I think I have mentioned this before, but the reason I don't follow the NHL or root for the Red Wings is because I lived in an area that got WJR but not the backup station in the 90's (CKLW?). The Tigers only lost WJR priority when the Red Wings were in the playoffs, so naturally I rooted against them so I could listen to the Tigers.4 points

So, next time someone sends a 'hilarious babylon bee' article ask them about the first amendment right of free assembly. Or just tell them this guy says Ashli Babbitt was a suicide.3 points

FOMO is part of it, which is true for most trends in investing. The weak dollar is definitely another part of it. The dollar is off by about 10% since Trump took office. Flight to safety is another big driving force. People think the market is due for a downturn. Treasuries would be a normal spot to park money coming out of the market. But the president is on TV every other day demanding the Fed lower interest rates. Lower rates equal lower yields on treasuries. So some people are turning to gold. The odds of a shutdown also went up this weekend after the shooting. Democrats will not pass any funding bill that includes funding for ICE, where they probably were going to before this weekend's events. A more simple answer. Lack of confidence in US fiscal policy.3 points

edvinsson is a big, young, strong actual defenseman. hughes is a forward playing defense. edvinsson should be able to be re-signed by detroit for long term. hughes is not signing and is likely to leave than to stay. hughes is a great player, but edvinsson's development combined with the uncertainty about re-signing hughes would make me balk at including edvinsson in any deal. i'd rather have edvinsson than zeev buium too.2 points

I mean, in his debut game in the league he blew out Matt Patricia and essentially exposed him as a fraud and a terrible coach right from game one. So he did us a Lions fans all a favor there.2 points

I go by charts. It's hard to explain in a short paragraph what they mean. Using charts, known as technical analysis, is a long time science that started over in Japan many years ago. Charts are a visual history of how "things" trade - price. One of the main things they do is give the people in the market entry/exit points to trades. They talk about this every day on the business channels. It helps both institutional and retail investors. The best computer geeks on the planet who work for the pigmen of Wall Street write their HAL 9000 trading algorithms on this stuff. My point, some charts look normal, and then there are some that don't. Gold and Silver look like hockey sticks right now - that isn't how it works. They are going up way to fast way too quick. It kind of reminds me of back in...2007 ish... crude oil did the same thing. Went from..don't remember, around a hundred maybe to $147. It looked like a hockey stick on the chart. It became exponential. Then it was 2008 and we know what happened. Some economists think the oil shock started the credit/housing mess. I think they are right. The gold/silver thing is different. American's sucks up 20% of the worlds crude, which is our lifeblood of growth. Gold and silver isn't near as important of commodity. But a message? The gold/silver (they usually trade about the same way even though silver has industrial value) thing is about our currency. The value of the dollar trades on the world markets each and every day. Like going to Canada and the exchange rate you get. So many dollars buys so many CAD. One might say (well, many) going long Gold is shorting the currency of the United States. This topic has been argued forever in the political realm between the Keynesian's and Von Mises wings of monetary policy. The "gold bugs." Some say this is all retail moving the price. I don't know. The old intrinsic value of an asset or "specie" as they said before that kind of thing. What I do know, this ain't normal.2 points

Agree. And what’s he to do? Just get rid of them? If he had any better options he would have done it. Might as well play the cards you had.1 point

It isn't even accurate, from the Homeland Sec website: “In President Trump’s first year back in office, nearly 3 million illegal aliens have left the U.S. because of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, including an estimated 2.2 million self-deportations and more than 675,000 deportations.” And that number is just 20251 point

Nor were the Canucks an unstoppable juggernaut with Hughes (plus EP+Boeser+Hronek)1 point

In a complete vacuum would I swap Edvinsson for Hughes? Sure, you would be dumb not to. But there are so many other considerations that go into this. The trade wasn't a one for one swap, there was a lot of value in addition to Buium in Rossi and a first round pick going the other way. Edvinsson is 4 years younger and is a restricted free agent after this season, with a projected long term deal at 7 years $7,700,000 per that I've seen. Hughes wouldn't commit to a long term contract (or couldn't? I never really looked into it) and he's a free agent after next season looking at a $12-14 million per year or more extension. So you're risking a guy walking for nothing, and if you do get him signed it is going to be at a significant cost of your cap space. Edvinsson has shown he works incredibly well with Seider on the top pair. He seems to be well liked by his teammates and coaching staff. I feel like I see him getting better and he seems to work hard. I am more than fine betting on his situation here. Especially when the Wings would still need to go out and get defensive help for the third pair imo. Swapping Hughes in for Edvinsson isn't going to completely alleviate that this season even if you force feed minutes to Hughes. And it isn't like suddenly the Wild are some unstoppable juggernaut with Hughes as they've gone 11-5-5 so just a game over .500 counting wins and losses. Somehow got spanked by the Devils and Jets back to back. So I reject the notion that this is the only way to navigate the current successful season.1 point

The other thing. Gettysburg was unquestionably favorable terrain for defense. Minneapolis with its very diverse population and scandinavian backbone seemingly not a place to be rude and unfriendly to people.1 point

Fascinating analysis. The Union did more than win the battle, they created narratives of resistance and success they didn't have before. Antietam was one thing. Gettysburg and Picket's Charge was the 'high water mark' of the Confederacy.1 point

The nerd who judges such things on the internet https://www.youtube.com/@CityNerd Says Detroit is actually doing a great job lately. Detroit's positive growth probably has many fathers and you can't ignore the individual hipsters who choose to stake out a claim on the inner frontier but, the lesson of so many other places with transit is that if you build it, the PE and REIT dollars will come. Even if they don't know why those dollars are coming. They just do. They have to go somewhere. Here is his love letter1 point

people love to bitch about the people mover and Q-line, which admittedly are poor shadows of what urban transit should be, but in the land General Motors you have to start somewhere.1 point

another piece just came across my inbox about the bond markets from Axios/Bloomberg, pointing out a big shift in what is happening in Japan. Interest rates are finally starting to rise there - the long period of deflation ending. This is affecting bond markets everywhere, including the US, because the large carry trade out of Japan driven by ZIRP there was supporting bond markets everywhere, including the US.1 point

LOL - that should send Nolan Finley right off the deep end! He wrote an OP-ED immediately after the JOA ended bitching about working for Gannett and Al Neuharth in particular. Also probably means they want to buy the other paper to close one down despite the current statements to the contrary.1 point

I think they operate under the theory that the more nervous they can make you the more likely you are to slip up if you actually trying to get by with something. I'm not sure the psychology research supports that idea all that well, but it is what it is.1 point
-
I still can't get on board with that. I'm anti conspiracy theory overall. I'm not saying because I don't think these people (Trump's orbit) are above killing innocents but rather the level of coordination needed by other law enforcement and the secret service to enable that guy to be up there. It's why I am not into JFK assassination theories either. Too many external factors had to just line up to make it work in addition to a bunch of others going along.1 point

Yeah they shoulda gone for two. Stepping back, I guess I’ll vote for the Pats to win. Vrabel was the coach I wanted for Detroit when they hired that lard Patricia and I’m reminded now that I was right.1 point

I agree. I was wondering the same thing. Make the 2 point conversion and they're within 3 points. Miss it and they're down 5 points. The same as being down 4 points after kicking an extra point, a TD is needed. McVay has been making strategy and time management mistakes for a few years. And the results prove that.1 point

Yes, and that is another of the great many reasons to assume the Butler “assassination attempt” was 100% mule muffins. Had it been real, he’d never be out in public again, let alone in a stadium with 50,000+ people.1 point

The TV market is apparently tiny. I find that ironic because the evolution of the hidef 16:9 format and the relatively few in game breaks has made hockey the best TV viewing sport of all.1 point

Norfolk, Va and environs had a major storm in 1980. I think it was late February that year. Once again a Sunday afternoon storm. The circus was in town at the big arena in Norfolk. The building also hosted minor league hockey, the Virginia Squires when the ABA was a thing and concerts. The storm was bad enough for police not to let people leave for a day or two. Her parents came to Richmond Saturday afternoon (about 2 hours away) and ended up spending 4 days. The station had a four wheel drive by then, International Harvester whose wipers broke with the first serious snow. My wife was putting in 18 hour days covering stories and ferrying employees. She wondered why she was so tired. Turned out she was five months pregnant.1 point

I remember a few "blizzards" in the late 70's in Virginia. Especially 1979 and 1980. My favorite story was in 1979. My wife was working at a radio station in Richmond, Va. WRVA was the equivalent to say WJR in Detroit or WGN in Chicago, a 50 thousand watt clear channel blowtorch. Long time legend for a morning man and monster ratings. Anyway we got about 9-10 inches of snow, if I remember correctly. I was working at a local Arby's at the time and when we closed early I put a set of chains on my Pinto. It was a Sunday afternoon, I heard her boss on the air on the way in and mentioned it. She called in, he said come on in. We spent the night in the sales manager's office. They got us up around 5, the only station folks were the morning guy, news guy, overnight jock who usually did his show from a truck stop 35 miles away, my wife and myself. Too long story short, they put out a call for 4-wheel drive vehicles to ferry staff in. I think they were offering $50 an hour. When enough staff made it in, my wife and I took off, all these guys standing around with their big trucks, I cleaned off the Pinto and drove off. I still can remember the look on their faces. We had many people on snowmobiles, 4 wheel drive things, whatever could get through, get people to work and back so they could provide groceries and medial care for those who needed it. It was really scary.1 point

As someone who is scared ****less of heights - this is nuts. If you have a Netflix account you can watch it.1 point

So he wasn't legally carrying and that is how they are going to try and get out of it? ICE didn't know he was illegally carrying when they shot him. Even if they did, that doesn't mean you get to shoot him.1 point

He's not exciting. He's not the It Girl. He's Steady Eddie. He is a lot like Andy Reid, who was not exciting, until he finally found the right QB. Something tells me 42 year old Aaron Rodgers won't be it. But look at PIttsburgh's coaching record since 1969 - Only 3 - and none of them were exciting, but they just coached well. Chuck Noll's the best coach in league history in my opinion. Pittsburgh was a laughing stock like the Browns and Lions when he took over. He turned them into a world class team in 3 years and they have had very high standards since then.1 point

Most of the team is comprised of Avila "leftovers". He definitely cares about this team winning. It's just that I see a lack of urgency to take advantage of Skubal's final two years.1 point

Of course, why is this even being debated? Even Ilitch Jr would shoot him out of a cannon if he suspected that Harris was phoning it in with the Avila holdovers.1 point

It seems like Harris's preference is high school 5-tool guys that take some time to develop... But have the higher upside. With a focus on MUST have a high hit tool to recognize pitches and strikes (command the zone) as a priority... and power to develop as however it may (low or high... hit seems more important than power, but he's not searching for zero power guys either, it seems, at least in the earliest rounds...). That doesn't mean he won't trade for a "professional hitter" type like JHM or draft a Max Anderson... even if they don't have a glove... but those appear to be secondary options not his 1st option. And I'm not going to blame him for trying to get "professional bats" into our system that meet his strike zone criteria. It'll take a while to change the system from Avila's 45-hit 55-power (if they develop properly and can find the ball) approach into Harris's 60-Hit 55-Power (if it develops) 5-tool athlete approach. It least it seems that way to me. So, no more Jung's in the 1st... or Rey Rivera's or Stewart's in the 2nd... would he have drafted Parker? I don't think so, with that weak hit tool... doesn't fit Harris's profile... Same with Izaac Pacheco... hit tool is just too low. I've always wanted a high hit tool first over power... with excellent defense included... Harris fits my draft philosophy to a "T". But I hope he can find some pitching too...1 point
