  1. Gleyber Torres was only 17 years old in 2014 when I saw him playing for the Boise Hawks in the Northwest League as a part of the Chicago Cubs organization. He was the youngest player on the team, and he looked more refined than everybody else playing. He actually looked like a major league player in the field. At that level of play, you simply hold your breath when a ball player throws the ball to first base since you expect them to throw wild or bounce it and he was right on the money. He was honestly breathtaking for this level of play. I don’t know about his general deficiencies as a major league player but this move still makes me happy.

  3. I've seen enough engineers fail because they didn't have the communication skills to make their case. I always told students who thought their engineering tech comm requirements were wasting their time to remember that to get the money to do any of the things they wanted to achieve technically they would in 90% of cases have to persuade a non-technical person to give it to them. That argument sometimes seemed to strike a chord.

  5. This! And I will also say you don't set your roster at the end of spring training. It's always fluid.

  6. If Torres bounces back they could give him a qualifying offer and get a draft pick next year instead of flipping him at the deadline.

  7. bat: great approach, crushes LH pitching money: great baserunning: not great but can be fixed defense: ugh risk: little not a perfect fit, but they are better today than they were yesterday

  8. I’m definitely not calling for everyone to learn about poetry in particular. I was riffing. Diversity in education and humanities are valuable for the technical.

  9. Ok Harris, how about Kim, Yates and Sasaki next?

  10. From pitching chaos to infield chaos, nice! Spring training will be interesting.

  11. Torres is getting one year 15 million according to Petzold, so that makes the deal a bargain and shouldn't prevent them from making other moves. That makes me like the deal more.

  12. Keith back to 3B makes the most sense. No need to sign stupid Bregman

  13. At least they didn't have to give up Boyd to get him! I am neither excited nor unhappy with this move. He has a career 112 OPS+ as a middle infielder and crushes lefties and he's just 27, but his fielding numbers are bad. It will be interesting to see where everyone plays in the infield.

  14. I hope this doesn't come off disparaging, but i'm playing off the well rounded aspect of education that goes along with some of this immigrant talk for technical jobs. My company, like most, have outsourced a lot of our IT (in fact we offshored, then outsourced the offshored, and then sold many to HCL). Anyway, for the past 10 years, getting any new application up and running has been more difficult as we're working with Indians. If you put a clearly defined and specific goal in front of them, they are fantastic. Very technical. But prior to the offshore, we could take our idea and work with IT where they would be able to help us develop and brainstorm exactly what an end result could look like and also give us feedback on what is needed from us to help get to that point. So now every project, regardless of how small it is, gets a project manager that essentially just breaks down every tiny little thing into very specific things and it's on the PM if something breaks to figure out. I'm going on too long here, essentially they aren't good at understanding the vision of the final piece and figuring out how to get there. To me, that's not a culture thing, that's a result of not having a well rounded education.

  15. And I think you can call him out for his crap, as I and others have done in this thread, while thinking that 37/40 is better than 0/40.

  16. I don’t know all the crimes of the commuted sentences but the line he is probably using, as Vegas pointed out, is that the federal death penalty is justified in acts of terrorism both against a nation and against a category of people. I don’t have a strong opinion on it. I personally don’t care what happens to these people. I am against the death penalty but unless I see some kind of unfairness in the death prosecution I don’t shed any tears.

  17. You took the words right out of my mouth. The conservatives want to blame the unions for a problem that is a societal one. Conservatives need a bogeyman. Someone to blame. Whether it’s the teachers who only do that job “to get summers off” or “welfare parents” having too many kids and not feeding them. As I said elsewhere they don’t want to deal with problems.

  18. None of these should cost much in terms of years and annual salary and draft compensation. Kim is probably looking at a shorter term deal given his injury recovery. I would think 2 seasons would work. He may not be ready for opening day, and that’s fine. Something likely occurs by the time he’s ready to return. Injury, demotion, trade, something will happen. Yates fits because he’s an end of game option and won’t command many years either. Maybe a couple of seasons here as well? Walks are a smidge high for me, but maybe the pitching brain trust has the salve for that. Sasaki still seems like a pipe dream. But, anyone please correct me if I’m wrong, the Tigers are in position to offer him towards the higher end right off of the bat? Maybe that means he’d take that as a shorter term deal at highest possible in order to build his MLB resume for a higher payoff later? I don’t know. I suppose of the trio, Kim and Yates seem most valuable. While I think signing Sasaki would be great, I think the Tigers have proven they can create some SP value out of a reclaimed arm.

  19. I'm going to be honest, I don't think the world's richest person has the interest of the average taxpaying Americans (including people like myself) at heart. I think he has his own interests at heart. And to the extent his blue ribbon commission recommends anything, his interests will guide his proposals. He doesn't care about any of us

  20. Elon Musk clearly isn't a significant figure in Trump's orbit and only crazy liberals think he's the power behind the throne. Also, Trump's most signature accomplishment will be the thing headed up and branded by... Elon Musk. Some interesting logic going on here 🤔

  22. Wow! That was a game! If you would've told me that they'd have a better win % in December than November when looking at the schedule a couple months ago I would've told you to lay off the drugs. Cade better be an All-Star lock. @Deleterious I'd call it 6 on 3 because Duren might as well be playing for the other team when he's on defense most nights. The defensive rating is 120 when he's on the floor and 111 when he's off the floor. That's an insane 9 point swing. It's not because Stew has turned into prime Ben Wallace either, because it's the same story when you put Reed in there. Pretty much any way you slice the numbers, they're better when JD is on the bench. And on the other end, his high turnover percentage isn't helping the offense either.

  23. Harris and Hinch stressed culture and character considerations when adding players to the organization. Torres doesn’t impress me here. Apparently he refused to play 3rd base with the Yankees and was benched on an occasion or two for lack of hustle. I’m hoping that he will take advantage of the chance to redeem himself across several performance metrics and impress with his attitude.

  26. Especially for what he is asking for. I approve Torres at 1/$15MM over Bregman at his current ask. I also think the Org internally knows how Keith's shoulder is doing currently and is comfortable moving him to 3B, with Vierling getting some time there. Lefty-Righty as need. And that moves Jung back to 2B, where he was a better player. So Torres is a stopgap until Jung is ready... and tehy may both be on the team at some point which is, again... Righty-Lefty, as needed. Still need some longer-term balance on the Right side. Which brings us to... Tork will have to prove he can be better than he's shown. At the plate and in the field. Or he will be broomed out... I would say he needs to prove to the team he has some staying power in Detroit by the trade deadline. Or else...

  27. the bears were 4-2 and had just blown out jacksonville before the bye, albeit with the easiest schedule in the league. they were about to be 5-2 with games against arizona and then new england at home when the hail mary happened. that one play changed the entire trajectory of their season. following that game the whole narrative changed. i would argue that their schedule would have eventually caught up with them, but not in a way to see them as a 4 win team. theyre probably a 7 or 8 win team. but this really is one of the worst run organizations in the nfl; continually hiring overmatched GMs and head coaches. theyve been even worse after they fired eberfuls because the team just doesnt have a lot of talent, especially in the trenches. lets see what kevin warren will do. i think he's an empty suit. he's done nothing but talk loud since he got here. the stadium deal is no closer to being done and the team is a disaster. he should fire the gm and start over. we shall see if he does or if the mccaskeys still run the show.

  28. The roster is already constructed to basically turnover this offseason and next with how the contracts are. I wouldn't mind them getting anything they can for older guys these next two seasons, but they definitely aren't going to make the playoffs and I think a "blow up" will just happen naturally by not re-signing expiring deals these next two offseasons (or I hope). If I were to play armchair GM.... this offseason let Kane, Fischer, Petry and Motte walk. Bring over ASP, bring over/call up MBN and/or Danielson. Throw a bunch of money at Mikko Rantanen. Look to sign someone like Dante Fabbro as ASP insurance if he needs to go to the AHL to get used to ice size. Trade Lyon before the deadline this year and then call up Cossa in the offseason. Next offseason after that, let Tarasenko, Veleno, Chiarot, Holl and Gustaffson walk elsewhere. Sign Edvinsson to a long term deal. Hopefully Mazur, Wallinder and maybe Buium are ready for a taste of the NHL. Maybe this upcoming draft we get a really good player that could be in the mix. Pray one of Karpizov, Connor, Necas, Eichel, or Kempe hits free agency especially if we don't sign Mikko Rantanen last offseason. Sign a defender or two to ~2 year deals, hopefully with a more emphasis on playing defense. Make Cossa the starter.

  29. I think signing Gleyber means Javy won't be able to play. I do love these one year prove it deals. It's worked well with pitchers and now a young fielder could show Detroit is the place to sign these deals.

  30. I am sure Hinch has the infield plans all mapped out and it's probably not going to be as simple as putting Torres at 2B and moving Keith to 3B. There will likely be a lot of moving parts. Ultimately, they have improved their offense, but their infield defense is poor.

  31. The Tigers have needed a 3rd baseman ever since Harris took over and let Candelario walk. He got Vierling, a decent player but not All Star caliber. Another 2nd baseman in our system? Options around the infield? Maybe at 2nd base but we still need a RH bat for either 3rd base or RF. And SS is a question mark. We didn't sign Torres to fill a need, 2nd base was covered. We signed him because he was available. Let Hinch figure it out.

  32. This is what supporters of fascism do: they accuse their enemies of the very things they engage in, or plan to engage in very shortly. They project. Trump's red hats went all in on that years ago. Once they start accusing everyday people who didn't vote for Trump of trying to literally genocide their conservative neighbors off the planet, that's when it's going to be time to make a decision about fighting or fleeing. Seal's been broken already at the top—all they have to do now is push the rhetoric down to neighbor level.

  34. I don’t know where Vivek is going. I can’t see him doing that without some kind of vetting if he wants to be part of maga. Is this related to Musks tweet as well? That was kind of racist, he implies physical differences in people. I don’t see much of anything wrong with what Vivek wrote. But I took a gummy tonight and have had a beer. But he seems to contradict the whole “college is stupid” argument that’s taken hold on the GOP in this Joe Rogan world.

  35. If a team is involved in extra inning games all year and then wins by one-run in regulation, it's still a small margin even though it's cleaner than an extra inning victory. 49.9% of voters voted for Trump. 48.4% voted for Harris. It is more decisive than winning the electoral and losing the popular vote, but it is not a big margin.

  38. bottom line from I have gathered is that in MI the charter schools in economically stressed areas don't do enough better than the public schools to believe they have any kind of core solution. The problem with urban schools - aside from often being tied to crumbling century old infrastructure, is the students. And the problem with the students is the social situation and to fix that you need better employment and security for about 15 yrs. The turnaround needs money, persistence and some level of political agreement on policy, and at least one of those always seems to be missing.

  41. I'll give you my answer. I disagree with the death penalty. I don't think the state should have the power to execute its citizens. 37 out of 40 isn't perfect but it's better than nothing. And if those three are the ones that didn't make the cut...lets just say I'll whistle past the gallows without losing much sleep.

  42. There is always going to be a lot of risk and uncertainty when you sign a good free agent. If you ever want to sign a top free agent, you'll have to take that risk. A lot if is timing. Some people think the Tigers aren't ready to take that risk because they aren't yet in a position where one one player is necessearily going to make the difference. On the other hand, they have two more years of the best pitcher in baseball, so maybe now is the time.
