  1. I don’t think Scott Harris would’ve come here if that were the case. But it is definitely the case that if we have five guys who end up being so good the Tigers have to pay each of them in excess of $30 million a year and some of them $50 million-$60 million (and the price goes up every year) there’s no way they will ever be able to hold onto them. So there will never be teams where we can get attached to players long-term like we did with the ‘68 era Tigers or the ‘84 era team. Baseball doesn’t work like that anymore for anyone besides three or four clubs. We live in an era of deplorable inequality and spectacles which keep the masses sedated in a sentimental La La Land that gets increasingly harder to feel sentimental about. The game is certainly losing its Ken Burns feel about it.

  2. If Jobe is going to be on the team at all this year then he’s going to start in Detroit. The potential draft compensation for rookie of the year is a big deal for smaller/mid market teams to compete. Now he might start in the pen to limit innings early on and let him learn big league hitters. Or they might skip a bunch of starts to do that which also means they need more cheap veteran depth.

  3. Just like with Dallas, the Lions have a score to settle with the 49ers. I expect the Lions to attempt to clown the 49ers.

  7. I just did a quick search to see if Detroit ever had any other Cobbs besides Ty. The answer is yes. Joe Cobb in 1918. He might be our moonlight Graham. 1 game, 1 at bat, 1 walk. OBP of 1.000.

  8. Our radio station broadcasted outside in the cold last Tuesday - Saturday in front of Kroger in Ann Arbor to raise money for Food Gatherers in Washtenaw. The effort raised the equivalent of 1.076 million meals (and counting). Passed our goal of 1 million. And it was really really cold this year, and it was worth the effort.

  9. If it's touched behind the line of scrimmage but still goes beyond the line of scrimmage, it's no different than a shanked punt. So AO touching it is no different than it being muffed by the return man.

  10. Once it goes past the line of scrimmage, it's essentially treated as a punt. If no one touches it, it's Dallas's ball wherever it lands. Since a Dallas player touched it, it's a live ball like it would be on a muffed punt.

  11. Call me insane, but with all of the struggles going on in the country, it’s getting really hard to read about the amounts of money high level baseball players are getting now. I’m all for them getting theirs….but good grief.

  12. Is not being able to sign the top free agents that big of a problem for many clubs? I am not sure it is. An unintended consequence of these guys going for such big money to just a few teams is you take an unwise option off the table for most teams, something they might be happy about. Under a cap maybe Soto is within range but it would still be for a deal the signing club will wish was off the books for a good chunk of it.

  15. I don’t disagree but it is a factor and my guess is that it would be a consideration. So if you think he’s going to be one of your top 4 starters by the middle/end of the year. Then imo he might as well learn in the big leagues. if you don’t think that will be the case because he’s still green and you can hold off until September again then sure let him get the innings in the minors. To me his stuff plays now in the majors and pitchers only have so many innings in three arms. I’m taking him north even if it’s out mid the bullpen to start. With the condensed minor leagues now there is a huge talent gap between AAA and the majors that I don’t think it’s as good of a place to get ready anymore.

  19. Why not? The group needs to learn to win at some point, and nobody is paying a 1st for Beasley anyway so might as well keep him for the season and try to extend him, he's only 28.

  20. As of today, that's what I see as our starting rotation. Jobe will probably start in Toledo, unless there are injuries. But he should be up here, in June at the latest. As for signing another SP? I would rather sign a closer who can miss some bats. Sign JV and make him our closer...😅😅

  22. Yankees-Dodgers-Mets every year with a couple others popping up from time to time. That's all it's gonna be. Maybe we get lucky and get in for a year or two. The Pirates will be ordinary with Skenes and then trade him to the Dodgers, Mets or Yankees.

  23. The key to success in the future will be to ID guys early and tie them up before they know how good they are. i.e. Colt Keith type signings. Of course you need to be right. OTOH, you can make a couple of $20M/yr mistakes and still be ahead of making one $50M mistake.

  24. When the No Name (That's How I'm Feeling) single came out, our station and WDET were the only one that played it around here. WRIF and Alt 98.7 didn't touch it that first week. That first week it was not on Spotify, it was not on You Tube and not available to buy -- the only place you could hear it was on the radio and they totally blew it. We banged it and made a big deal about it. And the thing that is so ironic is that they both ended up putting it in rotation. Because neither station is programmed in Detroit by someone who knows Detroit. Both of those stations suck and don't pay attention. Couldn't make an exception. Couldn't break that playlist sent by corporate. It's garbage.

  28. He wasn't terrible in 78 PA agasint LHP in '23, 657 OPS but a 333 OBP. Last season he did pretty much nothing in only 32 AB. Considering how bad our RH hitters were I'm not sure why Hinch didn't give him a little more run to see what he could do. It's definitely an issue, if you only always play to the short term platoon advantage with a given hitter, then it does pretty much become a self-fulfilling situation that he's not going to get any better at handling same side pitchers, and sooner or later he's going to have to face one when it matters or at the least you will have to make a substitution you don't want to.

  33. Ok now can we get some reality in the post please. The Mets or dodgers tv contracts haven't changed in years. Give you a guess what has changed. The big markets tv deals aren't the ones that are gonna price the Tigers of the market. Thier profit this year was second best. It's chris didn't spend. Not saying he had to go crazy but pumping skubal by even 30 million doesn't erase those profits and that doesn't include the bump in tickets and merchandise from seemingly fielding a better team with him on it. We spent only 38 percent payroll to revenue so there is plenty of room for growth. We probably can't do 4 700 million guys. But one or two.skubals isn't a problem for teams of detroit's market size.

  35. I should probably also mention that decades ago, growing up in the Bronx, one of our childhood summer activities. (unbeknownst to parents)was playing subway tag. In the Bronx, a lot of the stations and tracks were actually above ground, not below ground, and I can definitely remember riding with my friends in between the cars with 1 foot on the step for one car and the other foot on the step for the other car and looking down. . It was great fun.

  37. We were on the subway a little in Manhattan. While I’m sure I don’t understand the enormity of it, it was quite a thing to me. I hadn’t considered the connections and the crossings of North-South lines with East-West lines and how that would require another staircase to traverse in the same station, but, sure, that makes sense when seeing it. I don’t recall seeing much of a police presence in the underworld, but I can’t say I was looking out, either. But we’re noobs, so what do we know? We did manage to not pay attention and boarded a train with what is probably safe to assume was someone that was homeless. He was unkempt, sleeping on sets with a blanket over him, and had a small grocery cart with him. Of course we didn’t realize it until he doors closed. Ah, here’s a fun subway story. It’s me, my wife, and our 13 year old daughter. We get down to an already stopped train unsure if we should take it. My wife suddenly climbs on after we hesitated. Doors close before my kid and I can get on it. A lady noticed it, and had a look of horrified confusion on her face. I don’t think she saw me, so I think she thought my kid was left by herself. So, OK, my kid and I wait for the next train. Train shows up, I’m still not sure that’s the right direction. I’m fumbling with my phone, my kid moves towards the train, and I just grab her with my other hand. “Nope, either we board same time shoulder to shoulder or I make you hold my hand.” Then my wife and I connect on the phone. She went the wrong way, she’ll board the next one going the right way, we’ll meet at the destination. Ok, fine. The kid and I board the next train going the right way. Doors close, train starts moving. We’re at the rear of our car. I look at the next car and the wife is sitting at the beginning of that car, paying absolutely no attention to the kid and I banging and waving at her.

  40. He isn't untouchable. But you would have to overpay me to get Ivey. He still is not a good defender. But you can see the effort is there and good coaching can turn that into a viable defender. I would be shocked if he isn't a plus defender in a couple of years. BTW, Cade is shooting 39% from three. These two can definitely play together.

  41. Yeah. That is a nice chunk of change for a team looking to dump salary. The site says the same thing happens next year. If he is on the roster on 1/10/26 then his deal for 2026-27 is guaranteed. So even if they don't do it this year, they get another shot next year. The multi-year view on Spotrac is what I'm using. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/detroit-pistons/yearly
