  1. I wasn’t super familiar with him before today, but I really like what I’m hearing about him. Seems like a great hire.

  2. Today is the 12th anniversary of the Penn State Board of Trustee's terminating Joe Paterno's contract effective immediately, in the same meeting where University President Graham Spanier resigned rather than face termination of his own. But yes, this is the worst scandal in B1G history or something.

  3. $30 million less than Judge and he's six years younger. Why would he accept that? Is it really a good idea for Detroit to invest so much into one player again now that Miggy is gone? I'd rather have a good roster instead of one star.

  4. I'm glad Harris told Eduardo take the $49 million or hit the bricks. I don't want to see another five years of his flaky nonsense wrapped in declining performance into his mid 30s while on the Tigers. Let him go be somebody else's problem. I have confidence we can build a solid rotation of made up of standup guys without him.

  5. This morning "Hit The Road Jack" came on Sirius while driving and I was able to share a story with my daughter that still cracks me up to this day. A couple of buddies and I were riding motorcycles through Canada a few years ago and we made it to Manitoulin Island. We hadn't secured lodging and found this tiny roadside motel. One guy went into the office and paid and we discovered that the room wasn't airconditioned, the sheets were dirty and there were only two beds for three dudes. Nope. So we requested our money back so we could find something else down the road. The motel owner argued with us and offered to drag a cot into the tiny room. Finally he relented and, in the most Canadian way to tell someone to "F Off", he blasted "Hit The Road Jack" on his stereo at a very loud volume. I still smile thinking about it.

  6. that's easy for you to say about someone else's situation. Maybe his kids have friends they don't want to leave. Maybe his wife has friends. There's so many things within a family that can come up where a sudden move or absence can be traumatic. We simply don't know.

  7. It seems like it's gotten to the point where people throw out their own theories about why he did this or that and then we start talking about them as if they are true.

  8. Didn't see this one coming. I was kind of hoping for Len Casper, but Benetti will certainly do. I've heard a good deal of Jason Benetti over the past eight years and people here will like him, and not just because Shep (may I call him Shep?) set such a low bar. Besides his great voice, Benetti does have a love of the game he conveys in his local broadcasts, although to be clear, he did grow up a White Sox fan, so that may have contributed some to that. You have already learned that Benetti will not be around for every game, since he has national commitments. It was always my expectation he would leave the Sox and go 100% national, and he may still end up 100% national, but at least he'll be in Detroit for a couple of years along the way. I know his contract calls for “at least” 127 games, but if they were taking money on it, I would put my bet on exactly 127 games. Benetti has a sly, arch sense of humor that's not too grating, although on occasion it overstays its welcome. Some here may remember the game he did with Bill Walton a few years ago. That was nationally-reported, and it was exactly the joke you would expect it to be. (I'm not sure whether I should be surprised that Walton knows as little about baseball as he showed.) But the next game Benetti had Michael Schur, aka Ken Tremendous, in the booth with him, and that was an absolute joy to experience. Try to find some of it online if you can. Benetti is not a stats guy, but he's not unfamiliar with stats, either. He's not a stories guy, either, probably because he doesn't have that depth of experience in the game for so many stories. What he does have is a pretty quick wit and the ability to play off a more experienced or inside guy, like Steve Stone, in the booth with him. That's why I'm interested in seeing whom they pair with Benetti. I would be shocked if Kirk Gibson were to come back, as that would be like oil and water even if Kirk were at the top of his broadcast game. But I would not be surprised to see Craig Monroe get a lot of time on the air with Benetti, since Monroe is relatively young (and black, which counts for something in Detroit). If I had my way, I'd have Cameron Maybin as the main analyst, but he's probably too national for a regular local gig as well. Although, who knows, maybe they'll surprise me there, too. I've never liked the idea of a team’s broadcaster regarding his gig as a second priority (Boog Sciambi does, too, although I actually like it when he's gone from the Cubs booth). I guess I’m OK with Dan doing the replacement games when Benetti is out, and it makes sense, I guess, although I like Dan far more on radio. I’m guessing we’ll be hearing a lot more of Greg Gania in the booth this coming season.

  9. I hear fans blaming Cade and that's just wild to me. The dude had 33, 8, and 8. It's his third 30 point game of this season already. He carried the team in the 2nd and 3rd quarter until Sasser came in and lit it up in the late 3rd and early 4th. Also, the idea posted here that Cade should've stayed on the bench in favor of Killian is just bonkers. If you want to know what actually happened to lose this game: 1. On defense the Buck went to an aggressive zone that we couldn't score against. Why? Because it meant multiple defenders on Cade or Sasser as soon as they dribbled past the three point line. With no respected shooters the spacing was terrible and even when Cade got it to an open man they missed it (3 times in the corner for Stew and once for Ausar). 2. On offense the Bucks went to a high screen and roll with Dame and Lopez. We all know Lopez moves on every screen (not called) and if you touch Dame he throws his body into you and gets the call. But the bigger problem was the lack of adjustments from Monty - and this is the type of thing that Suns fans complained about. We continued to play drop coverage with Duren against the exact same offensive set over and over. Guess what? We got burned over and over because you can't play drop against Dame when he's cooking. He's either going to shoot an open three if the big drops too far or come at your big with a head of steam and get a foul call. You have to switch or trap the ball out of his hands and rotate defensively. That probably also means changing personnel to a faster lineup, which is how most big men get played off the court in the playoffs. Sure, Cade needs to clean up the turnovers, but let's look at the big picture here: Cade is currently 4th in usage across the entire NBA and averaging 5.4 turnovers (he had 5 last night). The other ball handler who's top 4 is Luka averaging 4.9 turnovers per game. The other two in the top 4 are big men and even they both average 3.7 (Giannis and Embiid). The 5th guy on the list? Durant averaging 4.3 per game. So let's not act like Cade is that far off from those other high usage guys. Yes, you'd like him to cut it down by 1 or 1.5 per game, but he's also working with no spacing, getting multiple defenders every time he touches the ball, and has just played the 85th game of his entire career. This loss was painful but Cade was actually one of the few bright spots, along with Sasser. In regards to Giannis getting booted, I hear people calling it weak and I don't understand that. He dunked the ball and then took steps towards Stew while staring directly into his face standing 6" from him. That's a Technical Foul all day long and has been for years. If they didn't call a tech that would've been some serious star treatment. Maybe people are forgetting that Giannis already had one tech earlier in the game so this was his second of the night?

  14. this guy will end up voting for Trump a third time because Dems will force him to, but still a good tweet Erick Erickson @EWErickson The GOP is no longer a national party. It is a collection of disparate regional parties. In some areas, the party wins by being tied to Trump. In some areas, it loses by being tied to Trump. What wins in pro-Trump areas and what wins in anti-Trump areas are incompatible, which means the party's coalition is unstable and unworkable nationally. It allows the Democrats, if they are more united, to win nationally against a party divided against itself whose base is chiefly motivated to funding and voting for one man and not the party or other candidates. The candidate is the cause whereas, for Democrats right now, the cause is the candidate embodied in whoever's name happens to be on the ballot.

  16. Where did people read that he didn't want to play in post-season games? He has pitched for 6 teams that made post-season and one of them even won the post-season tournament in 2018.

  17. I wouldn't either. But his accumulated wealth has also given him the ability to make the best choice as he sees fit for himself, whatever that may be. I am glad he opted out and am glad it appears there's no interest in having him come back. Let him be someone else's problem.

  19. But he won't go to LA for 2 months and pitch in the playoffs. Why would anyone want someone who doesn't want to pitch for a playoff team ? And don't say family. It's summertime, schools out and he can put them in a beach front condo for two months on his salary. That's a holiday. I am happy he is gone.We can do better.

  22. Luka and Embiid play with better talent than Cade does. That means more made shots for those other two guys which obviously means more assists. I like to look at the potential assist stat on NBA.com. Cade is 12th in the league for potential assists. He is also 7th in the league for secondary assists (hockey assist).

  23. Pretty sure me and Betrayer are related somehow. The Cade bashing is crazy to me as well. Yes he needs to improve and he will probably be the first to tell you that. But he is a stud. JEIII pointed out in his article today that last night was Cades 82nd game played. He is still so young in terms of time played. Regarding point #2 and what is so frustrating about it. I feel Duren has the mobility to trap and switch. So I don't really understand why they don't do it more. Like Betrayer said, guys that cant do that do not play come playoff time. So lets get him out there doing/learning it now. It is getting pretty hard to pump the brakes on the Sasser hype train. Not sure how Killian continues to start over him.

  25. Detroit’s three main problems this season have been discipline against mobile QBs, turnovers, and injuries. Three turnovers against Seattle and still Seattle had to go to OT to win it. One dimensional running game against Baltimore and timid play and play calling as a result. Detroit is still a step behind the top tier teams but could back in to the top seed in NFC then get CJGJ and Houston back for the playoffs in indoor stadiums. Then they have a chance against anybody. Also, Hurts is already dealing with a knee injury and they are going into a stretch of really tough opponents. QBs who run have a history of not making it through seasons intact.

  32. I think they work best when the other one is also on the field. They really have complimentary skills. Montgomery is going to be the "take the air out of the ball" back. If we get the ball up three with five minutes left, he is going to be the guy to deliver death by a million runs up the middle... Gibbs is more the guy you want to get in space. Runs to the outside, screens, designed routes, etc. Yet they can each do the other's skill as well (Montgomery catching passes, Gibbs going up the middle), and they can both block. In a drive with the season on the line, in an ideal world, I think you have Montgomery, Gibbs, ASB, LaPorta, and... dare I say it... Jamo? all on the field at the same time. With those five weapons, you can really pick your poison and, if you're taking care of the ball, you're going to move it downfield. Opposing defenses can't shut down the entire field, and that's what's open to you between those weapons.

  34. If Christie had actually been as governor the person he projects himself as now, he'd be more appealing. But with any politician I'm far more interested in 'what did you/have done' than 'what can you say that sounds good'. He did not cover himself in glory as the Gov of NJ and his rejection of Trump only after being rebuffed in his efforts to join the circle don't combine to paint a person who *acts* with nearly the level of principle he talks. That said, when it comes to the GOP the one eyed man may still be king in the land of the blind.

  40. maybe, maybe not. You really have no idea how much the AI will weight your correction compared to the thousands/millions of other inputs that go into its probability matrix. After all, you can't just program the AI to accept any and all corrections because it doesn't know if people might be mis-correcting it maliciously. And it's certainly not hard to imagine malicious actors, or even just market competitors, letting loose armies of bots with the express purpose of undermining the reliability of a targeted AI service. It we can think it up, you can believe someone is trying it as we speak....

  41. If Cade Cunningham weren't Cade Cunningham, Monty would have put Killian back in the game and tried to recapture the flow the offense had that went straight down the tubes when Cade came back in. It's terrible to watch a team double Cade all the way out to the time line and the Pistons don't have the movement, passing, or shooting to pick up the easy buckets that should be making available.
