Any argument about "best" hitters that ignores OE% is fatally flawed, and you know it.

1) it doesnt matter what happens this year because theyre going to pay duren. hope for continued growth. 2) i'm not sure they are focusing more on duren than just packing the lane because the pistons cant shoot, and taking away the pick and roll. that's not "focusing on duren" to me and rather focusing on taking away a huge part of DETROIT'S offense. you can say that's just as much focusing on cade. the dofference being cade is able to do other things. duren is only able to roll to the basket and get lobs from cade. he cant create his own shot. he cant score when other teams set out to stop the pistons pick and roll. 3) if they really are "focusing on duren", it shows how easy it is to stop him. as opposed to cade. to me that shows duren as a replaceable player, not an irreplaceable max contract player.

Currently….. McGonigle is tied for 2nd in the AL in doubles, tied for 1st in triples, 2nd in WAR and 6th in batting average.

I'm not real big on the 'challenge guys to play better' strategy. Maybe you have a player here or there that needs to change approach, e.g. Raymond shooting more, but in general guys are how they play. You're dreaming if you think they are going to turn into what they haven't been.

Which is why the AG race which a lot of people including my wife thought was a lost cause (interesting to use that term about something in Virginia) was so damn important. Jay Jones is a freak and shouldn't be the AG but he's definitely filling an important role and could salvage his reputation with a successful defense of the referendum.

I think you are correct that if you generally just put your better hitters in the group at the top of the lineup and your worst near the bottom then overall it’s going to be ok. But I don’t think it’s true that it is worse to put one of your best hitters (or single best hitter however you define it) at leadoff vs third or cleanup (cleanup typically better for run producers because third hitters come up with bases empty more frequently due to batting third in the first inning). I agree that a leadoff hitter is not going to get as many RBI chances batting there. That’s not really disputable. But it’s also true that if you bat in the this spot that will score more runs by being good and getting on base and having those 2-3-4 guys drive you in. I think if you are good at both getting on base and slugging, you are going to be fine both leading off or batting cleanup. For 2024 Riley, he scored 23 runs when batting leadoff (139 PA). As cleanup hitter, he only scored 16 (173 PA). But he drove in 21 as cleanup and only 13 as leadoff. It’s a trade off.

I still feel fortunate to have been watching the game of the Tigers against the Yankees when Hank Aguirre lofted a ball with the bases loaded and with the infield drawn in because he was the worst hitter in the world, to triple in three runs into the monuments. I could’ve read that but to see it on TV was freaking unreal, historic. As I remember, he loped around the bases because he wasn’t a particularly fast runner, go figure…

Should we question Skubal's off-season conditioning? That guy wants $450 million and can't go more than six innings. The Brewers also use bunt plays to perfection. I wish AJ Hinch would work on fundamentals with this Tigers club.

According to rule 5.09(a): "A catch is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a ball in flight and firmly holding it in his possession; providing he does not use his cap, protector, pocket or any part of his uniform in getting possesion." It doesn't say he gets a single, but it is not an out. A related rule: "When a pitched ball becomes stuck in a catcher’s mask or gear, it is an immediate dead ball. According to MLB Rule 5.06(c)(7), runners are awarded one base, and the batter is awarded first base if it was ball four or strike three. It is not considered a catch if the ball lodges in the mask on a foul tip." The catcher is not the pitcher, but seems to be very similar to what happened with Gilbert.

I'm sure there's some rule we don't know that awards the hitter a single. Which the umps ruled. Gotta assume they got it right.

It needs to be replaced asap if not sooner.

I think one factor that gets lost in the lineup order discourse is that it really just doesn’t matter what position you bat in (for the most part). The larger factor is more who is actually in the lineup. After that, batting 3rd or 7th makes very little difference. Of course, you have to give guys enough PAs to find out how good they are so that you can make that decision. Paradoxical. I think the faster you can determine who is good and who is bad, and then actually acting on that as opposed to falling victim to inertial roster construction, will have a big effect on your success.

I didn’t really visit this site much back then and admittedly don’t remember whether or not there was Riley leadoff discourse here or elsewhere two years ago. And if someone tells me Hinch has a secret formula to make out his batting order, I'll tell them they're delusional. There is no stat that defines "the best" hitter. Some guy i never heard of wrote a book that clearly claims his opinion on how to create a lineup. I don't care. Just put all the good hitters in the first 6 spots or so. In a perfect world, all the hitters would have different stats that are the best on the team. It's exactly why I didn't like Riley leading off a couple of years ago. He was one of our better hitters at the time and he was constantly coming up with nobody on base. Many of his hits were wasted.

He was almost certainly thinking of Kerry. And the “maximize the ABs” argument was because of the platoon issue and teams starting to bring in lefties to face him, so it would force an early decision onto the other team if they wanted to avoid giving Kerry a third AB against a RH starter. Riley leadoff discourse was never a thing.

Looks to me like Mantha is playing himself out of any sort of big payday his regular season might have got him. I caught him looking bad on defense for another Flyers goal tonight, dude just has no feel for the defensive zone. Left the offensive zone before his team had the puck again, which led to him eventually losing his point assignment who scored. With zero points so far he's been a huge negative for the Pens. Soderblom is a healthy scratch too.

Seems like it was only about 6 months ago that stuff like this would have resulted in my immediate, violent death. Nowadays she's still fairly particular about belly attention, but she asks for it most days and can get pretty insistent. Being able to give belly rubs is pretty much the best thing about having a cat as far as I'm concerned.
