I wouldn't put any faith in the report that the Tigers offered a lower contract. If they'd wanted to keep Candelario, they would have made it happen.

It's comical to look thru this game thread & see certain posters going completely ape shit for 3 quarters - posting 1 negative thing after another - & then go radio silent after the Brock Wright touchdown & have zero posts since.

I doubt Harris is making any personnel decisions based on fan sentiment, but it would have been a very bad look if the new administration gave a raise to a player who hit under .220 with an OPS that would be low for a utility infielder, combined with poor defense. You could even say it would be a bit tone deaf with what is currently taking place with the economy and challenges that others are going through.

Harris did not come here to save money for the owner. Why would he take a job like that? He has a budget, and he is going to spend it, but not by overpaying guys by 40%.

I was thinking about the debate we all had on the old forum prior to last season about how many players on the Lions would start on the other teams, I think the cutoff was 20 teams and I believe we only came up with 3 unamious choices in Hock, Decker. Ragnow. What would that number look like now only a year and a half later? I think on offense atleast 4 of the Oline, St. Brown, possibly Swift and/or Williams and Goff. So you're talking 6 to 8 guys. On defense its a little trickier but I think Hutch, McNeil,Okudah for sure with about 3-5 more guys as possibilities. So we essentially went from 3 to 5 plus starters to about 13 to 15 in a little over a year. Part of that was Holmes acquisitions others were guys growing under the coaching staff here but either way that is a remarkable turnaround.

Lions run defense has really gone under the radar. Jets had 22 carries for 50 yards. Their longest run was 6 yards.

This dovetails into the crux of where I am coming from on all this. For Harris to make a calculation along the lines, we expect Candelario to deliver X value—let's make it easy and say 1 WAR—for which we would gladly pay $3 million, but for which would never pay $7 million, is perfectly logical business-wise. Such a fiduciary-based calculation falls squarely within his budgeting and spending responsibilities as PBO. But for fans to say, I think Candelario will produce 1 WAR this season, and I'll be happy if the team pays only $3 million for that, but I'll be angry if the team pays $7 million instead—that's just bonkers to me. Because it's still 1 WAR either way, which would result in the same number of wins for the team, which is really all that fans care about. And since we have no way of knowing whether the other $4 million would have gone back into payroll for other, better players, I don't think we can use that as the self-evident argument to defend it, because there's no way for us to know that's what would have happened. In fact, because of the low level of money we're talking about, I believe the fairest conclusion would be that the roster would look exactly the same whether they paid Jeimer $3MM or $7MM, unless Harris were to specifically declare he took the $4MM he saved on Jeimer and got such and such another player for it, which of course he would never declare publicly. Semi-related to this: if the Harris Analytics team projected Jeimer to be only a 1 WAR player in 2023, then I totally support showing him the door, because we need more from third base—and every position, really—than 1 WAR. BUT: if Analytics projects him to be a 3 WAR player, but we let him go because they wouldn't pay $7 million for that simply because he underperformed so poorly this past season, then that would be equally bonkers. So, giving Harris the benefit of the doubt on this, I gotta conclude that they projected him to be a lot closer to 1 WAR than 3 WAR.

The other things (beyond Malloy and Perez) I am interested in for 2023: is Turnbull healthy and effective, is A Meadows going to provide production near pre-2022 levels and can Carpenter continue his strong 2022 play going forward. There are other things of course, but success in those cases would make for a more watchable team and some sense of moving forward on a timeline shorter than four more years of rebuild, as some have said.

One thing that continues to impress me is how many times the first option is wide open on crucial 3rd and 4th downs. This is great play design and play calling by the coaching staff. It keeps happening at least once every game.

I'll be curious to see if Justyn-Henry plays third base at Toledo. I hope so, give him 40 games there and if he is covered in bruises then you say oh well, he's a left fielder. And let's see what Wenceel Perez can do with 40 games at second base at Toledo. Is he a major league regular or not, I think that the consensus might be "not", but let's find out. Those are the two guys that I am most interested in for 2023.

In a lost season, where he’s not blocking anyone, I’ll allow it. Hopefully the hyphenated, human walking machine can challenge that at some point in the season. And Schoop can finish the last half of his last season with the Tigers as utility guy.

I’ll give you a radical, in-house solution. Move Schoop to 3B, where his diminishing mobility will likely play better, and give Wenceel Perez a long look in Spring Training for 2B. I don’t think he’d be that overmatched. You’d want to have a veteran utility player as insurance, but if Harris is serious about giving AB’s to our prospects, this would be consistent with that position.

i just hope the lions hire at least one bad coach next year so dan campbell has someone to fire in order to start a new winning streak.

Campbell and Johnson protected Goff today. He got to uncork one deep shot and underthrew Jaymo by a yard. The 4th and inches play design was genius.

I always get an aisle seat and while I don’t stand up right away I will eventually and like to prop both arms up and block the path. Casually. Revisit this post in March when the budget is actually committed and you see what it bought. At this point you're dumping on the shopper while he has just pulled into the mall parking lot. The critique may be justified by the eventual outcomes, but at this point it still just guesses about events that have yet to happen or not happen. If you are skeptical about Harris that's fine, but you could say that in one line and save the rest of the typing.
