, the player's union is a total failure - all they are interested is protecting the interests of their own "1%" class to sign half billion dollar contracts, which again, does nothing for the most of their membership or median salaries at all.1 point

what did people expect him to say? i heard his speech and it was exactly what any executive would say. we thank the union for participating and we look forward to negotiating more but we gave up a lot and we couldnt come to an agreement. union comes up and says the opposite. rinse, repeat.1 point

As much as I would have preferred they start on time, this doesn’t really bother me. I guess this was an expectation all along. Minor league games will start on time which makes life good for an “OK Boomer” like myself. There are two weeks during the MiLB season when Toledo, Erie, and WM are all at home the same week. I’d like to think we could see those three parks/teams this summer. Still lots of good ball without the majors.1 point
