  1. Mine was the Miggy whiteout home run. Sliding into second because no one knew where the ball was.

  3. I think at this point, Boyd should be considered outside of the top 5 rotation slots simply because of health. Alexander can compete for the rotation, I think he’s earned that much. But I agree that they’ll need two quality free agent starting pitchers. I’m looking at Mize and Skubal in the rotation on Opening Day. I’m not confident in Manning yet, but I think it’s safe to assume the Tigers consider him a part of the rotation. After that, they need the quality major league arms and they’ll need some depth signings to go along with Alexander (could be a multi inning reliever if not in the rotation), Boyd (rehabbing if he returns), and Wentz (Toledo). Another Peralta type minor league signing or two would be wonderful, although easier said than done.

  5. Paraphrasing, but he basically said that he's very sensitive to the idea of trading top prospects or guys he views as long term cornerstones at this juncture. Every player has a price of course, but if a top prospect or a new graduate like Mize ends up traded, based on what I took from his comment, its because someone else paid up. I dont think he's gonna actively look to add with those pieces

  8. If there is a long strike, one that cancels a season (and don't rule that out) it is going to seriously damage baseball, especially as we are still struggling to return to normalcy. Both sides have to know this, but I don't think either side gives a damn about it, they want what they want for the right now. A missed season could easily lead to contraction a few years down the road.

  9. The podcast guys Rogellio and Chris or Cody and Kieran...can't recall were discussing that we were going to see hires with titles that wouldn't make sense to casual fans (e.g., Director of Sleep and the like.)

  10. I can’t pretend to know whether Gabe Ribas is the right hire for Director of Pitching, with all the responsibilities enumerated above, but I do know that I love that the team I’ve rooted for all my life is hiring a Director of Pitching.

  12. My impression from his comments is that he is going to spend judiciously. This may, and could, result in a big contract for a player. But there isn’t a promise out there that there is going to be a headliner signing.

  13. Tigers GM Al Avila on free agency: "I would caution you: This is not going to be spending like a drunken sailor. This is going to be a very measured process." I don’t want the organization to spend like a “drunken sailor.” That’s what got them in the mess they’ve been in for several years. We’ll see how sharp Al’s acumen is for ROI going forward. I sincerely hope he is successful for everyone’s sake. I fully expect the Tigers to compete for the playoffs beginning in spring training. It’s all yours Al. Make it happen.

  17. Detroit Tigers hire Gabe Ribas as organization's director of pitching By | 23 minutes ago DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Tigers today announced that Gabe Ribas has been hired as the organization’s Director of Pitching, reporting to Vice President of Player Development, Ryan Garko. Ribas, 41, joins the Tigers after spending the last four seasons as a Pitching Coordinator in the Los Angeles Dodgers system. While with the Dodgers, Ribas worked across many areas within player development, including coaching staffs, performance science, strength and conditioning, baseball analytics and others to construct and maintain a highly individualized and comprehensive pitching development program. Coordinating operations across these departments allowed him to develop and implement growth structures for all pitchers in the club’s farm system, while also assisting coaches at each affiliate in formulation and execution of data-driven development plans.

  18. I know we’re gonna get this eventually, but I don’t exactly love it, since it means almost certainly that 82+-loss division winners will make the playoffs occasionally. I don’t know how I’m going to feel once we see a sub-.500 tea, get to the World Series, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be warm and fuzzy, unless it’s us, and then it’ll be warm and fuzzy mixed with a touch of embarrassed.

  19. if I remember this correctly, a decade ago the union flipped out because some team cut a guy late in spring training who won his arbitration case. union claimed that is why he was cut and team screwed him by cutting him after other opportunities filled. team just had to pay him a portion of his salary. totally within rules Players on arbitration contracts who are cut on or before the 16th day of Spring Training are owed 30 days' termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). A player cut between the 16th day and the end of Spring Training is owed 45 days' termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). The arbitration salary becomes guaranteed if the player is on the 25-man roster when the season begins.

  20. I don't think you can do that. If the team goes to arbitration they are obligated to pay whichever award is made - in effect it would become like any other MLB contract - guaranteed. If you don't want to risk paying the award you have to give the player his release before arbitration - he's then a free agent.

  27. It’s so weird for there to be no game. When the regular season is going on I can look forward to watching them or I can look forward to ignoring them. Either way I find a level of pleasure in either possibility, both which are now impossible.

  28. I want that pass rusher from Oregon or perhaps even Hutchinson. I think both are gonna be studs. I agree with Bombers about going WR with the Rams pick, that's where Id go. Unless things drastically change and one of the QBs really breaks out from the pack Id steer clear of drafting one. I think we have way too many holes to risk whiffing on a 1st round QB. He has to be as sure of thing as you can get if you're gonna take one.

  30. Yes, regular season almost exclusively on Bally's. Four more preseason games between tonight and Saturday before the season opener hosting Tampa on the 14th. Not sure about TV for the rest of the pre-season, but NHL Centre Ice is still in free preview mode so I just voice search "Detroit Red Wings" and it pops up somewhere on my TV.

  31. Should be Ballys and whatever their overflow channel is Ballys+ (?) but if you are not in the blackout area then ESPN+ is your place (if you use a vpn than ESPN+ can always be your place). We could talk not in public about other methods if needed 😉

  32. Correa is from the Astros team that openly defied Hinch. So far, we are told, the Tigers are responding to Hinch's leadership. So I don't want a guy in the room who has already chosen to ignore him in the past, influencing the younger players. Of course, if I could choose between Correa and Hinch, it's Correa all day.

  34. If they sign both Correa and Verlander, their goal would be to make the playoffs in 2022. Is that likely? Maybe not, but I think it's reasonably attainable especially if they expand to 14 teams as expected. .

  36. I used to like watching every World Series. It had a mystique which is doesn't have now, at least for me. It could be because I was young and I thought it was important. It could be because before interleague play, the two World Series opponents had never faced each other before and never even faced their opponent's opponents. It could be because there are so many playoffs series now that the World Series just seems like another playoff series rather than something that determines a definitive champion.

Probably would have gotten a better education if I had, but I turned it down, sticking with my friends at Urbana High. George Will went to Uni, and I didn’t want to hang with his ilk.
