  1. We grew up with a piano in the house and none of the seven of us kids bothered to learn to play it. As a result, even though I’m very musical, I’m not a musician. My wife bought me an electric Casio full piano with heavy keys for Xmas some years ago. It would sit for months untouched until I got a song in my head and I would sit down to pick it out, then that would be it for another long stretch of time. In the past year, I was at my brother’s for Thanksgiving. He has a piano (again, doesn’t know how to play it) and some of the kids were plinking around with it. I joined for a couple minutes but couldn’t do anything with it. Earlier that year I’d been at a resort hotel, saw a piano in the lobby, and really wished I could sit down and play something, anything. I felt embarrassed because, again, I’ve had a damn piano in my place of residence for probably most of my life. So this year, I made an actual New Year’s resolution to learn to play five songs on the piano, so that whenever I would see one out in the wild, I’d be able to sit down and confidently play something at least halfway decent, and play it at least halfway decently. And so, after committing to the work, I can now play “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” (i.e, Cheers theme song); “He Gives Us All His Love” by Randy Newman; the piano part of “Great Gig in the Sky” by Pink Floyd; and almost all of the piano part of “Layla” by Derek and the Dominoes. For my fifth song, I am currently working on completing “Fred Jones Part 2” by Ben Folds Five. All these songs are quite simple and rather short, but they are, to me anyway, very beautiful-sounding songs that I think people might be at least a little impressed seeing someone play them. I can’t play them all with zero mistakes yet, but I’m far enough along I feel pretty confident about going to my brother’s this TG, playing the songs and surprising some people who’ve known me for six-plus decades and would swear on a holy bible that I can’t play piano, same as them. And moral of the story is: it’s not too late to call the audible.

  3. It's the easiest hanging curveball for any of the Dems on the Senate Health Committee, but when he's questioned, I would tick down a list of conditions addressed by vaccines (ie. polio, tuberculosis, etc.) and get him on the record as to whether he thinks they should be banned or not. Don't put on a show, just ask him the questions point blank. And don't let him evade. Make sure everyone knows what they signed up for.

  5. If they would sign Kim, I could definitely see Baez getting a reasonable chance until Kim is ready. If they don't sign Kim, I'd be shocked if they go into the season counting on one of Baez/Kreidler/Leonard having to be the platoon/backup shortstop. I think they at least get another right handed option who can play short in case Baez doesn't show improvement rather than counting on Kreidler or Leonard.

  6. Days like today really make the preening and concern trolling from some about the campaign (and decisions that the campaigns made) seem so much more meaningless. Campaigns obviously have a responsibility to fight for every vote and do what is effective obviously. But I'm not a member of a campaign, so I'll say this, whether it's politically correct or not: This is what Donald Trump was broadcasting he would do this entire time. He couldn't have been any more clear. His opponent actually did highlight this stuff as well (even if some feel "that stuff doesn't matter") At some level (or even most level), the voters have to bear responsibility for this. We all tiptoe around it, but it's reality. And we are all collectively going to live the consequences. It's hard for me to even be mad at it honestly... He put it all out there.

  12. Daughter's Fender Squire arrived. Signed her up for lessons. It is not easy to find a young woman to teach a young woman guitar. Did find one who is college student so right up her alley. I assigned the son the job of buying her picks that he thinks she'd like. That might have interesting results.

  15. Not actually Larry Sabato, fwiw... but still, the same is kinda true of Fox News where people are shamed if they don't use or consume the product under the guise of "understanding" the other side. Life is short and discourse on Twitter, while never great, has become really really toxic. Particularly if you end up on the "For You" tab, which the app seems to push me toward every time on log in. The ability to use the product to the product as a news aggregator for things that aren't politics has steadily gone downhill in the time since Musk has owned the product, undoubtedly in large part to changes made (such as eliminating blocking, among other things). Maybe the explanation is as simple as the product just sucks and has gone downhill, just as has happened to many brands over the years. And maybe alternatives are picking up steam because they provide a different experience for users who don't have time or inclination to wade through all the BS that the current environment that Twitter throws at you. In other words, the market is doing what the market does.

  16. Yep, that's what I take from this. They're exciting and they're making progress (hard not to make progress from rock bottom), that's all we can ask for right now. If they make a play-in that's a bonus. Regardless, Holland has to make one free throw there rookie or not and Cade, again, has to be better down the stretch.

  23. Congratulations, keep up the work. A few years ago after a trip to Ireland where we discovered Barry Douglas and Camerata Ireland my wife decided she needed to get back into music. She had played violin thru high school and college but life intervened as it almost always does. She got the violin out of the closet and joined a local orchestra. That lead to the founding of another orchestra (Spectrum Orchestra in the Farmington Hills/Birmingham area). For a while she had a blog called Midlife Musicians chronicling the return to music in late middle age. The result of her efforts led me to take up the saxophone (I played clarinet in high school but drooped it soon after) I had always wanted to try the sax so when she decided she wanted a grand piano I got the sax. Which led me to lessons and search for a group to play with. The first group was part of an organization called New Horizons for Music, founded by a professor at Eastman School for Music in NY. The program caters to older adults who either played or wanted to learn to play an instrument (mostly concert bands nationwide). Because of New Horizons, I got to attend "Band Camp" at Interlochen , and a couple more places. A combination of dental issues and COVID has reduced my playing time along with a dearth of concert bands in our new area. I plunk a bit on the piano we have (nice that the electronic ones have headphones) and play the sax a bit in the garage. Maybe I need to spend time there working up some stuff for the holidays,

  26. I'm not sure its quite that simple. The NBA can be a game of runs. And also consider that teams are likely to look past the Pistons given how awful they've been the past several seasons. I think the Pistons are taking some teams by surprise early on. It might not last long. At the very least, they appear to be more competitive on the floor. And, sure, up 18 and lose in OT. They were missing some key cogs to start the game and then lost another one during the game. Plus this was the second OT game in a row. Plus they probably don't know what to do with themselves when they're up 18 and the opponent comes roaring back.

  28. I swear I’ve aged 10 years watching this team over the last week. Every game down to the wire and crazy endings. Pistons had a decent showing in this one on the road with 4 rotation players out and another getting kicked out. Just couldn’t put it away. Didn’t help that Giannis turned into KD from the perimeter and hit all his free throws on top of it.

  29. I think the stats paint a worse picture than he actually performed Sunday Night. He was bad, but he wasn't dreadful like 15/30 for 240 yards, 2 TDs, and 5 INTs looks. The first two picks were both deflected, which - in an ideal world, passes aren't getting deflected, yes - but I still think there is a BABIP element of luck there. The third was a Hail Mary that doesn't get thrown if time isn't expiring. It's just the last two, both in the 3rd quarter, that I would say are on Goff. The 4th was a good decision and a terrible throw, if he hits LaPorta in stride it's probably 1st and Goal if not a touchdown. And the 5th was just a blunder. He had Jamo in single coverage as his first look, but Jamo wasn't ready for it. Goff just threw it up there as if Jamo was Calvin and could just jump up and grab anything in the zip code. Bizarro. From that point on though, really for the last 18 minutes of the game, he was the Goff we've come to know and love. He made a beautiful floating over the shoulder check down to Gibbs late in the 3rd that went for 33, and made the throws he needed to to put Bates in a position to win that game. From that throw I mentioned on, he was 7/9 for 79 yards and a touchdown. I don't expect any hangover, I think we will see MVP Goff again.

  32. We're going to find out. Either way, as much as we bend over backwards to blame campaign strategy, the inconvenient truth is that the voters are the one who walk into the booth and pull the lever or fill in the box. And much of what we saw today was broadcasted ahead of time.

  40. I think the smart people running baseball teams have figured out that in baseball you get paid for what you did more than what you are going to do. That means there are two ways to run a franchise. If you are rich enough to be NYY or LAD, you buy the proven players knowing you will end up paying much higher $$ per performance but you don't care because you have the income. The alternative to invest all you can in the front end and field young cheap teams where the players are building the resumes that will get them paid later, but who are cheap now. The other bonus is that younger players are healthier, faster and play better defense. If you are a low revenue team, this is your path. You might spend on extending guys early and buying out arb years plus, but the older top FAs are not going to be your playing field because the never pay back their contracts in their second halves. The trick is don't get caught in the middle like the Tigers did post DD, paying for players you can't afford who don't produce, which stresses your development spending. I think you have to avoid ending up half in/half out. Which is why I don't take much comfort in the "the Tigers will spend when they are ready" line because what I don't want them to do is what they did before.
