  2. If this gets much more desperate, the league offices will be watching for trash-can lids on Tigers purchasing cards statements....

  3. That Fielder photo is one of my all-time favorite Tiger photos. I remember seeing it in the local paper and thinking how cool it was to have the slugger on the roof where he hit some of his most majestic homers. His first season with the Tigers was really special. Having a relative unknown coming to the Tigers and hitting 50 homers in an era when that just didn't happen was magical.

  4. there are a lot things killing baseball for youth but the biggest is just that they don't play it, and that I think, is due largely to factors way beyond anyone in the sports control - namely low suburban housing density and small families. You need a bunch of kids closely matched in age to have any chance at a sand lot baseball culture - and it just doesn't exist in many places in the US today. I grew up in a city with lots of 4 kids to a household houses on 1/8 acre lots. We could raise 15 to 20 kids across only a couple of grades to play ball everyday after school. We had 4 diamonds at our Jr high, and 3 more within 1/2 mile of there. There were all full most days. Then we all grew up and played intramural and city league softball. That's where MLBs current fanbase came from. And I doubt that is ever coming back. So all they are left with is trying to make the game more of a spectacle (ie. the HR), to make it entertaining for people who don't have the experience based vicarious identification to what is happening on the field. But it will be a different kind of fan with a different kind of relation to what they are watching.

  5. did you see the attendance? Pathetic. There is money to be made by facing up to sunk costs and putting a better product on the field.

  8. Not as your primary PG, but he can be the secondary handler and also be the lead guard when your main guy goes to the bench. At least, that's what I'm hearing/reading from the scouting reports. Of course, he'd have to guard the other team's PG on the other end due to his (lack of) size.

  10. I call oxymoron. There is no such thing as good process that produces consistently bad results. In pro sports the process can have no intrinsic value apart from its results.

  11. The best HR hitters go about 1 HR in 15 AB. A decent hitter carries a better than 250 BA, which is one in 4. If you are playing for more than a single to get Riley in and extend the game you are playing to lose. This is not an intelligent batting team - whether it's the players or the management, something needs to change.

  13. Now I know why I haven't gone in 7 years. It's not worth the effort. If they won't put it in, why should I This team's hitters approach at bats with all the enthusiasm of a middle school kid reciting the Pledge Of Allegiance. Had to clean my glasses when I looked at the giant scoreboard and saw Gio's OBP is only one point higher than his BA. -- and he was batting fifth. Kerry Carpenter - one of the few guys that actually give you any offense was batting sixth. Then the Javy problem. Why? Just why? Just find someone who can play short. Anyone. They couldn't do worse than this. There are times when you watch sports and you know when a guy is done and he's done. He's checked out. He got his money. Ooooh, he got a hit today. Still has an OBP under .200, right? Your defense better be Alan Trammel/Ozzie Smith to justify staying - and it isn't. Swallow the pill - blame it all on Al and move the **** on. I don't understand why people think Hinch is good. Yeah, he's good at going on runs when the team is all but eliminated from contention. He tinkers too much. He's Ausmus Jr. Gotta be the smartest guy in the room. Why does Riley need a day off. He's 23. Don't think you're gonna wear him down on a 70 degree day. I think he can manage. Oh yeah, it was a left-handed starter. Well, if Riley can't play against lefties, then he's not a real major league player, is he? A lot of school field trips there today. You probably didn't win over that generation playing like that. Casey Mize was great today - he made one mistake, just one. When the ball went over the fence the stranger next to me pretty much said, right along with me, welp, this one's over. Yep. I still have 18 days left on my current month of the Bally's app. Think I'm just gonna cancel after that. I can find better things to do. Not going to another game unless I get free tickets. Not worth the effort. Could have spent my day off work gardening or something productive.

  14. This sucks but what was really painful was back in the day when we had a future Hall of Fame hitter and a lineup filled with all stars who were befuddled when a AAA rookie came up and they couldn’t hit him because they had “never seen his stuff.“

  15. If the hitting coaches aren’t getting the job done, it’s a Hinch/Harris problem and it’s their job to resolve it.

  16. SSS theater...but Greene and Canha can't have a bad 15 days. Baez, Keith, Tork, and catchers have been so feeble that you need your best hitters to be great all year..but it's unrealistic. The real solution is to have more depth.

  17. But on the bright side, we have a really small payroll. Making huge money will keep the team afloat for years to come. And with the fast games, it's less time having to suffer through each game. Kinda like a fast root canal. 😅😅

  21. This is a thing Nikki Haley is STILL getting more than 20% in the primaries. That's not a good look for the guy who led the coup to overthrow democracy being the people's champion. Even if a lot of neck beards are upset about transgender astronauts.

  23. That's funny, because I'd rather trade Garland. Neither can play defense, but at least Mitchell can put the team on his back for a win or two. I guess nobody would want Garland's contract and that makes Mitchell easier to move with just one year (and a player option) left on his deal.

  24. That Dalton Knecht guy looks decent. Shooter with athleticism who can finish at the rim a bit. The knocks against him are he is bad on defense and he is old. He just turned 23, which is a year older than Cade. I just want to be able to post this after he has a good game.

  25. But I do have a problem with people like reactionary NFL owners wrapping themselves in the flag by fawning over vets in their venues to try to polish their 1%er PR while being generally destructive political forces towards the general welfare and even those Vets. That's not the Vets' fault of course, but it makes me cringe at a sporting event when it happens because of the subtext of what is really going on.

  26. and MSM reported remains ridiculous. Huge headline in WaPo this morning from W.VA that GOP chances of holding the Senate "SKYROCKET!" with the Jim Justice win. Sorry, no, the probability of the Dems holding W.Va didn't change at all last night, they changed the day Manchin announced his retirement and nothing last night changed anything at all. The Justice win was a completely foregone conclusion.

  28. All Pistons rumors should be taken with a giant grain of salt for the reason you stated, we have no idea who the decision maker will be.... unless Gores intends on pushing Weaver on to the next POBO in which case the Pistons are even more screwed than I ever imagined.

  29. Maggie Haberman's story is not unlike a lot of "serious reporters" who are compromised along the way. A bunch of serious reporters have been in the pay of the Russians with ( and without knowledge (dating back to the 20s). I would say a lot of Pentagon reporters are fully in the thrall of the MIC. But, this is right out of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies:

  32. Young fans don't like baseball because it's boring compared to sports like basketball and football. There is no way to make it as exciting as other sports without ****ing it up so much the fans they already have won't like it anymore. I think this is why they have always tried appeal to older fans by stressing history and tradition. You can't please everyone.

  33. And Kreidler doesn't have much more offense. No, Harris was saddled with Javys contract when he got here. And we don't know the details of whether he wanted to cut him in the off-season. Maybe Chris didn't want to eat his contract. Maybe he just couldn't swing a deal for a replacement. We just...don't know.
