Could've put this in the things that make you smile thread but since it involves a dog I'll post it here. My neighbor's dog who I've known since she was a puppy recently had to have her leg amputated due to cancer and naturally she hasn't been herself the last couple weeks. But today when I got home from work she was out in front with my neighbor and she came running(well as close to running as she can do now) over to me wagging her tail like her old self, she and my dog were playing like they used to. My neighbor said she has been doing alot better the last couple days. Just seeing her like that made me smile cause in a way I think of her as my second dog since I take care of her anytime they are out of town.3 points

Shopping Skubal is smart. Pitchers break. I don't really trust Avila to get a good return, but that's more of a problem with the current GM rather than the general strategy.2 points

OTOH, he's probably bitten off more than he can chew this time which means this is possibly the optimum time to stop him decisively enough that he either a) burns up his military enough to neuter himself, b)burns enough support inside Russia to fall. If the West fails to take of advantage of this opportunity the next time the strategic situation may be far less favorable. There might not be a large strong population ready to undertake the fight, he might have learned enough not to make the same tactical mistakes again, the Chinese may strengthen his military tech to where the Western weapons differential won't be as decisive. It seems naive to think Putin's malignancy will in anyway abate if the outcome is a loss of 20% of Ukraine and a temporary military stalemate. The 'risk of everything' is inherent to Putin's existence as leader of Russia and he will continue to leverage those fears against us until he fails sufficiently, or he dies. And in the latter case there is no guarantee his replacement won't be as bad. Does this have to end with Ukraine whole as of status quo 2013? I don't know. But it should end with Putin's army clearly and unambiguously defeated at least to where it's the Russian side that is suing for peace. Plus, for once, this is not a war of our choice, it's Ukraine's war of necessity, and after all the times since 1953 that we engaged in conflicts of choice we started for the wrong reasons in the name of people/cultures who in the end weren't interested enough, there seems something unseemly about the idea of now failing to support Ukraine in a fight they do desperately want to win and when they are fighting much more for the ideals we usually only claim to fight for when our real reasons were oil, or political ideology or other economic expediency.1 point

Reported incompetence of their armed forces notwithstanding, I believe an adventurous Putin armed with nukes is always a worry.1 point

The guy doing the shopping is an issue.... but other than that, just about everybody should have a price. FWIW, I'll take the under on Skubal actually being traded.1 point

Apparently the rumor is that the Sabres (who picked directly behind the Wings) wanted Kasper badly and tried to trade, it is being reported out of Austria (Kasper's home country) that they tried to trade for Kasper but the Wings wanted to keep him. https://themalikreport.com/2022/07/26/roughly-translated-the-buffalo-sabres-wanted-marco-kasper-at-9th-overall-but-detroit-got-their-man-with-pick-8/1 point

I don't see this in regards to the Durant situation. They signed him and paid him when he was injured and going to miss an entire season. They brought in the players he wanted. They brought in the coach he wanted. They did everything he wanted.1 point

And the whole weak D strategy of “we can’t get tough like that with Rs because when they win they’ll just turn around and do it to us” is hot garbage, because even if the weak Ds do nothing, Rs are going to “do it to us”, anyway.1 point

I probably saw him 10 times. Always a very entertaining show. He's one of those guys that seemed to reach a lot of people through music, a wide cross section of music fans who usually wouldn't line up together. It's not that his death hit me hard, it's just that it came out of nowhere. I mean, he was a rock star, of course he dabbled in drugs, but this was so surprising.1 point

1. You do not give Putin anything as a reward for invasion and war crimes against the Ukrainian people. 2. You do not put your own nuclear chips in play for Ukraine.1 point

the ~5-6 yrs from ~2015 up to the pandemic were really wasted. The economy was doing fine by then and they could have put things on a firmer basis but they had to keep trying to over rev the engine. If there hadn't been so much money sloshing around beforehand I doubt the exit from the pandemic would have been half this out of control.1 point
