  2. Nobody else has. Not even close. Here all the Hall of Famers at hitting positions (outfield, first base, DH) and how they did in their last seven seasons, sorted by oWAR cumulative for their last seven seasons (min 2,500 PA): And here's Miggy as of yesterday: Miggy is setting a new standard for Hall-of-Famer career collapse that will be talked about for generations.

  4. The umpires may not 'run' the clock, but they are in charge of it. I don't think a home team clock operator would get much leeway from the HP ump before he noticed if the operator were trying to shade it for the home team. Then again, we are talking about these major league umpires......🤮

  8. I left my mayor vote blank, but that is because I am friends with Donna's ex-husband's best friend, and on the golf course have heard dozens of stories about how big of a piece of **** she and her now husband are. ... Background here, that divorce was very very public. She was the news anchor of the NBC affiliate, married to the sports anchor for the same affiliate, was caught banging the weatherman who she is now married to. it was ugly in public, and behind the scenes even uglier and makes her and especially the weatherman look awful. She is a 3X breast cancer survivor, which is a good story. She started a charity for it, which is good PR. There's a marathon named after her where everybody wears pink and thinks they are helping. The tax forms for the charity don't paint that great of a picture, but I have yet to find the smoking gun where it is just fraud. Best case, she just runs a bloated organization that doesn't really do much of what it says it does. Anyways, back to the divorce and her cancer. The story I heard involved the weatherman kicking her out after the affair was found out when she had one of her bouts with cancer. The sportscaster took her back and took care of her, and when she got better, she left for the weatherman again. Personal **** like that shouldn't affect me politically, but there's just too much about her character and leadership that raised questions. ... More background, Jacksonville has a jungle primary for local positions. Everybody runs in March, if somebody gets 50% they win. Top 2 runoff in May. ... I answered a poll back in the fall asking me about the mayor race. At the time, believe it or not, of the five people, I said Daniel Davis. I have a MAGA friend who thinks I'm still right wing and gives me his endorsements. He called Davis a RINO around that time, and it piqued my interest. He wasn't perfect by any means. He was head of the Chamber of Commerce, and the young professional organization i was a part of in my 20's that was a branch of the Chamber was doing happy hours in December 2020, for example. On the other hand, the Chamber has been LGBT friendly, helped get the city vaccinated, pushed for confederate statues to be torn down, so at the time he wasn't too extreme at all. Of the other candidates, I have mentioned Donna (D). Leanna Cumber (R) was a councilwoman who was trying the right flank. She raised a lot of traditional R money, had some troubling negative ads. And when she tried to steer to the middle, she was sure to use her maiden name, Gutierrez. Al Ferraro (R) was the right wing wacko candidate. And finally Audrey Gibson (D) was a term limited state senator. I ended up voting for Gibson, despite a fuax paux a couple years ago that came off as antisemetic. Davis and Cumber had a very negative primary while Donna basically sat on the sideline. The negative ads between Davis and Cumber got to be a joke. Both calling the other woke and liberal, etc. I think they did eachother more harm than good. Once Davis made the final 2, he really went downhill. Aligned with some questionable right wing groups. Hosted some insurrectionists a couple weeks ago. I should note, my no vote was sent in early April. I may have swallowed my pride and voted Donna if I waited until election day. Donna ran a very positive campaign. Davis ran ads saying Donna was an anarchist because she attended a BLM protest. Also, google Kent Stermon. Easy to tie him to Davis. (VERY easy to tie him to DeSantis) I don't know how much of a Desantis rebuke this is. Davis was a lot closer with the incumbent Mayor, Curry. And there has been a definite schism between Curry and DeSantis for a while now. I don't know the origin. A notorious Curry-aligned campaign manager, Tim Baker, ran Davis's campaign. Baker is a definite rat****er who plays to the worst common denominator. DeSantis' endorsement of Davis was tepid at best. The smaller race, property appraiser, included a MAGA former state rep vs. a black city councilwoman. That seat has been Republican for as long as I can remember. The MAGA rep's street signs include a photoshopped picture of him with DeSantis. The fact that he lost is a bigger DeSantis rebuke, IMO. But still, the city council is 14R-5D (One R endorsed Donna). Five of those seats are city-wide, and all were won by R's (one decided yesterday). Still kind of hilarious Davis had a 4X funding advantage and lost though...

  10. I don't disagree with any of your assessments. He flashes some high end offensive talent, sometimes his vision and play-making combo is really fun to watch and he seems to have a pretty solid release on his shot. He'll probably stick in the power play specialist/third line sheltered minutes role at his peak which can be pretty valuable to a team if they don't overpay for it. But like you said, he drifts sometimes and I think that gets him lost in his own zone. At best with that, I think he can be invisible for large parts of games which is tough since you know he has the offense in there (but at least he isn't giving up chances?). I don't think he'll ever PK but I think I can envision him as a solid offensive minded third line winger if he finds more consistency in his game. From the "eye test" I didn't think he ever really looked completely outmatched or anything with his size. He was only a rookie playing 13 and a half minutes a night, and a good amount of his points were at even strength last season. I think there is hope he is still getting better at the NHL level, we'll see. But I'm pretty pleased with grabbing him in the second round of that draft specifically, tough to ask for more at this point. I will say, I thought he actually had more points than he did last season before checking, so I am probably higher on Beggren than people with more knowledge than me haha.

  12. If you're trying to find value in Joe Veleno's offensive game/point production in the NHL you're going to have a bad time. But outside of starting a majority of his zone starts in the defensive zone he's largely been a negative elsewhere too so I'm hoping he can round out his defensive game a bit to be a bit of a fourth line PK guy. I'm not sure many saw him being some offensive dynamo in the NHL which is why he was there at the second to last pick of the first. Honestly that 2018 draft really doesn't have a lot of talent outside the top 4. You have a couple solid guys in Dobson and Farabee who both went top 15, and Q. Hughes if you like that type of d-man. Otherwise it is just like... Sharangovich in the later rounds. Kurashev has been pretty good and some defensemen like Durzi are kinda intriguing. But overall that draft was meh.

  13. The last part is the important part to me, this isn't some 1 or 2 year thing, we are almost to the point where he has had more below average to terrible seasons with us than the great ones we remember.

  15. Tapia is a nobody. Kiermaier and Myers are not impact bats. Haniger was 32 and Conforto was an injured 30 year and they both signed with a team in a super cool west coast city that has a puncher's chance of making the playoffs. Are these guys you'd want to overpay in years and money to get them to come here to agree to come to a losing situation in Detroit instead? Nimmo is the only guy listed I believe could be reasonably hoped to lead a team into the playoffs. Would you really wanted to have signed him for nine or more years?

  16. I really don't know how much is just political reluctance by Biden vs US 3D level chess strategy vs a newly energized Europe, but as long as the right things do happen, then IMO having the US lurking more in the background than in a highly public lead can only have good long term consequences - both for how things play in Russia and future Euro integration of Ukraine.

  17. getting a little more background on this, spiting DeSantis certainly plays a big part, but there are apparently a few additional moving parts here, as you might expect in any big corporate move. One is that this development was not an Iger project, and when he inherited it he was not big on the idea a moving a chunk of the creative management talent away from the studio in CA. Disney is apparently also not thrilled with the increasing prospect of FLA allowing inceased Casino activity near Disney venues. So some additional parallel motivations.

  30. Back in the days when I golfed a bit, I had a friend who hit a low line drive off the tee and took out a bird (it wasn't a goose, probably closer to a starling or mocking bird that inhabited the course) After his shot he turned to his partner. "I told you I'd get a birdie on this hole"

  31. Fair points all around as usual but his slugging pct dropped a lot from 2019 and his defense was slipping also while his pay was increasing which made him a declining asset. I know I focus on this way too much but we tanked for so many years to get young controllable assets only to trade the best one away for a declining and now zero return. Plus the draft pick and extra salary cost seem to get overlooked but they are real assets. Especially sandwich picks. It would be nice to have third base settled for the next 5 years. And I do think Al panicked when Riley got hurt. His boss was publicly putting himself on notice and Al’s goodwill was running thin. Just my opinion.

  32. Lots of Monday morning QBing here I don't recall many posts of that. Most were OK trading for an all-star and didn't think it was just a panic move cause Riley got hurt. He had under a .600 OPS for us and most believed the trade was OK because we had Tork and Candy set to play the corners.

  33. and the other possibility - which would 'absolve' Tampa, and Avila too for that matter, would be if what has happened to Ausin is COVID related. Again - we don't know the details of his life history, but if this is something that he had no previous history with, some form of long COVID is as reasonable a speculative trigger as anything. IIRC he did have a pretty bad case didn't he?

  36. My father in law passed away yesterday from cancer, he was the finest man I have ever met. I will miss him. He was a huge Tigers fan and we went to a few games every year along with a few Caps games. He married his high school sweetheart and they were together for 59 years. He worked in sales and they kept him on until he was 78 years old because they knew they may have lost a few accounts if he left. My wife and I, and her brother, were going through pictures and scrapbooks for the visitation this week and found stuff going back to his youth. Just awesome stuff. His mother saved everything, we found pony league team pictures starting from when he was like 10 years old. And she saved numerous press papers of his baseball accomplishments. He was a very good player and would go on to coach Crestons baseball team for a few years. Attached are a couple of pictures of him from the newspapers that we found from the 50s. A side note, the news back then was much more local. Stories in the paper I saw were about a man who had his fence destroyed by an automobile. A depressed mother attempted suicide. And lots of stuff on high school sports. I know somewhere Al is young again and playing baseball. That is him on the far right in the team picture.
