  1. Not defending him but Al Kaline of all people used to say that line drives/hard hit balls hit right at an OF are the hardest plays. You are like an infielder at that point with little time to react. Do you go in, out, left ,right, dive, smother? In his case he made the right call at that point in the game but was just not athletic or skillful enough to make the play.

  3. So I just had an opportunity to have a brief exchange with a fella named Josh Ruffin, who works in analytics for the Minnesota Twins (I am up here for a conference). I asked him, the information we can access on Baseball Savant, how close is that to the information they have in-house at the Twins, and is there a huge chasm? And to my surprise he replied that the Savant information is not all that far away from what they use. He specifically mentioned that the bat speed data that was recently added to Savant by Baseball was released to the teams and to the public at the same time. And of course, they have greater depth of information, such as Savant information for Dominican Rookie League, that we don’t, and they also have additional things that are proprietary such as biomechanics, which itself may come to Savant in a few years. But by and large, the information on a player’s Savant card is really close to the information they use, and he even said he occasionally looks up an opposing player’s publicly-available Savant card to get a quic overview on the guy.

  7. I have a friend who is an awesome 50+ year old runner and she also completly ruptured her hamstring. It's a really difficult injury from which to return. I think it took a a couple months after surgery of being almost totally immobile and almost a year of rehab. She made it back to her pre-injury level which is amazing at her age.

  10. While it wasn't that unusual in ' 72, guys like Earl Morrell as backups are pretty rare in today's league. Most backups tend to inexperienced guys. Quarterbacks as good as Morrell would have gotten too expensive to have as backups in today's NFL. They either still have their starting gig or they made enough to retire....

  12. there is an art to getting your glove turned around to open upward on a dive that even many major leaguers never fully master. For a master class lesson see Parker's nab of that sinking liner the other night where the fingers of his gloves were literally on the ground - glove open upward, as ball landed on/in them for the out.

  15. An injury to anyone's starting QB will derail an entire season. Just look at the Jets last year with Aaron Rodgers. For every Tom Brady, ready and waiting to take over from Drew Bledsoe type of scenario, there are dozens and dozens of failed seasons because the backup simply isn't as good as the starter who went down.

  16. Another thing about the decency of HW Bush. After Nixon's inauguration LBJ came home to Texas to some fanfare but for a departing president it's anti climactic for sure, especially one who didn't run because he couldn't win, which is the same as losing in practical terms. Who was there to greet him? A young congressman from the other party. That's class.

  17. Time has a way of giving more perspective than decisions in the heat of the moment. A Facebook friend mentioned that the Watergate Hearings began on this day in 1973. My Republican congressman at the time was on that committee (Caldwell Butler). I was a 21 year old kid. I can't imagine my current Republican Congressman doing that now.

  18. It would take something extreme, like a Dem version of a Trump, to get me to go back. I have changed my beliefs in a lot of ways because I realized a lot of the talking points were horse ****. I'm pro choice all the way. I think the rich can pay more taxes and be ok with it. I used to believe in "trickle down" but you have to take care of people at a minimum level. I'm for gun control. I'm also for a strong military and I don't get into the arguments like we should cut defense to spend on something else. We can spend on both. We should help take care of the world. Basically I think it all came down to spending a lot of time on the right wing sites at the time and being in a bubble. National Review, Instapundit, WSJ, etc. I read that stuff all day long.

  20. I would argue that was part of the GOP pre maga anyways. I definitely fought with Oblong and folks about culture war issues pre maga. One I remember fighting about a lot is was the ground zero mosque. We fought about abortion and alot of the same stuff.

  21. I don't know. My core principles are the same. I think I'll be with whichever party best represents those. i think punishing the GOP for straying from those is going to remain the template for a while. So, I will still be that guy at the shooting range who is shaking his head at all the nuttery going on around him.

  23. Sudfeld looked lost. He takes TFL instead of throwing it away. Slides head first, very unaware and you can't blame that on the rain. Hooker was an immediate upgrade when he was on the field. Bates looked legit kicking that 53 yarder in the rain.

  25. Speaking of nice area, Jimmy Price has been gone a year this week. And yes, it is a nice area. The 2nd of the two Tiger fan trips this season is in SF this weekend for this series. The lodging on this trip is immediately across the street from Oracle Park, one of the best stays in San Fran. If you’ve never seen a game at Oracle, try to get there someday. The Tigers will face Ray, Webb, and Birdsong as currently listed.

  26. ah, another old girlfriend we go up against. Robbie Ray is like Kim Basinger.... came in hot, had some ups and downs, restarted again and won an Oscar. There's drama there but damn it would have been fun to be on that ride with her.

  35. Same, the times I watched him at Tennessee he basically looked like a pocket passer with some mobility but not a real threat to tuck and run. THen again those SEC defenses may have been faster than these 3rd stringers playing for the Giants. lol

  36. I feel sorry for the Mariners since they will have to deal with the humiliation of getting swept and losing to this lineup of rookies, the injured, and a permanently slumping overpaid veteran tonight. They may even question the nature of the universe and their place in it when they drag themselves back to the locker room and drive home in $200,000 cars to their Instagram model girlfriends in Scandinavian themed glass and steel penthouses overlooking the fantastic skyline of Seattle and ask themselves if life has any meaning at all. No, they won’t. They’ll suck it up and move onto tomorrow just like John Wick. Because that’s what men do. And they could beat the crap out of us, but I hope not.

  40. I don't know which of these rankings are legit, but it seems that the Tigers have more top prospects than they have had since probably the 70s. They won't all be hits, but the great thing is when you have so many top prospects they don't all have to be hits to improve the Tigers substantially.

  42. The Trump campaign doesn’t seem to be trying very hard at the moment. Are they going through the motions like they’re cheating in a game rigged for them to win or is it just the opposite and they know they’ve already lost and there’s no point in full effort. Could also be a third option that they just suck and can’t help but doing dumb things.

  43. I agree, however Trump is not the only problem. Look at the conservative think tanks like the Heritage Foundation. They’ve all come around to even more extreme thinking than what Trump espouses. A lot very rich and powerful want it all and everyone one else be damned. And they are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. They still believe the rich will inherit the Kingdom or maybe I’ve been reading too many Daniel Silva novels
