Listen, if they lose this game against a Top 10 team on the road, can we not freak out? The Browns aren't better than the 49ers and the Jets aren't better than the Eagles. I don't think we're going 16-1. My Power Rankings. 1. San Francisco - A loss on the road....it happens 2. Miami - They are one QB hit away from being about #16. 3. Philadelphia - DId the Jets give everyone a blueprint? 4. Detroit - easiest schedule the rest of the way. 5. Kansas City - not the Chiefs, are they saving it for the playoff run? probably 6. Buffalo - when it's clicking it's impressive. Josh Allen gets too risky sometimes 7. Jacksonville - Really good and exciting young team that stumbled at first. 8. Baltimore - Jekyll & Hyde team 9. Seattle - 3 east coast games already 10. LA Chargers - if they had a better coach..... 11. Dallas - annoying in their false arrogance. 12. Cleveland - the defense is great, Watson limits them with injuries and his contract 13. Cincinnati - haven't been healthy yet, if they hang around, they could go to the Super Bowl. 14. Houston - this year's version of last year's Lions? 15. Tampa Bay - they really aren't that good. 16. Pittsburgh - they are as average as it comes 17. New Orleans - lucky to be in their division 18. NY Jets - team is hard to figure out 19. LA Rams - Still have some fight left. 20. Tennessee - This team is annoyingly mediocre 21. Indianapolis - There's potential here, how will Irsay screw it up? 22. Las Vegas - Josh McDaniels is lucky to have a job 23. Green Bay - they were never that good to begin with 24. Washington - the NFL would be better if they were good again 25. Atlanta - Desmond Ridder? yeah, right 26. Minnesota - Water finds it's level 27. NY Giants - They figured out they suck in the offseason 28. Chicago - Where will Fields be traded? Atlanta? 29. Arizona - Tanking for......um......Drake Maye? 30. Denver - Have to be good to be arrogant Sean & Russ 31. New England - It was Brady, it was always Brady (and the cheating) 32. Carolina - and they don't have their #1 pick next year. Yikes National TV is talking about Craig Reynold's block.2 points

I know some of those 2nd and 3rd down run plays can be frustrating but I look at them as body blows, you're just wearing down your opponent with each one and setting them up for later on. There's a reason we started picking up plays in chunks late in the third and early 4th and the was a combination of their defense getting worn down and them being cognitive of the run. To sum it up we all like to score on every possession but against a defense like the Bucs that just isnt realistic, sometimes you have to be methodical and play the long game and that's what the Lions did yesterday.2 points

It is worth pointing out Nick Maton OBP'ed .414 in AAA this year. Tyler Nevin .400. The pretacked ball, ABS, and rash of pitcher injuries across the sport really juiced the offense in AAA to the point that needs to be factored into any "translations."2 points

Of all possible outcomes, a Lions-Browns Super Bowl is the most amusing so it is the one I am rooting for.2 points

I’d like to send an appreciation to Alex Anzalone. Even with the modest contract extension he signed fans hated the move. He is having a phenomenal season and is clearly leading this defense. He is all over the field and is a sure tackler.2 points

I liked Casty when he was a Tiger, I liked him when he was a Red, and I like him on the Phillies. Just something about him clicks with me, and makes me appreciate him as a player and a person. Here he is explaining why Scooby Do is his favorite superhero. 🤣2 points

I think you're missing the point. 2nd and long runs are: a) to set up a 3rd down play; which could be play action, misdirection, or a pass, or even another run depending on circumstances. 2nd and long runs are not for the pleasure of fans; they are for setting up the defense the way an OC/ HC wants it to be set up. Quit complaining about 2nd and long runs and "key" in on 3rd down conversions. THAT's the key. Or conversion % if you're just looking at stats (during the game the conversions are more important.) b) They still: take heat off the QB/ eat clock/ keep it conservative if that is what is needed/ wear down a defense/ MAY even set up a play that is NOT in this series but later in the game, during a key drive/ etc. Just my 2 cents.1 point

this is true, but don't underestimate the fact that is is driven by shoppers willing to drive across town to save a dime on a product. Don't mistake effect for cause. To a substantial degree, consumers in America have gotten the market they demanded. Americans by and large won't pay the increment for marginally higher quality goods, so they don't get them. The the smaller market for the higher quality product then drives up its relative price because economy of scale is lost.1 point

I think I was concerned a little last year when he was set to possibly leave because it didn't seem we had an obvious heir apparent. I don't think that will be an issue this year if (when) he leaves. If I had to levy a guess today, I would put money on Tanner Engstrand being groomed for the role this year. He's gone from TE Coach to Passing Game Coordinator, which is the same progression Ben Johnson took before being named OC. It could be Scottie Montgomery or Steve Heiden though too. In any event, I'm sure they'll be prepared, and I agree that the Lions success on both sides of the ball, but particularly on offense, is in large part thanks to Campbell.1 point

My power rankings haven't changed substantially since the last time I did them, but comparing the Lions to other teams in the NFL, the only team I see that we really don't matchup well with are the Dolphins and a fully healthy Bengals team... maybe the Bills too. The top tier of the NFC (49ers, Eagles, and Lions) all played tough defensive matchups this week and were forced to play off-brand football. All three of those teams like to play bully ball, using their elite offensive line to impose their will on the ground, only going to the air to catch the opponent napping and change the pace. When the 49ers were forced to go to the air this week because of injury combined with the Browns defensive line, they struggled and ultimately lost. When the Eagles were forced to go to the air this week because of the Jets defensive line, Hurts threw three interceptions and they ultimately lost. When the Lions were forced to go to the air this week because of injury and a stout Tampa defense, they didn't miss a beat and still won by two scores. That's not to say we are Super Bowl bound or anything (though... maybe!), but both the 49ers and Eagles would almost certainly have to play a different brand of football against us. Ground and pound likely isn't going to go well against our defensive line, and they will need to rely on Purdy and Hurts to play a brand of football they usually don't need to. I like Goff's ability to go with the flow better and win the game with his arm, based off of what we saw yesterday. The Dolphins are the only team in that upper echelon of the NFL that really relies on the pass first and can stretch the field vertically at will. I think Tua (if he makes it through the full season) would have the potential to make the throws Baker missed yesterday, exploiting Will Harris and Jerry Jacobs with Tyreek Hill in ways that hasn't been done to this point. The Bengals, with a healthy Burrow, could probably do the same. At least one of Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase would give us fits if their offensive line gave Burrow enough time to find them. The Bills probably have the capacity to do this too, but they sure seem to be on the same track they have been the last few years, where it just feels like there is more untapped... I'm glad none of those three would be on the schedule until February.1 point

Campbell is the lynchpin in all of this, don't get it twisted. Goff's play actually started improving when Campbell himself took over playcalling. Not to diminish what Ben Johnson is doing and he's certainly a talented playcaller with a future as head coach but Coach MCDC is the one steering this ship.1 point

Baltimore is coming back from London. Teams used to often choose to take their bye in the week after an international game, but not so much anymore. I wonder if the jet lag and travel, going Pittsburgh -> London -> Baltimore in the course of about eight days will affect them.1 point

The Head Coach also fired that OC and hired the new OC. He will hire thr next OC as well. If that doesn't work he will make the necessary changes.1 point

A team also runs those run plays to: 1) Keep the defense off of the passer (so they're not pinning their ears back and teeing off on the QB). 2) Wear on the defense, as you've mentioned above 3) Set up future plays. Which don't even have to be play action. Simply getting a defense moving in the direction you want them to, because they've seen this line movement before. Oh WAIT! Ben just dialed up another trick play by moving the defense where he WANTS them to go and then going the Other Direction!!! 4) Run time off the clock. Etc. There's a hundred reason to run a run play and they are not all/ always to gain 6 yards a pop. The stream of invective towards Ben and these running plays is the most asinine thing I've ever seen. As if the complainant actually knew anything anyways.1 point

This stuck me this morning when I was coming in to work listening to a Lions podcast: The Lions by no means played a clean game. Some bad penalties... some drops from our receivers... running game wasn't there... only one sack... a missed FG... And yet we won, handily. We kept the Bucs out of the end zone, we had some big plays and we went into their stadium and beat them solidly. Even just a few years ago we often said that the Lions need to play a near perfect game if they wanted to beat [insert good team here]. We often said the Lions didn't have the luxury of making mistakes because the margin for error was so slim. We often said that something to the effect that if only the refs hadn't blown that one call we might have won. Now we're the team that others are saying that about. The Bucs needed to play mistake free football to beat us and they made mistakes. The Bucs margin for error was so slim that a few missed plays meant they lost by two TDs. I'm certainly not saying this is a Super Bowl bound team. But this also isn't the SOL. This is a team that can make mistakes, that can be missing key players and can still go into a visiting stadium against a decent opponent and come out with a win.1 point

Seriously, how many posts do you have complaining about Ben Johnson? If you don't like Ben, then you don't like ice cream. I trust Ben. He has proven himself to me.1 point

As much as some complain about his second down play calling, and sometimes I believe it leaves something to be desired, stats like this prove his genius. Lots of motion and multiple looks coming in one play design really throw defenses for a loop, make Goff productive, and continue to put points on the board. When is the last time we've scored less than 20 points in a game?1 point

I have a feeling you'll be saying that a lot on many future Sundays. Both a testament to how pathetic Lions history has been and how good this team is. A wild stat to me is that the Lions were 0-13-1 in Dan Campbell's first 14 road games and 7-1 in the last 8. Literally flipped a switch but we should have seen it coming because the Lions lost a whole crapload of close games not only early last season but the previous season as well so they were close and was only a matter of time until the dam broke and damn has it ever.1 point

Cade missed what? 18 games as a rookie. Start of the year he tweaked an ankle and missed a few games. That is basketball. He missed 4 played 1 missed one then was fine. The fact it didn't linger is encouraging. He missed 6 or 7 more for Covid, which has nothing to do with injuries. The remaining games were rest games basically due to his shin injury. He obtained that in high school and basically it has two methods to treat it. Continue to play and miss the occasional game when it becomes too bothersome. Or get the surgery and have it fully repaired. He originally wanted to rest and come right back. The Pistons pushed for the surgery but left it up to him. He talked to a few players that had the procedure done and was encouraged, so he got the surgery.1 point

Checked out a pawn shop during lunch yesterday and saw a black sparkle Squire Tele with dual humbuckers behind the counter. The clerk quoted me $176, so I asked to try it out. I immediately noticed that it had been smartly modded with Fender locking tuners, Graph Tech nut and string trees and an upgraded bridge. Played on it long enough to determine that it was solid, then bought it. When I got home, a quick check under the control plate revealed upgraded CTS pots and a Sprague Orange Drop cap, all well soldered with braided wiring. Seriously, the upgrades are worth almost as much as a stock version of this guitar, and whoever did the work knew what he was doing. The switch and pups appear to be stock, but it sounds pretty good, and for a sub-$200 guitar, I can justify upgrading them later. I love this thing.1 point
