Way back in the day, I was a fan of GHWB, and George Mitchell was the Democratic Senate Majority leader in opposition. And Mitchell would drive me crazy because he could calmly, analytically take apart many of the positions of the administration and most frustrating of all was that he did it without lying about the facts. Of course the truth he marshaled in his arguments were the pieces of reality that best supported his case, but they were pieces of reality none the less, you couldn't just point to Mitchell and dismiss him because anything he said was not true. So I was always impressed by what an effective adversary he was in the process. And of course he went on to succeed in the Herculean task of moderating the Irish peace talks, exactly because he was a man whose honesty was accepted by all sides. So how naive was all that? Today we know the most effective opposition is just make up anything up that sounds good, fits the 'narrative' and you know your side will love to hear. Then let your captive media segment amplify it across the world wide infosphere, into received wisdom, and you can win your case before the truth even finishes its morning yawn.4 points

Best strategy is to kick off to start the game and recover the fumble on the return. Best of both worlds. 7-0 Eagles.2 points

And it simply doesn’t matter today to half the voting populace who is right and who is wrong, factually, in a debate. The facts of the issues don’t matter anymore in terms of changing votes.2 points

Another possible take is that JV didn't want to come back to the scene where he was such a dominant pitcher knowing he was no longer likely to be that guy but that that's what the fans would be expecting. Maybe less potentially disappointing for all concerned to just pitch somewhere that he could do the best he has left without the baggage. Add to that that JV is chasing stats (total wins) and there may be no manager in baseball less likely to help you do that than Hinch.2 points

Embers are being sent 2 miles away. You can’t fight that. Bitching about fire departments is like telling people in Florida “well if you just put up a few more sandbags….” At some point nature will win regardless of what you try to do and you just have to wait for it to stop.2 points

now this is more like it! all of us who trashed yzerman - me included - maybe we need to tske a step back? i dont really believe that for this offseason (which was awful), but maybe the idea of bringing in vets like chairot, compher, copp to play with young draftees was the right choice after all? and for those of us who clamor for larianov or fedorov or some new hot coaching prospect, maybe all they needed was a little old fashioned recycled hockey coach speak and not some analytical based new hotness? interesting run. hope they can keep it up.1 point

How much did the Pack sign him for? $50 million per year for 4 years? They're screwed. 😅1 point

I think the theory of deferring does come out of an era when the probability of scoring on any given possession was low and idea was the team comes out of the locker room a little too charged up for offensive precision, while the same is good for defensive pursuit. But offenses are so good today and you see enough games with only a couple or maybe even zero punts, that 'giving away' that 1st possession probably does make less sense than it used to.1 point

Packers went 12 rounds with the Lions, beat the Seahawks by three scores, demolished the Saints, then curled up into a ball and died.1 point

Good post, looks like a lot of work. People who are for deferring think it's so good to get back to back possessions, at the end of the 2nd quarter and the start of the 3rd quarter. First off, it's rare to get the ball last in the 1st half. Secondly, it's even more rare to score on both such possessions. All game long, defenses are fighting to get a turnover, they want to get the ball. To just give up a possession seems illogical to me. But I guess it's just a matter of opinion. My opinion or just a wrong opinion. 🤣🤣1 point

Since I'm endorsing him that surely means his career is probably doomed now but I gotta say in the handful of times I watched him this year Bo Nix has really impressed me. Not even the statistics just his demeanor and poise out there, doesn't come across as a rookie at all. Of course he played like 10 years of college ball so that could be why. lol1 point

Did a family trip to the area this Summer. Crossed the Bridge everyday from the gilded suburbs by Muir Woods NP where the wife picked out an insanely awesome VRBO house. I can definitely see the appeal if you have cash. We were mystified by the economy of the boutique town of Mill Valley. I would put our drive down to Monterrey and back on the PCH as a bucket-list quality drive. Because this is a great album and a great drive combined: enjoy1 point

Do other fan bases hang onto their aging stars the way Detroit sports fans do? If Harris/Hinch thought Verlander would help the team more than Cobb would, he'd be a Tiger. I want my FO making decisions based on what they think makes the team better as opposed to feel-good fan service.1 point

I'm relieved that Carlos Monnorez picked against the Lions to win SB. He has a track record of being a bad picker.1 point

A quote I grabbed off the Internet from the podcast — "Verlander... he puts his headphones on from the time he opened his car door to the time he got in... It's not intimidating, just more of like not as approachable as a guy like Miggy... The more I got to know Ver, we developed a coll little bond but Miggy was more approachable, but he was a jokester.” I’m wondering if JV is like this all the time or only on the days when he pitches and he’s hyper focused on staying in “the zone.”1 point

Was it that he was a difficult teammate or that he just didn't like to be talked to on his game day? I remember hearing the latter, but not necessarily the former.1 point

But he works in the diesel industry. Next time let’s talk to someone who works in the ladder industry.1 point

When he was in his prime, the scoring was extremely limited. When you look at his numbers in 1967 .282/.389/.835 with 20 HR and 1968 .263/.366/.835 with 25 HR - for that era, that was impressive and he played in 155 games each year too. Someone had to Catch that 31 game winner. But again, he wasn't a very "exciting" player. Just a very consistent and reliable one. 3 Top 10 MVP finishes, and if his own teammate didn't beat him out in 1968, he might have had a better shot. He's a lot like Whitaker that way. Always good and incredibly durable too. 5 Gold Gloves. 11 All Star Games.1 point

They’re still a flawed team, so the loss isn’t a shock. But agree with you on not giving up on a comeback. They were down a good margin late but never packed it in.1 point

It is ironic that Baines apparently got in on longevity only, yet as Lee points out, Whitaker doesn't get a nibble. I heard it said LaRussa had lobbied hard for Baines - I have no idea how much influence that accounted for. After Sparky passed there certainly wasn't anyone in ranks of Tiger management or FO with the stature to have much influence on voters - at least until Dombrowski, and I don't remember anything about DD being interested in Lou's HOF cause. I don't know where the cut off should be, or if there needs to any kind of strict one, but I think we almost go overboard with cumulative counting stats now. I think if a player clearly dominates his position for 7-10 years that's a memorable and impactful player and I have no problem with players like that being voted in - which is exactly what should have gotten Freehan in.1 point

💯 I’d be very happy if Bregman never played for Detroit. At the same time, $30 million on two reclamation projects isn’t what I had in mind when the FO was discussing making the team better. I’d hope we’ll have more to show for this offseason than what we have to date.1 point

My Amazon Photos app does a "this day in history" kind of thing and 4 years ago I took some screen shots of tweets where a guy made the case for Chet Lemon and the HOF. He's got a decent argument. Not saying he should be in but given the amount of attention others get I think he should also be in those discussions. He was better than we remember relative to the other CF's. Start from the bottom picture. I couldn't control the order.1 point

Sabathia belongs. Whitaker belongs too. Being private does not help, but I think the main reason Whitaker is not in the Hall of Fame is because he never had an elite season which is what people remember. I don't believe there is any other player with 75 WAR who never had huge MVP or near MVP season. What he did have was more very good years than almost any middle infielder ever. His consistency and durability was truely remarkable and Hall of Fame worthy.1 point
