  2. I believe every owner will spend more when they have a competitive core. Until then, they are going to continue to trade veterans for future assets. Expecting them to spend before they have a foundation in place is just naive. This whole current chant of "every team should spend every year because they can afford it!" Is just goofy.

  3. I much prefer what the Lions are doing in terms of a rebuild compared to like the Jaguars. Not even just in terms of the Jags vastly overpaying for these players, but in terms of having a sort of vision for the future. The Lions are accumulating draft picks, and (though a small sample size) are hitting on those picks. They're keeping the players that can fill a role moving forward, but not over-committing to them (financially or in length). It seems like the Jaguars are just saying "eh, we have the money, f it" and going out and just trying to plug holes in their roster with whatever they can afford, as if it will instantly make them a contender. As Hongbit said, this is a larger than two year rebuild. A year or two from now, I think we might be able to say that we are only one or two pieces from really competing. At that point, I think it's more reasonable to say "let's go out and spend $70M on a guy who can come in here and instantly put us over the top", rather than spending $70M this year on a guy to fill a hole that for all we know could be filled in the draft, at a much cheaper price for just as long. As opposed to the Jaguars, who seem to just be throwing s*** at the wall and seeing if it will stick long enough to win a few games.

  8. Say hello to Remi. Not sure I was fully ready, but one of the boys brought him home from a friend the other day without asking, and then did the thing where they just waited until I inevitably became emotionally attached and couldn't say no. LOL.

  12. I am not sure I agree with all of his assumptions but there’s some reason in there. As I think about it more, it seems more likely that it’s not about overvaluing the current talent on the roster as I said yesterday but more about sticking with the plan. This was never a 2 year rebuild. It was always part of the plan to still struggle a bit in year 2. They aren’t tanking by any means but there’s no real rush to dramatically improve the roster this season. Getting to 7-8 wins and at least being around the playoff hunt later in the season would be a great result for year 2. I think they want to give a longer look to some players on the roster that they probably would’ve moved on from if they were a year further along in the rebuild. Will be interesting to see what they do over the next few days.

  13. I would hate dealing with Oakland. By default I would think the Tigers got worked because of how Oakland seems to get useful parts back for whomever they deal away. I'm sure its not true for every trade that they make, but it seems that way.

  14. Agree. A minor league deal with an invite to Lakeland is fine. Now go steal Castillo from the Reds.

  16. and also, a 2 year deal comes with little risk, which is what most of these relievers are signing for

  18. Some teams are better at identifying and developing relievers I think. It use to bug me how the Tigers for so long couldn't find any and other teams had about 4 relievers that were better than anything they could find.

  21. Anyone interested in a Ukrainian backdoor entry into NATO? Zelenskyy cedes the western half of Ukraine to Poland (west of the Dnieper River, which includes current hot spots Kiev, Kherson, and Nikolaev. It is also 95% ethnic Ukrainians, as opposed to East of the Dnieper which is 95% Russian. I'm not certain of the exact numbers... but something along those lines...). Poland admits the union of western Ukraine officially into Polish control. Poland/(western Ukraine) declares war on Russian troops West of the Dnieper River. Putin sues for a peace deal. PS: Historical precedent - The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th century included Poland, Lithuania, and western Ukraine.

  31. Trump looked like a better candidate before he was elected. He did some good things but we put up with a lot of things that are best described as not presidential. I've always wondered who selected Biden for the dem nomination. The race was still close when everyone stepped aside. Doesn't really matter though because his challengers were bad and worse. Biden doesn't have the cognitive skills now and he refuses to take to take a cognitive test for good reason. Seems like he would since more than half the country does think he's fit for the office. I don't think he's calling many of the shots now, if any at all.

  32. Russia imposed sanctions on President Biden and other top U.S. officials, in a move aimed at restricting travel to Russia in response to “unprecedented sanctions” preventing Russian officials from entering the U.S. Russia’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that it also sanctioned Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, CIA Director William Burns and White House press secretary Jen Psaki. The list also includes former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Mr. Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. The Kremlin’s latest round of travel restrictions includes 13 people, and the foreign ministry said the measures could be expanded. “In the near future, new announcements will follow to expand the sanctions list by including top U.S. officials, military, lawmakers, businessmen, experts and media people who are Russophobic or who contribute to inciting hatred against Russia and the introduction of restrictive measures,” the foreign ministry said in a statement. -WSJ
