So this setup is similar to ALDS against the Yankees in 2006 - Tigers up 2 games to 1 with a chance to end the series with a Game 4 win. We remember how great that turned out. Everyone remembers for the Kenny Rogers et al. post-game celebrations with the fans, as do I, but I also remember it as the last game I ever attended with my dad. And I think it was his final time at a Tigers game, ever, even though he lived another 6 years.9 points

That’s what it is all about ain’t it? I talked my Dad into driving up the three hours to Detroit on a random week night to see our favorite players son Prince Fielder play the Tigers. Just so happened to be JV’s first no hitter. This year he is in the last stages of hospice care and bed ridden. He still has the flicker of light when we talk about the Tigers.8 points

I had fears about tonight until I heard how badly that the city was dissed at the Detroit Economic Club. No way this can be allowed to not be a clinch night after that.3 points

I'm doing my part by still wearing the same clothes I've had on since August 11th, it seems to be helping the Tigers.... can't say the same for my personal life though.3 points

I remember spending time at scenic Wallowa Lake in Oregon with the family just short of 20 years ago, back when I wore a Tigers cap all the time, and someone from the Tri-Cities WA area noticed that and they almost hugged me telling me how much they loved their hometown boy Jeremy Bonderman. They were ecstatic. They couldn’t stop talking about him because apparently a lot of people knew him and he was the only celebrity they knew. It was a real Kumbaya “We are the World” moment. Possessing a halfway decent filter about these things I never asked them “What do you think about his first innings?“ Although I wanted to, but I wanted to engage in the lovefest more.3 points

Speaking of 2016, 538 had Clinton at 48.5, Trump at 44.9, and Johnson at 5. Clinton finished at 48.2 but Trump at 46.1 and Johnson at 3.2. Trump got enough of that Johnson vote combined with a small move to Stein that gave him a slim win in three states. This year there isn’t a 3rd party polling at 5%. That’s why the margins are slimmer.2 points

Doing all I can. I'm wearing the same clothes, and will get the same food and beer. It's really all up to my dad though, and whether he is sitting in the correct position or not...2 points

I can see pitching chaos becoming a bigger thing in future post-seasons, as the days off between each game is what makes it a really viable strategy for more teams.2 points
-
I'm of the opinion they would all run through a wall to win. That's how ubercompetitors are wired, and you don't get to the majors unless you're an ubercompetitor.2 points

I don't think pitching chaos will become that big of a thing. There are too many things that can go wrong when you are depending on bullpen games day after day - injuries, pitchers getting tired, etc. I doubt the Tigers or anyone else will try this for a full season next year. What I could see is teams going with 3 or 4 regular starters followed by a bullpen game or two. I don't think we will see what the Tigers did this year repeated again, but that's what makes it so special.2 points

That's 35-14. It's not 35-5, but damn it, I'll take it.2 points

Vierling has made his mark in Detroit for sure. If I had to choose a favorite Tiger player this season he’d be the guy. He’s the same player every day. Leads by example and does whatever is asked of him.2 points

I'm prepared for a W. Also prepared for overs on: Lamb yardage, he will get his. Defensive PI calls on Det CB, we play physical and seem ok with that. References to Arnold as "handsy", the moniker was local then Aikman cemented it last game. Lions by 2 scores.1 point

I don’t want this series to drag on and go back to Cleveland. I want this series to end now. Consider it a mercy killing. The world loves an underdog more than it loves established winners. The Tigers will be doing the world at large a favor by putting the Cleveland Guardians down and giving the world what it wants, the toppling of the idols.1 point

The polls have been looking good for Harris. The Pennsylvania ones in particular. MAGA is flooding a lot of right wing polls like they did in 2022.1 point

What’s wrong with you people? You all want to beat “The Best?” This is America for God’s sake: the land of mere appearances, where attitude and confidence reign supreme and where no greater substance nestling beneath is required. Of course I’m joking, and it would be more emotionally satisfying to finish beating Cleveland, and then beat the Yankees, then the Dodgers. But great wars are often won for prosaic reasons other than great strategy or superior combat skills. Sometimes an army wins simply because they had more access to food or fuel, so it ends up being kind of lame. if we beat Cleveland and then the Royals and then the Padres people are only going to remember “World Series 2024” and how the Tigers outfought every team while lacking most of the resources that other teams have and that will be considered an astonishing outcome.1 point

Yes, he's a quality player. He's actually the best player at whichever position he's put at. I mean, he's our best defensive rightfielder and our best defensive 3rd baseman. But my favorite position player is Parker Meadows. The kid is a difference maker. And his defense is so good, Hinch even plays him against LH pitching. Meadows is going to be a huge star in this league.1 point

Moneyball? They are going to have a trilogy about us.1 point

I don't think the bullpen strategy is sustainable for an entire season. To start, the rotation was Skubal, Flaherty, Maeda, Olson, Mize with Manning in the wings. Next season, I believe the Tigers are bringing in starters, hopefully to go 5 or 6 innings per game.1 point

If the Tigers were to advance and happened to beat NYY with the pitch chaos theory, MLB will change the rules immediately. I don’t think Vogt is the type to complain about it but you just know it’s burning up some people in the league.1 point
-
I want to face NY just because it validates us on the big stage (like whipping the Astros didn't already do that). The whole MLB would hate it if two regional teams were in the ALCS narrative bores me. Nobody watches the MLB playoffs except the people in those two towns or their diaspora of fans.1 point

I agree. I don't see the big sports leagues getting into ad free experiences. Maybe, they have and I missed it, but it doesn't seem like it would be profitable.1 point
-
I'm not sure the thing I'm asking for is ever coming. I'm not sure it's in Baseball's interest to dissociate advertising and marketing from the game experience. I can tell you from firsthand experience that clients are super stoked to be associated with sports and teams and games, and for far more than just the eyeballs it generates. So the idea that Baseball would charge a few dollars in exchange for an ad-free experience, for which a very high percentage of fans would opt in to, might end up not being anywhere near worth the money for Baseball to offer it.1 point
