... Now that strategy pushes him to our weakness, covering deep.  If a WR is wide open, Purdy can just get it close. Can Sutton and Vildor at least stay close enough to impact a bad throw? I do like our safety's ability to close on a deep ball...

The key question there is not on Sutton or Vildor... it's: "Can Kerby & Melifonwu bait Purdy into throwing a couple INT's?"

But I guess that falls back on a related question: "How often will AG leave Sutton and/or Vildor on on island...?"

Well, since he is such an awful coordinator (like Ben Johnson) probably all game long.

How did they ever get this far with those two coordinators?

I mean offensively, they don't score touchdowns every single drive.  Ben Johnson sucks, man.   Can't wait until the Falcons hire him as Head Coach.

Since the league is fixed and they've already determined it's Baltimore vs. San Francisco in the Super Bowl, I just want the Lions to show well.

Of the 4 teams left I think the majority of this country is pulling for the Lions, but as someone posted a shot of a TV guide description of Ravens vs. Niners and since we know predetermined final is based on the color of the Super Bowl logo, all we'll have left after Sunday is our pride.

Next year, based on the logo, it's Baltimore vs. either Green Bay or Philadelphia.  (unless another AFC team goes with Purple).

Hoping Super Bowl 60 has some Honolulu Blue in the logo.

It ain't scripted, but it is fixed.     Just watch how many calls go against us in really big moments Sunday, you'll swear we're in Dallas.

1 question - IF the Lions win Sunday, will you admit it isn't fixed?

I half wonder if they haven't fixed it FOR us since there hasn't been any ridiculous penalty awarded to help our opponents.

I wouldn't say Im not worried about Bosa but I'm always more concerned with pressure from the inside vs. the edges.

For one I trust our tackles and for another Goff does a pretty good job of stepping up in the pocket to avoid the pressure from the edge. When it comes from the interior he doesnt have that option.

How does SF usually line up Bosa? I feel like if they just get stubborn and try to make him beat Decker or Sewell, he'll be in for a frustrating day. If they bully Awosika though and line Bosa up on the inside how the Lions will occasionally do with Hutchinson, Goff might be in for a frustrating day.

The WSJ called the Lions the biggest sports story right now, and said it's not even close.  The rest of the country is buying into this team.  Dan Campbell's picture showed up on the freaking Drudge Report in a link to a story about him.

Given all of that I don't see why the league, if they did fix or prefer things, would do it against the Lions.  It doesn't pass the smell test.  This is not a brief cinderella story. It's someting that was started midway through last season and kept going and there's no reason to think it won't continue.  They didn't come out of nowhere.   Stories like that are good for business and that's what the NFL cares about.

And yet NBC still gets the date of our first Championship wrong.

I don't believe the league outright fixes games to have a predetermined winner or preferential winner. I also don't generally believe they care who wins the games, though on a rare occasion they may. I do believe the league works over the Lions not on an intentional basis, out of malice. Rather they do it because we historically haven't stood up for ourselves on the field or behind the scenes it would seem. Think back to the picked up flag in Dallas or the batted ball in Seattle. If those incidents happened to a Dan Campbell coached team he'd be red in the face, screaming in the refs ear, and blowing them up for the remainder of the game. Jim Caldwell just stood their stone silent and took it, no questions asked. I also feel that Sheila and Rod, unlike her father, mother, or Tom Lewand, would be raising hell behind the scenes and privately demanding answers from the league. So because we never used to stand up for ourselves as an organization, the league and its officials just didn't take us seriously.

If the league did prefer the 49'ers over us I would have to guess it would boil down to money. The 49'ers are in a much bigger metro market and rank in the top 5 in merchandise sales.  They are also top 10 in revenue for the league and we are the dead last franchise in revenue. They are a top 5 franchise in overall value and we are at the bottom. Our fans also spend middle of the pack on merchandise and some of the least on concessions at a game. We're blue collar and some white collar fans, with not nearly the amount discretionary spending that the average 49'ers fan would have to spend on merchandise, tickets, concessions, etc.

I think that the thought that the league would fix games, or have a script is silly for two reasons: one practical and one personal.

Practically, it would either be too big to succeed, or too small to matter. If there was some grand "fix" among all the NFL officials, all it would take is one (of hundreds) part-time officials to blow the whistle, or publish a book, or whatever, and it would all come crumbling down. Same if one MGM Grand employee came across the wrong name in their books and records. Ultimately, it would happen in the matter of weeks or months, not years... On the flip side, if it was one or two stray Tim Donaghy's, although that's more plausible to be lasting, they would be ineffective in the grand scheme of things. Donaghy was an NBA official for 13 years and only worked 20 playoff games. Mostly because he was really bad (which was probably related to his betting). Is it plausible there are bad actors in the NFL operations? Yes, but I don't think their bad actions are generally going to be relevant in the grand scheme of the season.

Personally, I don't think it's healthy to consider this as even plausible. I devote way too much mental energy and time to this sport and to this team. If it's all fixed like the WWE, what's the point? I'm the stupid one in that equation, and I'd prefer to think of myself as smart (and devoted to a fault).

2 Points:

1.  As far as the NFL rigging games...I do not think it has to be some huge conspiracy like people think.  I have this vision in my head of Deniro from Casino or something just kinda giving a nod to the head official or something...not to say "fix the game against THAT team", but to say "team x has been doing a lot of <insert whatever foul you want> the past month or so....lets call those in this game tight" while not saying the first part out loud....it is not hard at all to imagine them favoring certain teams for whatever reasons they have (money...it ALL comes down to money...in whatever form you want to proclaim it, ie direct contributions from billionaire owners, back door deals, gambling, tv revenue...whatever) the officials have even come out after games saying they have been told to focus on certain things every year....7-8 years ago or whatever it was...it was the process of a catch...other years it has been false starts or delay of games...if you watch enough games you will see it.  Called like crazy over the course of a year and the next year....crickets.  This is league wide, but this year....false starts could have been called on about 90% of the plays snapped this year and were almost never called...not just Lions games...all of them.

2.  As far as the outcome of this game....SF is a better team overall on paper from what all the experts are telling me...they are obviously a very good team...I think we are close enough in talent to beat them and could make a case we are a better team than them in parts of the game I personally think are key to winning games.  Lines, RB's and QB.

Lions D line v SF O line:

This is pretty equal IMO....really close.

Lions O line v SF D Line:

Also very close, we are talking top 4-5 in the league for each of us.

RB's:

McCaffrey is obviously the #1 here, but Gibbs is not far behind and that is not even taking Montgomery into account.  While they have the better overall player....the 2 headed beast we have crushes their #1 guy IMO.

QB's:

Goff is better than Purdy...full stop.

Now I did not mention secondary, special teams, kickers etc because IMO the 3 above, especially the line play, is what usually dictates winners and losers in the NFL...again just my opinion.

If I had to put money one key factor that will determine the outcome of this game outside of the obvious TO battle it would be our O line v their D line...whoever wins that battle will win the game.
