What Are You Listening To?

Two of my favorite singers and songwriters out there today in music, Brandy Carlisle and Brandy Clark, coming together to create a beautiful song. This song appears to be on Brandy Clark's upcoming, self-titled album. Really looking forward to listening to Clark's new album too.

Going with my wife to see Pink this summer and my joke is she's going to see Pink and I'm going to see Brandi.

But Pink's alright and I'm sure the show will be phenominal but Brandi is my girlfriend even if I'm not her preference.

RIP Tina Turner

I read some articles about her last night.  I didn't realize it at the time because I was just a stupid kid, but her solo work was pretty iconic given her past and how she was sharing that during those times.  A lot of strength and power behind the sultry voice.

What else can I say about Jason Isbell that hasn't already been said. His songwriting is on another level from almost everyone else out there. He touches every feeling and emotion you have as a human being throughout an album. His songs always bring something out emotionally too when you listen to them. Each song is really a unique experience all by itself.

One of his latest, Cast Iron Skillet, is no exception to that. Even if you have never lived the experience of the song, Isbell pulls you in and makes you feel as if you have lived in. Terrific songwriting here as usual by Jason.

I put together an indie and alt-country musical start kit on Spotify. Sharing again for anyone that is interested in the country/alt country/indie country/americana/folk/bluegrass/folkgrass stuff like I am. If you are looking for new artists to get into that fit into these genres or just looking to get into something new in general maybe this will help you start your journey. I got started on my journey thanks to blogs and review sites like Country Universe, My Kind of Country, and Saving Country Music and want to share my love of this type of music with the world.

With the knowledge that Kiss deserves so much of the criticism that they get for being grown men in clown make up at an advanced age (amongst other things), they started out as a really good progressive-style rock band who used the makeup to garner attention. This shows that, in their young and hungry days, they could pound out a great rock tune. Posted to start at the song 100,000 Years.

Nope.

Pound - yes. Great tune - not so much.

I read Paul Stanley's auto biography recently. I gotta' say, I thought it was a pretty decent book.

I no longer listen to much KISS, but I am a sucker for a good rock biography.

We've got Ben Folds new album (its pretty mellow and he only swears twice on the whole album, no f-bombs at all) as Pick Of The Week on Under The Radar Radio.     We'll also have new music from Blur, Mike Doughty's Ghost Of Vroom, The Denver band Kiltro,  Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino, Tegan & Sara covering an Elvis Costello classic and Fontaines D.C. singer Grian Chatten.      7pm on www.annarbors107one.com  and thisisqmusic.com.   Come on down to Sonic Bliss......squash is on sale.

He’s giving in to guitars in his old age.

I am kind of wondering, with the content, if this is it.   Feels like a last album    Doesn't mean he won't tour and it doesn't mean that he wouldn't realease songs or eps or film music, but the album kind of plays out like a "it's been great, thanks, see you later".      He always wanted to feature more guitars in the mix. but thought being the anti-guitar band was the hook (and it kind of was the hook).       I had a conversation with him once and the subject of Prefab Sprout came up and it turns out he's as big a fan of the album "Two Wheels Good" as I am and he said that he played the track on the vinyl "Goodbye Lucille" so much that it turned white.   I asked him why he's never done a piano based cover - and he has actually worked on it but says the original is too good to touch it.    Maybe he'll do a covers album, but I doubt we get another original pop album for a very long time from Ben, if at all.   Ironically Paddy McAloon (Prefab Sprout) has been known to take over a decade between albums, and then only to honor a record contract and avoid getting sued.

I didn't realize that he was as old as 56-going-on-57, so he's rapidly approaching his Soaring Eagle Casino phase.

The First Lady of Bossa Nova has passed away at 83. Astrud Gilberto was never supposed to be a star. When her husband Joao & Stan Getz were recording their first (and only) studio album, they knew they had an international hit with The Girl From Ipanema, but had doubts that it would be played on American radio with Portuguese lyrics and Joao, who didn't speak much English, suggested that his wife, who'd never sung professionally, but sang around him all the time,  be the person to help translate and sing the English version. The version with her vocals launched a Bossa Nova craze in the U.S., the U.K. and other countries like Germany, France and Japan. It is THE standard for all Bossa Nova songs. After her divorce from Joao, she launched a solo career and sang songs in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Japanese.   I've grown to love this music over the years, it's completely soothing.  I love her voice.  It was perfectly unpolished and warm, but slightly detached.     An accidental Bossa Nova legend.   Descanse Em Paz, Astrud.

Fun fact: this is the song playing in the elevator when the Blues Brothers arrive downtown to pay the tax bill for the penguin.

This album is an acquired taste.  Its not the bubblegummy hippity hop of their other stuff.  These guys were artists with a real vision.

If I'm low or annoyed this is one of those anthemic pieces for my jangled GenX spirit.

This week's Under The Radar Radio will focus on the new album from Jenny Lewis "Joy'all"    We'll play 4 tracks from that album, along with new music from Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit,  Andy Frasco & The U.N.,  Son Volt, Geese (not Goose), Margaret Glaspy, and the new project from ex-Replacement Tommy Stinson.   Older faves from Jayhawks,  Plains, Kurt vile, Rhett Miller and the Lone Justice song that's been stuck in my head for 2 weeks.    Sunday - 7 on   annarbors107one.com and thisisqmusic.com

Goose is better.    Andy Frasco and Tommy Stinson get thumbs up.
