Look, I like you and everything, you're an entertaining poster, and you have some pretty good takes here and there, same way most of us here do. But come on, this post is just hot nonsense. First of all, you didn't join right after Javy Baez signed. You joined two months prior to that and had logged at least a gross of posts by the time that happened. So you need to get your recallometer checked. Secondly, you did post a few things about Javy before he was signed and you were on record firmly against it happening, but it's not as though you were then immediately attacked by sabermetric posters out to crush you for your, I suppose, apostasy. You actually got a lot of agreement on this board about him, and those of us here who either liked the signing, or were at least OK with it, freely admitted his down sides. I myself, having watched him live for seven seasons, am keenly aware of his strengths and weaknesses, and I do admit to trying to draw some hope out of some of his process improvements in New York. But I was also on record here that Javy was not my first choice, and I'm nearly certain no one else here had him as their #1 target, either. So it's not like it was you against some Javy Army, because there isn't one here and never has been. Lastly, once Javy was signed, you didn't post boo about the deal or about him the player until this month, when it was safe to do so once he'd already gotten off to his unmistakably slow start. So this narrative you've spun about being this lone voice of reason heroically standing up to the woke saber mob day after dayonce he had signed crumbles pretty quickly. Now personally, my opinion is that the guy is ours now, so we might as well root for him to turn it around, which history has shown will happen at some point, unless at age 29 he's done done, which seems super unlikely. In the meantime, you yourself are obviously totally allowed to give up on him completely. Not all people here will agree with that, but maybe some do, and either way, there's room for all kinds of opinions here. But your self-serving Javy-is-toast campaign of the last couple weeks here is rather confusing because none of us here can figure out exactly who it is you're waging it against. Unless it's this guy:4 points

I guess after thinking about it he went on the dl in mid April so 60 days will be in a couple weeks, so if they weren't expecting him back for another few weeks you might as well put him there to open up a spot on the 40.2 points

I'm being a bit presumptuous that this fits in this thread, but I have neighbors every Memorial Day who put on a Fireworks show. I live in a city with a lot of retired/active military, and just think this has triggering PTSD all over it. Fireworks are for celebration, not mourning.2 points

Looks like we are going to go for a handgun freeze. https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/national-handgun-freeze-key-feature-of-new-firearm-control-bill-1.5923922 I think that this is smart. If you legally own a handgun (one of my neighbours has a .45, I probably didn't say that correctly) then by all means keep it and enjoy yourself but you are its last owner. I think that this will sail through Parliament, the Liberals and the NDP by themselves will carry it, and I will be interested to see how many Conservatives will oppose it. We do have a low-IQ zone here in Canada, it is called Alberta, but even there I don't think that the gun nuts have a critical mass. Even so, a Conservative MP from Alberta probably has no choice but to vote against this bill, but Conservatives elsewhere in the country would be taking a big chance. My opinion anyway. Note also that long guns, those which are not already banned, will be limited to a 5-shot capacity. I am glad that the speechwriters included this obvious truth: other than target shooting and hunting there is no good reason for having a gun.2 points

it's awesome how much maga stuff falls apart if it has to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm recalling that amazing 1-62 record they had in 2020 election fraud cases.1 point

While we're in the midst of getting blown out it made me go see how many times we were on the winning end up blow outs and best I can tell the 13-0 Rockies game is the only one where we won by 5 or more runs, in fact we only have 3 games where we won by more than 3 runs. Virtually all our wins have been by 1 or 2 runs so as bad as our record is it could be even worse if our bullpen wasn't holding up their end of things.1 point

I dunno, I think I would prefer a blowout to a stress inducing, nail biting tough loss. Let's move on to the evening game.1 point

I think all this is a high probability too. The point I was attempting to make (perhaps not so eloquently) was more to the odds of a longer duration of a contract than we have seen, and thus then length of potential tenure with one team in the case of a new, young generational player today ...over the likelihood of a specific generational talent combination like Tram and Lou existing on the same team in their formative years. That as you point out...is a very remote occurrence. As others have mentioned, and is a very fair/unknown data point, is what will teams do with a generational asset when they have it locked into a favorable, ultra long contract? Both in asset value and/or cost of the contract. This we haven't seen played out. Using a specific example, if Tatis continues to be Tatis when he returns, and he puts up Trout numbers next year and the year after, will the fact they still have him under contract for the next 10 years further, age 26 to 35 at an 29.9M AAV, eventually pressure the 'smart people' on the team to leverage their club advantage for an even potential greater return when opportunity presents? To your second point on the 'cost', I don't think this comes into play for true generational talent...really for any of the clubs, save a handful. The point of these contracts is to save money (potentially a monster pile of it) by opening up your team's future risk profile in exchange for the young player's need for security and/or greed (depending on your prospective I guess). If the play pays off...the money is a non issue IMO. Is paying Wander Franco $25 million in 2033, at 32 years old (especially if he is the yearly 5-8 WAR player as projected), a burden to a team when the 3rd lowest payroll in MLB today is almost $70 million? 10 years from now all teams will likely be north of 100 million. 25M for a phenom (or 50 for 2) seems very doable...especially when accounting for the additional indirect value of the 'franchise' player (merch, gate revenue and loyalty of fans). What is the fair market value of a 32 year old elite player in 2033? 50 million a year? 60? 70? Again, I think this further underlines your point the potential for these types of contracts, if successful, to be used as trade leverage...although the inverse can also be true; the reason for giving the contract in the first place (exchanging control for more cash), means that another re-up for more years could in exchange for a higher AAV could present itself again. Ie) if Franco is putting up an 8 war at 32 and has two years left at 25M...maybe it makes sense to add a couple years more at a higher number. ...but I digress. Apologies for the long reply.1 point

Not so sure...at least when it comes to generational talent such as you mentioned playing on the same team long term. Same for having new faces on that infographic in the future. Seems to me like the analytics of things are now changing, and spreading into things not on field... notably risk/reward contractually on youth. Specifically, leveraging control years, and a player's need for either instant gratification and/or security, for the (theoretically) club-friendly decade+ contracts when it comes to players that are large skill outliers to the norm. The odds of two generational talents coming up together is what is ultra rare (and what we may not see again...or for a very long time anyway)...but I think the odds of two such youngsters ultimately having long careers together on one team is much more probable today then it was at any other point in the last 20 years or so. /insert Franco, Tatis contracts here Disclaimer: I think it's important to not make the definition of 'star player' too broad here. Good to great players aren't likely to get this sort of treatment, they will still probably hop around to 2, 3, 4 teams over their careers in exchange for teams still fully enjoying their team friendly controlled years...but we likely will see 1 or 2 'monster' contracts given out every year to the young and uber-gifted (who arent pitchers)...IMO. So, as a scenario, let's put on our make-believe hats, and say Tork stops 'sucking wind,' goes on a tear and hits 50 HRs this year and 60 next year...while Greene comes up in June and posts 5 WAR, then 8 next year. I postulate that team would intensely focus on re-allocating the freed-up 'Cabrera money' to locking them both down for the next dozen years...as opposed to enjoying the cheap, controlled years of the duo, and deploying that saved cash elsewhere...as teams have been want to do the past few decades Sidenote: Not sure if anyone recalls, but I had ~7000 or so posts before ~2010 at the 'old' forum...been lurking silently for a decade plus. So...'hey again', (= /wave1 point

Stating things as absolute fact that are obviously not true is a defining characteristic of a MAGA. Any hedging or lack of confidence is considered a weakness. Whether something is true or not is not a concern.1 point

I really don't get why they're batting Rony Garcia 10th. I mean, pitchers are terrible hitters and that means fewer at bats for the top of your lineup. Hinch is losing it, man.1 point

My company is starting to require people return to the office. There is no vaccine requirement. Now that people will be returning to the office, the company is offering an additional 5 days of COVID related sick time. They never offered this the entire two years we were remote. They are literally acknowledging that their return to office policy is going to cause people to get COVID but they are charging ahead anyways. There is a text that goes out to all employees with basic screening questions that you do not have COVID symptoms or were not in contact with someone who has COVID. I'm not required to go in every day, but on days I have been, I answered yes so I haven't gone in. Obviously, my supervisor has wised up to what I'm doing so this will lead to some tense meetings in the future.1 point

yeah, that all pisses me off in a low-burn sort of way. The Trump stars and stripes flag or the stars replaced with crosses flags or the thin blue line flags...all not great.1 point

I commented on something like this in another thread recently. The American flag is used all day-every day for commercial purposes. It pisses me off to see these huuuuge American flags flying over car lots. It also pisses me off when these used car lots put smaller American flags on antennas and such. Worn and tattered flags being flown. I see it all the time. Either fly the flag properly or don’t fly the flag at all. I also hate to see the flag used for the police support thing with the flag stripes altered to make a political statement. ….still rolling here…. Under Armour and other clothing manufacturers have replaced the stars in the flag with their logo on their shirts. This pisses me off too. This is a total disrespect for the flag. The American flag is used all the time as a prop for commercial purposes. I have far more respect for someone burning the flag in true protest against the government than anyone using the flag for commercial purposes. American flags imprinted on the Covid masks is an assault on the flag as well. Why not just blow your nose on it! And…you always love to see the American flag swim shorts at the beach on the guy that is 350 pounds and wearing it in his crack. end of rant, for now.1 point

Yeah 9 times out of 10 when I have the game on I just have it on in the background with the sound off or low while I watch or do something else on my laptop. In the rare times where it appears an important situation in the game is happening I'll turn up the volume and pay total attention to the game but that may happen only a few times a game. Maybe if/when the Tigers actually get good again I'll go back to giving the game my undivided attention but who knows since its been so long since they were good my attention span and viewing habits have changed since then so its hard to say for sure.1 point

Diving into his splits deeper and I think G2 may be onto something with him and spider tack. The ban started 6/21 last year and he was solid up until his start on 6/20 where he looked like crap. Even though the ban didn't start till the following day it's not unreasonable to think that he pitched that game clean just cause more eyes were starting to be on guys and to prepare for the ban. From that point forward he sucked for the rest of 2021 and sucked this year. So he was one of the better pitchers in baseball in 2020, was off to a good enough start in 2021 then he falls apart from mid June on. His breakdown timeline almost completely coincides with the spider tack ban. It could possibly just be a coincidence but considering he wasn't an overpowering guy to begin with he seems like the type of pitcher that would benefit more from spider tack then others so it being a coincidence seems unlikely to me.1 point

Exactly. I have no sympathy for anyone who has the twenty dollars to subscribe to MLB Audio and hack an audio overlay, yet still subjects themselves to Shep and Old Player instead and then comes in here and whines about how bad they are. What the hell do you expect, amirite. I mean—I’m not saying stop. It’s entertaining to see posters whinge about things completely within their control. I’m just saying, come on, if you hate it so bad, take a little initiative here.1 point
